Prestonville is a suburb and industrial area in the New Zealand city of Invercargill. The area is low-lying and at risk from flooding and sea level rise.In 1984, Waihopai River burst its banks, inundating Prestonville "like a tidal wave". It caused major flooding in Prestonville and other suburbs, leading to property damage, homelessness and job losses. Flood banks were installed to prevent further floods.In the 1980s, a 24-hour aluminium processing plant was established in Prestonville to support the Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter. Locals successfully campaigned to limit the site's operating hours to 6am to 10pm due to the loud noise it created. The factory closed in 1994.In 2018, Fire and Emergency New Zealand investigated a series of suspicious fires in Prestonville and other parts of the city.

Windsor North School is a primary school in Invercargill, New Zealand, previously known as Invercargill North School. The school's history dates to 1878, and the school moved to its current site in the suburb of Windsor the following year. The original school buildings were destroyed by fire in 1889. The only surviving remnant of the original school building is the school bell, which hangs in the foyer of the current administration block. In 1999 a time capsule was planted and is being unearthed in 2025. North School, as it was originally called, was for some time the largest primary school in Southland with a roll of over 700, but the opening of other schools in the district saw that roll drop to its current level.

Lorneville is a small settlement on the northern outskirts of Invercargill, in Southland, New Zealand. It is located on State Highway 6, at the junction with State Highways 98 and 99, and is thus also on the Southern Scenic Route. Originally called Wallacetown Junction after the small settlement of Wallacetown, which lies immediately to the west, the main industries in the area have a long association with livestock farming, and both Lorneville and nearby Makarewa are best known to most New Zealanders as the sites of freezing works owned by the Alliance Group.

Queens Park is a park in Invercargill, New Zealand, and was part of the original plan when Invercargill was founded in 1856. The park is 200 acres (0.81 km2) in extent. It is just north of the city centre, bounded by Queens Drive to the east, Kelvin Street to the west, Gala Street to the south and Herbert Street to the north. The Gala Street entrance features the Feldwick Gates, built in 1924 and named after John Feldwick, brother of MP Henry Feldwick.The park has an 18-hole golf course, a botanical garden, an aviary and sports grounds. It is also the home to the Southland Museum and Art Gallery and the Southland Astronomical Society Observatory. The cricket ground in the park is the home ground of the Southland cricket team, and is also regularly used by the Otago cricket team for first-class and one-day matches. However, in September 2021, the cricket ground was stripped of its first-class status due to drainage issues. The park also gives its name to one of Invercargill's association football clubs, Queens Park A.F.C. On the northern edge of the park are Waihopai School (formerly Waihopai Primary School) and Southland Boys' High School. Despite being within the bounded areas of the park, neither are considered a part of it.

The Southland Museum and Art Gallery Niho o te Taniwha is located in Gala Street, Invercargill, New Zealand. It is Southland's largest cultural and heritage institution, and contains a wide variety of the region's art, history and natural history collections. It is notable for its 1990 pyramid-shaped building, constructed over the original 1942 museum. In April 2018 the museum was closed indefinitely due to earthquake risks.
