Makarewa River

Wallacetown is a small town in Southland, in the South Island of New Zealand. Wallacetown is to the west of Invercargill, on high ground between the Makarewa and Ōreti rivers, near the Ōreti's estuary. Both rivers are popular for trout and whitebait fishing. It is considered to be a satellite town of Invercargill. It is served by State Highway 99, which skirts the town's northern edge.

West Plains is a locality in the Southland Region of New Zealand, northwest of Invercargill and north of Otatara. Ōreti River and its tributary Makarewa River flow through the plains. It is part of the Southland Plains.

Invercargill Airport (IATA: IVC, ICAO: NZNV) is a fully secured controlled international designated airport located 1.6 km (one mile) west of the Central business district of Invercargill at the bottom of the South Island of New Zealand. It is the southernmost controlled airport in the Commonwealth. Formed on land reclaimed from the Waihopai/New River Estuary in 1938, the airport was prone to flooding, notably in 1984 when it was inoperable for two months. The Invercargill City Council considered moving the airport back to Dawson Farm, Myross Bush, the original site up to 1942. Instead, a large flood protection scheme was built, but during its construction heavy rain and an unusually high tidal surge flooded it again in 1987. There have been no problems since. The airport has a main secured terminal, a backup international secured terminal and 5 tarmac gates. Invercargill is the eleventh-busiest airport in New Zealand by passenger traffic.

The Invercargill Golf Club is a golf club in Southland, New Zealand, located on Dunns Road in Otatara, near Invercargill. In 1960 Invercargill Golf Club hosted the New Zealand Open which was won by Peter Thomson. It is also the permanent hosts of the SBS Invitational.

Otatara is an outer suburb of New Zealand's southernmost city, Invercargill. It is surrounded by the Ōreti River to the west and south, and its estuary and Invercargill Airport to the east, and West Plains to the north. Historically, it was in Southland County before it was abolished. The main thoroughfare in Otatara is Dunns Road, which continues westward across the Ōreti River bridge to road's end at Oreti Beach, towards Invercargill it becomes Stead Street at the old city/county boundary, passing between the estuary and the airport before crossing the Waihopai River bridge into the city proper. There are several local bush walks through tōtara forests, and numerous recreational facilities in the area including MTB tracks, rowing, speed boating, two golf courses and the nearby Oreti Beach. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "place of loosening" for Ōtātara.

Grasmere is a suburb in the New Zealand city of Invercargill. The area is low-lying and at risk from flooding and sea level rise.In 1984, Waihopai River burst its banks, causing flooding Grasmere and other suburbs. Homes and properties were damaged, and some people became homeless or lost their jobs. Flood banks were installed to prevent further floods.Between 2017 and 2018, Grasmere was the only suburb in Invercargill where the median house price declined.

Teretonga (means "Swift South" in Maori) is a 2.570 km (1.597 mi) motor racing circuit situated 8 km (5.0 mi) south-west of Invercargill, New Zealand. It is home of the Southland Sports Car Club. The circuit was established in 1957 and is the southernmost FIA-recognised race track in the world (the Autódromo Carlos Romero in Tolhuin, Tierra del Fuego (Argentina) is further south but is not FIA recognised). It is also the country's oldest purpose-built venue. Regular racing programme includes rounds of the local Clubmans Series; featuring rounds of South Island Racing Registers and a very large Classic Car meeting in February of each year. The circuit is also used for Sprints and Motorkhanas. Other clubs run Motor Cycle and Drag Races at Teretonga. Regarded by many drivers as the best and safest track in the country, it has been up-graded on a continual basis.

Prestonville is a suburb and industrial area in the New Zealand city of Invercargill. The area is low-lying and at risk from flooding and sea level rise.In 1984, Waihopai River burst its banks, inundating Prestonville "like a tidal wave". It caused major flooding in Prestonville and other suburbs, leading to property damage, homelessness and job losses. Flood banks were installed to prevent further floods.In the 1980s, a 24-hour aluminium processing plant was established in Prestonville to support the Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter. Locals successfully campaigned to limit the site's operating hours to 6am to 10pm due to the loud noise it created. The factory closed in 1994.In 2018, Fire and Emergency New Zealand investigated a series of suspicious fires in Prestonville and other parts of the city.

Waikiwi is a suburb of Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand. Invercargill is the southernmost city of New Zealand. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "kiwi waters" for Waikiwi.Waikiwi lies on the northern edge of Invercargill. It is bounded on the west by the Ohai Industrial Line and on the south by the Waihopai River. There is farmland to the north and east, although the suburb is expanding to the north. Prestonville, a commercial and industrial area, is located south-west of Waikiwi. Thomsons Bush, a reserve, is located south-east of the settlement. St John's Cemetery is located in Waikiwi. It is the resting place of many notable Invercargill residents.

Gladstone is a suburb of New Zealand's southernmost city, Invercargill. The area is low-lying and at risk from flooding and sea level rise.

Lorneville is a small settlement on the northern outskirts of Invercargill, in Southland, New Zealand. It is located on State Highway 6, at the junction with State Highways 98 and 99, and is thus also on the Southern Scenic Route. Originally called Wallacetown Junction after the small settlement of Wallacetown, which lies immediately to the west, the main industries in the area have a long association with livestock farming, and both Lorneville and nearby Makarewa are best known to most New Zealanders as the sites of freezing works owned by the Alliance Group.

Avenal is a suburb of New Zealand's southernmost city, Invercargill. The suburb includes Queens Park and Southland Museum and Art Gallery.
