Rossville, Georgia

The John Ross House is a historic house at Lake Avenue and Spring Street in Rossville, Georgia. It was the home of the long-serving Cherokee Nation leader John Ross from 1830 to 1838, after his lands and fine home near the Coosa River had been taken by the state. Ross (1790-1866) led the Cherokee for many years, notably opposing the Cherokee Removal, which he was unable to stop. His house was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973.

US Post Office-Rossville Main, also known as Rossville Post Office, is a post office built in 1931 in Rossville, Georgia. It is a brick, two-story building with Georgian Revival style, with a tetrastyle pedimented portico. An eagle emblem is inset to the transom over the double front doors within the portico. It has tall 12 over 12 windows and a tile, mansard roof interrupted by dormer windows.The original post office in Rossville was in the John Ross House, preserved on the National Register and located just behind this post office. John Ross was a leader of the Cherokee Indians.

Missionary Ridge is a geographic feature in Chattanooga, Tennessee, site of the Battle of Missionary Ridge, a battle in the American Civil War, fought on November 25, 1863. Union forces under Maj. Gens. Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and George H. Thomas routed Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg and lifted the siege of the city. Missionary Ridge runs basically north–south for several miles and varies in width from a few feet to over 660 feet (200 m), with very steep, nearly vertical sides that rise over 330 feet (100 m) from the ground surrounding it. Missionary Ridge was so named for the early missionaries who made their way along paths climbing the ridge on their way to Brainerd Village to the settlement of the Cherokee. It was also referred to as "Mission Ridge" in the early years.The southernmost end of the ridge extends into Georgia. The ridge was slightly east of the city at the time of the battle but now, due to urban growth and annexation, it largely bisects the city. A 1⁄4-mile (0.40 km) section of the ridge was blasted away during construction of Interstate 24. This is known locally as the "Ridge Cut". The cut's sharp curves and steep grade are often a factor in accidents and congestion. The ridge today is an affluent residential area with many plaques and monuments to the battle, some of which are in the yards of residents, but most of the larger of which are surrounded by small reservations which are part of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, administered by the U.S. National Park Service. Crest Road follows the summit of the ridge for nearly its entire length. Like many areas in the South, Missionary Ridge is notorious for its kudzu infestation. The city of Chattanooga has undertaken a trial program using goats and llamas that graze on the plant. In 2007, the goats grazed along the Missionary Ridge area in the east of the city.

The St. Elmo Historic District, or St. Elmo for short, is a neighborhood in the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee. It is situated in the southernmost part of Hamilton County within the valley of Lookout Mountain below the part of the Tennessee River known as Moccasin Bend. St Elmo is at the crossroads of two ancient Indian trails, and was first occupied by Native American hunters and gatherers in the Woodland period, then agricultural Mississippians, including Euchee and Muscogee, and for a brief period between 1776 and 1786, the Cherokees in a community called Lookout Town. St. Elmo became part of the city of Chattanooga when it was annexed in September 1929. Hundreds of properties in the neighborhood were listed on the National Register in 1982, and in 1996 St. Elmo was designated a Local Historic District. Many of the buildings from the late 19th and early 20th century have been preserved. A St. Elmo resident is an 'Elmoian'.

Lake Winnepesaukah, commonly known as Lake Winnie, is an amusement park located in Rossville, Georgia, just south of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Carl and Minette Dixon opened the park to over 5,000 guests on June 1, 1925. They named it after the Native American word Winnepesaukah, meaning "bountiful waters" or "beautiful lake of the highlands". The park originally featured the largest swimming pool in the southeastern United States, which debuted in 1926 and was later removed. Its Boat Chute attraction, designed by Carl Dixon and opened in 1927, is the oldest mill chute water ride of its kind still in operation in the United States. In its early years, the park's primary focus was on its water attractions. Later, the park began expanding its dry amusement ride offerings with the introduction of its historic carousel and well-known Cannon Ball roller coaster in the late 1960s. Lake Winnie has grown to over 80 acres (32 ha), featuring 38 rides and a 5-acre (2.0 ha) water park with seven attractions.

The 6th Cavalry Museum is a military history museum located in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. The museum is dedicated to the 6th Cavalry Regiment, a regiment of the United States Army that began as a regiment of cavalry in the American Civil War, and is still active today. It is focused on those who served at the U.S. Army Post at Fort Oglethorpe from 1902 to 1946. The museum was established in 1981 by veterans who served in the cavalry.

Fort Oglethorpe was a United States Army post in the US state of Georgia. It was established in a 1902 regulation, and received its first contingent in 1904. It served largely as a cavalry post for the 6th Cavalry. During World War I, Fort Oglethorpe housed 4,000 German prisoners of war and civilian detainees. During World War I and World War II, it served as an induction and processing center. During World War II, it was a major training center for the Women's Army Corps. The post was declared surplus after World War II and sold. The majority of the old post formed the nucleus for the present community of Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. In the 1930s, soldiers played polo with Summerfield Johnston Sr. (Summerfield Johnston Jr.'s father), of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company, later known as Coca-Cola Enterprises, at Fort Oglethorpe and on the Johnston farm in McDonald, Tennessee.The American comic book artist and writer Marc Swayze was stationed at Fort Oglethorpe at the beginning of World War II.
