Notable contributing resources include the cutting shed (1927), the office building (1928), and a building originally used as a blacksmith shop. It is the world's largest open faced granite quarry. Granite from the quarry was used to build the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox, the Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kitty Hawk, and the Albert Einstein Memorial in Washington. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

U.S. Route 52 bypasses the city to the west and hosts much of the area's retail activity, including hotels, restaurants, and the Mayberry Mall. Interstate 74 passes through the southern side of Mount Airy Township, which is in the Winston-Salem/Greensboro Combined MSA.

Edgar Harvey Hennis House is a historic home located at Mount Airy, Surry County, North Carolina. It was built in 1909, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, three bay by eight bay, Late Victorian / Colonial Revival style brick veneer dwelling. It has a two-story rear ell with two-tier porch, a hipped roof with multiple projecting gables, four corbelled interior chimneys, and a wraparound porch.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
