17 King Street, Bristol

King Street is a 17th-century street in the historic city centre of Bristol, England. The street lies just south of the old town wall and was laid out in 1650 to develop the Town Marsh, the area then lying between the south or Marsh Wall and the Avon. The north side was developed first and the south side in 1663, when the street was named after Charles II. The section of the city wall is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Bristol Old Vic is a British theatre company based at the Theatre Royal, Bristol. The present company was established in 1946 as an offshoot of the Old Vic in London. It is associated with the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, which became a financially independent organisation in the 1990s. Bristol Old Vic runs a Young Company for those aged 7–25.The Theatre Royal, the oldest continually-operating theatre in the English-speaking world, was built between 1764 and 1766 on King Street in Bristol. The Coopers' Hall, built 1743–44, was incorporated as the theatre's foyer during 1970–72. Together, they are designated a Grade I listed building by Historic England. Daniel Day-Lewis called it "the most beautiful theatre in England."In 2012, the theatre complex completed the first phase of a £19 million refurbishment, increasing the seating capacity and providing up to ten flexible performance spaces. Besides the main Theatre Royal auditorium, the complex includes the Studio theatre and the Side Stage, Paint Shop and Basement performance areas. Whilst the theatre was closed, the company continued to present work in the Studio and Basement spaces, as well as at other sites around Bristol. The Theatre Royal re-opened in 2012 with Wild Oats.

St Nicholas' Almshouses (grid reference ST587727) is a historic building on King Street, Bristol, England. It was built in 1652 to 1656, extended in the 19th century and restored 1961 by Donald Insall. The foundations of a bastion of the City Wall were revealed during restoration. It has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II* listed building.The almshouse was one of the first buildings in King Street, a new development then outside the city wall and beside the "Back Street Gate".The building was damaged during the Bristol Blitz and now presents only a facade to the street. It no longer serves the homeless as it did in previous centuries. It is now student accommodation.

The Old Library (grid reference ST587727) is a historic building on the north side of King Street, Bristol, England. It was built in 1738–40 and has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II* listed building.Until 1906 it housed the main collections of Bristol's public library, which was one of the first in England when it was founded in 1613 on the same site. Users of the library included Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey and Humphry Davy. From 1779 the building also contained one of the country's first public displays of fossils.

During restoration in 1976 it was found that recycled ships timbers had been used for much of the oak studding and bracing in the buildings, and barrel staves had been used as laths. It is thought that the original roof had gables, similar to those seen on the neighbouring 7 and 8, which were cut back to form the hips seen today. It is a Grade I listed building.The statue of William III by John Michael Rysbrack, cast in 1733 and erected in 1736 to signify Bristol's Whig support of the Crown and Parliament Recognition Act 1689. The original plan was to have a statue of George II.During World War II the statue was moved to Badminton and subsequently restored and returned to the square in 1948.The bronze statue is on a Portland ashlar pedestal with a moulded plinth and cornice. It depicts the king in Roman dress.
