Granite City, Illinois

Granite City Township is located in Madison County, Illinois, in the United States. Granite City Township was founded in 1896, close to the Mississippi River. It quickly became an industrialized city due to its access to the Mississippi River and railroads. Granite City's population has long relied on its steel mill (Granite City Steel) as a source of income. As of the 2020 census, its population was 27,549.

Gateway Regional Medical Center is an American hospital in Granite City, Illinois. It contains 305 licensed beds, 100 of which are for treatment of acute mental illness in the behavioral health unit. The hospital and its predecessors have served the greater Madison County area for more than 100 years.

The Granite City YMCA is a historic YMCA building located at 2001 Edison Avenue in Granite City, Illinois. The building was built in 1924–26 for Granite City's branch of the YMCA, which was founded in 1916. St. Louis, Missouri-based architects Wedemeyer and Nelson designed the Late Gothic Revival style building; their design features a red brick and green tile exterior punctuated by vertical shafts and topped by a parapet. The building is the only institutional building in Granite City designed in the Gothic Revival style. The YMCA used the building for their activities, which included athletics, community education and citizenship classes, community gatherings, and charity work. The building closed in 2004 when the YMCA moved elsewhere.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 5, 2017.

Charles M. Price Support Center was a United States Army base located in Granite City, Illinois, across the Mississippi River directly to the east of St. Louis. Originally selected as a site for a U.S. Army supply depot during World War I, it was not established until World War II as the Granite City Engineer Depot. The installation employed up to 5,200 people and trained another 1,500 in maintenance and engineering supply at Camp Charles M. Price during the war. After the war, the depot was largely inactive until being designated the Granite City Army Depot in 1961 and transferred to the U.S. Army Materiel Command. The installation went through several changes of mission during the next thirty-five years. The actual supply depot closed in 1971, and the site became the Headquarters and Installation for Support Activity of the U.S. Army Aviation Systems Command. With a larger support emphasis, it became the U.S. Army St. Louis Area Support Center in 1975, with about 500 employees. In 1988, long-time Illinois Congressman Melvin Price was honored by having the center renamed the Charles Melvin Price Support Center, through which about 1,000 employees supplied logistical, administrative, and recreational support for 75 U.S. military and federal agencies in the St. Louis area. The center was designated for closure by the Army in 1995, and the functions were transferred to other sites over the following years, with employment dropping to around 300 by its closure. Simultaneous to the closing of the facility, redevelopment plans were being put into place. Now known as The Port, the former military facility has a YMCA, numerous recreational facilities, residential areas, several industrial sites, and a small U.S. Army Reserve Center.

The Emmert-Zippel House is a historic house located at 3279 Maryville Road in Granite City, Illinois. William Emmert built the house in 1837. He married the following year. Then, he and his family lived in the house. At the time, the house was located in a rural setting in Granite City, which was then known as Six Mile due to its distance from St. Louis. The house is a five-bay I-house, a housing style named for its popularity in Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. I-houses, including the Emmert-Zippel House, were two-story structures with two rooms on each floor connected by a central hall and staircase. Emmert lived in the house until 1881, and his family sold the house to August and Elizabeth Zippel in 1884. The Zippel family lived in the house until 1984, when the Old Six Mile Historical Society bought the house and made it a museum, known as the Old Six Mile Museum.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 2, 1996.

KXFN employs separate daytime and nighttime transmitter sites; the daytime transmitter is located on Chouteau Island near Granite City, Illinois, while the nighttime site is located further south near Dupo, Illinois.

Horseshoe Lake State Park is an Illinois state park in Madison County, Illinois, United States. It is approximately 2,960 acres (1,198 ha) and surrounds a large horseshoe-shaped lake called Horseshoe Lake. Horseshoe Lake is the second largest natural lake in Illinois taking up approximately 2,400 acres (971 ha) of the 2,960-acre (1,198 ha) park. The park has connections to Madison County Transit's Schoolhouse Trail, which connects to over 85 miles (137 km) of bike trail in Madison County, and even a trail which goes all of the way to downtown St. Louis after crossing the Mississippi River on the Chain of Rocks Bridge. The park is located in southeastern Granite City, Illinois, just a 10-mile (16 km) drive northeast of downtown St. Louis.

Horseshoe Lake, a National Natural Landmark, is located in the American Bottom of Illinois within the greater St. Louis metropolitan area, is 2,400 acres (10 km2) in size, and is the second-largest natural lake in Illinois after Lake Michigan. An oxbow lake which is a remnant of a Mississippi River meander, the lake's elevation is 403 feet (123 m) above sea level. The lake is the site of Horseshoe Lake State Park, which is 2,960 acres (12 km2) in size. The lake is bordered by the towns of Madison and Granite City. The lake is located within Nameoki Township, about four miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. The lake is very shallow, about three feet (1 m) deep throughout most of the lake, but there is one deep spot, about 54.5 feet (16 m) deep, due to dredging for sand in years past. The lake is annually drained in part to provide habitat for shorebirds. At least 287 bird species have been found at this lake, which includes most of the species found statewide. Canada geese winter here, as well as bald eagles. Other prominent birds include the mallard duck, snowy egret and little blue heron, and the Eurasian tree sparrow, limited to this region in North America. Fish species include bluegill, sunfish, shortnose gar, spotted gar, crappie, largemouth bass and channel catfish. The western part of the lake is industrialized, dominated by the Granite City Works facility of the United States Steel Corporation.

Venice is a city in Madison County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,498 at the 2020 census, down from 1,890 in 2010.
