Cockle raking and shrimp fishing lasted into the 19th century. By 1872, the township and sub-district was made up of two chapelries (St Peter's and St Luke's), Birkdale township, the hamlets of Ainsdale and Raven-Meols and Altcar parish. Formby was built on the plain adjoining the Irish Sea coast a few miles north of the Crosby channel.A commuter town for Liverpool, Formby is also a tourist destination with day trippers attracted to its beaches, sand dunes and wildlife, particularly the endangered red squirrel and natterjack toad. The area is conserved by the National Trust, and designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

St Peter's Church is in Green Lane, Formby, Sefton, Merseyside, England, and is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool. It was built in 1746 to replace a chapel on another site that had been destroyed in a storm. The church built at this time is in Georgian style. It was extended at the east end in 1873, and this part of the church is in Gothic Revival style. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

The original chapel on the site was destroyed by a sandstorm in 1739. It was replaced by the present church in 1854, and this was extended in 1897. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

It was built during the early 1970s after a contracted period of delays and was necessary due to the increasing overcrowding at nearby Formby High School. The local primary schools St. Luke's and Woodlands act as feeder schools to Range High. The school is one of the few schools in the country to have received five consecutive 'outstanding' ratings from OFSTED. In 2016, the school was one of only three schools in the area to achieve a positive Progress 8 score on the new national school performance measures, while the 2019 was the highest of any 11-18 secondary school in Sefton. The school received a disappointing Ofsted judgement in 2018 having had five previous consecutive outstanding judgements.

Little Altcar is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton on Merseyside, within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire and on the West Lancashire Coastal Plain of England. The village forms part of the built-up area of Formby. It had a population of 892 in the 2001 Census, increasing to 910 at the 2011 Census.
