On May 9, 2008, three Dutch firefighters lost their lives tackling a blaze at a large commercial building situated in a shipyard in the village of De Punt in the Dutch province of Drenthe. The firefighters, Anne Kregel, Raymond Soyer and Egbert Ubels entered the building not knowing that a layer of highly combustible smoke and gas had built up under the roof. This ignited, resulting in a sudden spread of the fire accompanied by a major explosion that resulted in their deaths.

The Drentsche Aa (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌdrɛntsə ˈʔaː]) is a river rising in the Dutch province of Drenthe, flowing through Drenthe and for the last part the province of Groningen. It ends in the Schipsloot near Haren, which flows into the Noord-Willemskanaal; however, originally it ended into the Selwerderdiep. The water finally ends in the Lauwersmeer and Waddenzee. In Groningen and the northernmost part of Drenthe the water is known as Drentsche Aa (sometimes Aa in Groningen), but in Drenthe it has a multitude of local names, such as Deurzerdiep, Looner Diep, Taarlosche Diep, Oudemolensche Diep, Schipborgsche Diep, and Westerdiep. A large part of the catchment of the Drentsche Aa is located in the Drentsche Aa National Landscape.

Oosterbroek is a mansion and a former hamlet in the Dutch province of Drenthe. The mansion is located about 2 km east of Eelde, in the municipality of Tynaarlo. The hamlet was located around the mansion. The mansion was a havezate which was a requirement to be admitted to the Knights of Drenthe. Around 1850, it had 3 houses and about 25 inhabitants. It was still considered to be a separate settlement in 1997, but the name no longer appears on the newest topographical maps. As of 2021, it is a statistical entity with Groningen Airport Eelde, however the postal authorities have put it under Eelde.

Glimmen is a village in the northeastern Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Groningen, about 10 kilometres from the city. It had a population of around 1,342 in 2021. The river Drentsche Aa flows past the village, nearby the Huis te Glimmen (House in Glimmen), a stately home on the site. The Appèlbergen is a forest to the east of the village. Through this wood leads an old Roman road, known as the Hereweg (from 'Heir-weg' or "army road").

De Punt is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Tynaarlo, and lies about 11 km south of Groningen. The village closely cooperates with Yde and they are often referred to as Yde-De Punt, however both are still separate villages.

On 23 May 1977, a train was hijacked near the village of De Punt, Netherlands. At around 09:00 that morning, nine armed Moluccan nationalists pulled the emergency brake and took over 50 people hostage. The hijacking lasted 20 days and ended with a raid by Dutch counter-terrorist special forces, during which two hostages and six hijackers were killed. The same day as the train hijacking, four other South Moluccans took over a hundred hostages at an elementary school in Bovensmilde, around 20 km (12 mi) away. The train hijacking was only the second such hijacking to take place in the Netherlands; the other, a 1975 train hijacking in Wijster, had also been perpetrated by Moluccans.

De Poll, formerly De Pol, is an estate at Pollselaan 5 south of Glimmen in the municipality of Groningen, Netherlands. The estate is located in the valley of the Drentsche Aa. The golf course of the Noord-Nederlandse Golf & Country Club has been located on the estate since 1953. The estate is covered by the Dutch 'Natural Beauty Act' (Natuurschoonwet) of 1928 that provides tax benefits to owners, usufructuaries and leaseholders of country estates.

The Noord-Nederlandse Golf & Country Club (abbreviated NNG&CC, Dutch for Golf & Country Club of the Northern Netherlands) is located on the historical De Poll estate in Groningen, Netherlands. The site is known for its beauty and is covered by the Dutch national 'Natural Beauty Act' (Natuurschoonwet).

Yde (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈidə]) is a village in the municipality of Tynaarlo in the province of Drenthe in the Netherlands. It lies about 11 km south of Groningen. Yde is twinned with De Punt as Yde-De Punt, however both remain separate villages.Yde is known as the location near to where the bog body of the Yde Girl was discovered in 1897 and whose long hair has remained. She was strangled, and is on display in the Drents Museum.The village was first mentioned 1206 as Ide. The etymology is unclear. Yde was home to 258 people in 1840. During World War II, there was a forced labour camp near Yde which mainly consisted of people arrest in neighbouring Friesland. The labourers had to build a defence line.

Haren (Dutch: [ˈɦaːrə(n)] (listen); Gronings: Hoaren) is a town and a former municipality in the northeastern Netherlands located in the direct urban area of the City of Groningen. Haren is a typical commuting municipality with many wealthy inhabitants. It lies on the northern part of a ridge of sand called the Hondsrug. It contains one of two dolmens in the province of Groningen (in the village of Noordlaren) and the largest botanical garden of the Netherlands called Hortus Haren. The municipality comprises a woodland area called Appèlbergen (east of the village of Glimmen) and a lake called Paterswoldsemeer. Haren was officially mentioned for the first time in 1249. On 21 September 2012, riots broke out with vandalism and looting in Haren. This was all because of an accidentally public distributed invitation to a birthday party on the social networking site Facebook. The events were called Project X Haren. More than 5000 people showed up and over 30 people were arrested. Damages amounted to more than a million euros.

Onnen is a village in the municipality of Groningen in the Netherlands. There are some picturesque farms and windmills in the village. Onnen is an esdorp. The Onner ash lies a considerable distance from the actual village (an ash generally lies flat outside a village). The Groningen – Assen railway lies near Onnen. NedTrain's classification yard is also situated close to Onnen.

Haren is a railway station located in Haren, Netherlands. The current station was opened on 29 September 1968 and is located on the Meppel–Groningen railway. Train services are operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen. A previous railway station serviced Haren between 1 May 1870, when the Meppel–Groningen railway line was opened, and 15 May 1936. The line was operated at the time by the Company for the Exploitation of the State Railways. The former station was closed because of its distance to the village. The new station, at a new location, was opened in 1968 after a new neighbourhood was built near the railway line.
