Fox Lake, Illinois

Fox Lake is a station on Metra's Milwaukee District North Line in Fox Lake, Illinois. The station is located on Nippersink Boulevard at Grand Avenue (IL 132), is 49.4 miles (79.5 km) away from Union Station, the southern terminus of the line, and serves commuters from Fox Lake to Downtown Chicago. The station is the northern terminus of the Milwaukee District North Line. As of 2018, Fox Lake is the 141st busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 322 weekday boardings.As of 2022, Fox Lake is served by 14 trains in both directions on weekdays, by nine trains in both directions on Saturdays, and by all nine trains in both directions on Sundays. Until 1982 commuter trains continued to Walworth, Wisconsin and until the creation of Amtrak in 1971, inter-city trains like the Varsity and the Sioux, both operated by the Milwaukee Road, connected Fox Lake with Janesville, Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin, and Rapid City, South Dakota.

The Nippersink Creek, known locally as "The Nip", is a freshwater tributary that flows for 23 miles in the Illinois River / Fox River (Illinois River tributary) watershed, mostly in McHenry County, Illinois, within the Glacial Park Conservation Area, but also enters the Fox River / Chain O'Lakes area in Lake County, Illinois. The creek is managed by the McHenry County Conservation District with the exception of the sections that flow through private property. The creek has a mean annual water discharge of 159 cubic feet per second and closes when water levels reach 650 cubic feet (or over 6.5 feet) as this makes passing under the creek's two bridges potentially hazardous. The creek and its wetlands support a diversity of fish, frogs, snakes, turtles, and other aquatic animals as well as shorebirds and water fowl. The creek itself is a shallow, calm waterway with some riffles that is a popular with kayakers and canoers during the spring and summer months; with three distinct launch sites - Keystone Landing, Pioneer Landing, and the Nippersink Canoe Base.Shore fishing access exists at the various landings and within the Conservation area and common species calling the creek home include - channel catfish, bluegill, smallmouth bass, grass carp, green sunfish, walleye, and others.

On September 1, 2015, American police lieutenant Charles Joseph "Joe" Gliniewicz was found dead in a wooded area in Fox Lake, Illinois. The incident gained national coverage as it was initially believed that Gliniewicz was murdered by three unknown assailants. However, after two months of investigation, officials of the Lake County, Illinois Major Crimes Task Force concluded that Gliniewicz had actually committed a staged suicide after realizing that his many years of criminal activity would soon be exposed.

It consists primarily of an unincorporated area of McHenry County adjoining Pistakee Bay, within the McHenry post office, and is located just northeast of Johnsburg. Per the 2020 census, the population was 3,237.

The station is officially located on Washington Street and Rollins Road (Lake County Roads 31 and A20), however the actual location is off of Rollins Road itself. The station is 47.8 miles (76.9 km) away from Union Station, the southern terminus of the line, and serves commuters between Union Station and nearby Fox Lake, Illinois. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Ingleside is in zone J. As of 2018, Ingleside is the 205th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 63 weekday boardings. The station exists along a railroad line that originally served the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. As of 2022, Ingleside is served by 11 inbound trains and 13 outbound trains on weekdays, by nine trains in both directions on Saturdays, and by all nine trains in both directions on Sundays. All trains that stop at Ingleside treat it as a flag stop. Ingleside station is little more than an enclosed shelter. Parking is available along the north side of the tracks on the southeast corner of Jefferson Avenue and Rollins Road to a plot of land that is in line with Madison Avenue, a street that dead ends north of Rollins Road. Washington Street merely intersects with Rollins Road and the main parking lot entrance. The station is near locations such as Duck Lake and Fox Lake Veterans Memorial Park.

Encompassing more than 7,100 acres (29 km2) of water, 488 miles (785 km) of shoreline and 45 miles (72 km) of river, the Chain is the busiest inland recreational waterway per acre in the United States.Located in Lake County and McHenry County, and being a popular outdoor recreation area for the Chicago and Milwaukee metro areas, the lakes have drawn weekend crowds of 30,000 and holiday crowds of more than 100,000 people. Chain O'Lakes State Park borders three lakes at the northwest corner of the system. The Fox Waterway Agency, a special local governing body, is responsible for oversight of the Chain O'Lakes.
