Stinesville, Indiana

Stinesville Commercial Historic District is a national historic district located at Stinesville, Monroe County, Indiana. The district consists of five adjoining limestone commercial buildings in the central business district of Stinesville. The buildings were built between 1886 and 1894, and display elements of Renaissance Revival and Romanesque Revival style architecture. The main building is the two-story, Oolitic Lodge No. 682, I.O.O.F. built in 1894. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

The district encompasses five contributing buildings, one contributing site, six contributing structures, and two contributing objects associated with the Matthews Brothers Stone Company limestone business, now operated as Bybee Stone Company, Inc. The district developed between about 1862 and 1962, and include notable examples of Second Empire and Tudor Revival style architecture. The contributing resources include the Matthews Mansion (aka Graymont, 1880), Company Store Building (c. 1874), Primary Mill Building (1908), Drafting Building (1920), Administration Building (c. 1931), and two pump houses (c. 1935, c. 1955).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

It developed between about 1840 and 1953, and includes notable examples of Queen Anne, Early Commercial, Gothic Revival, and Bungalow/American Craftsman style architecture. Notable buildings include the Robert Stimson House (c. 1840), May Presley House (C. 1850), Bradford House (c. 1878), George W. Fletcher House (c. 1875), Wickens House (1909), Capt. Gilbert Perry House (c. 1890), I.O.O.F. Building (c. 1885), Town Hall (1927), Masonic Building (1895), Knights of Pythias Building (c. 1895), First United Methodist Church (1900), and First Baptist Church (1909).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

The Ennis Site is an important archaeological site in the countryside southwest of Indianapolis in the U.S. state of Indiana. Located near the town of Ellettsville in Monroe County, the site extends into a portion of Owen County, near the town of Spencer. As an important archaeological site, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in mid-1985; it was the first Monroe County archaeological site and the only Owen County archaeological site to receive this distinction.

The Stone Age Institute is an independent research center dedicated to the archaeological and paleontological study of human origins and technological development beginning with the earliest stone tools. The institute was founded by archaeologists Nicholas Toth and Kathy Schick to provide a focal point for research on human origins where affiliated scientists could collaborate on research and to provide science education outreach on human origins and evolution. The Stone Age Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The institute publishes scholarly books and articles and offers post-doctoral positions for prospective scientists. The institute is housed in a 11,400-square-foot (1,060 m2) facility located on a 30-acre (120,000 m2) rural site outside Bloomington, Indiana. The building was designed by Mary Krupinski and Dawn Gray of Kirkwood Design Studio in Bloomington, Indiana, and was completed in 2003.The Stone Age Institute is an autonomous research facility, but it has strong ties with Indiana University, especially CRAFT (the Center for Research into the Anthropological Foundations of Technology) and the Human Evolutionary Studies Program. Its co-founders, Toth and Schick, are faculty members at Indiana University.The facility includes a research library on early human prehistory and related science donated by the late J. Desmond Clark, professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley.
