East Cottingwith

Pocklington Beck is a watercourse that flows westwards from Pocklington in the East Riding of Yorkshire, and empties into the River Derwent at East Cottingwith. The beck is known for being culverted through the town of Pocklington, and for being susceptible to flooding. Historically the beck supported the villages along the route by providing water-power for several corn mills.

Thicket Priory is a religious house in the civil parish of Thorganby, North Yorkshire, England, located about 7 miles (11.3 km) south-east of York. It lies in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Middlesbrough.

It was historically part of the East Riding of Yorkshire until 1974, but from 1974 to 2023 was in the Selby District of the shire county of North Yorkshire. In 2023 the district was abolished and North Yorkshire became a unitary authority. It is situated 3 miles (4.8 km) from the village of Wheldrake. According to the 2011 census the village had 330 residents. Children in the village attend Wheldrake with Thorganby C of E (Aided) Primary School, located in Wheldrake.

Storwood is a hamlet and former civil parish, now in the parish of Cottingwith, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) south-west of Pocklington and lies to the south of the B1228 road on the south bank of the Pocklington Canal. In 1931 the civil parish had a population of 63. Storwood was formerly a township in the parish of Thornton, in 1866 Storwood became a civil parish, on 1 April 1935 the civil parish was merged with East Cottingwith to create Cottingwith.

Ellerton Priory was a Gilbertine priory that was historically in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The ruins stand in the village of Ellerton, on Spalding Moor in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The priory was founded no later than 1207, during the reign of King John, by Peter de Goodmanham.The priory was dissolved in December 1538.The site of the priory is now a scheduled monument.

It is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) north-west of the market town of Howden and 8 miles south-west of the market town of Pocklington. It lies west of the B1228 road and east of the River Derwent. According to the 2011 UK census, the parish had a population of 388, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 355. and covers an area of 1,824.551 hectares (4,508.56 acres).

St Helen's Church is the parish church of Thorganby, a village in the Selby district of North Yorkshire, in England. A church in Thorganby was first recorded in 1228, but by 1312 it was regarded as only a chapel in the parish of Aughton. It became a church with its own parish again after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The oldest part of the church may be the chancel arch, which has been tentatively dated to the mid-14th century. The tower, which is built of Magnesian Limestone, probably dates from the 15th century. The remainder of the church was rebuilt in brick: the nave and south porch in 1710, followed in 1719 by the chancel. All the windows have round arches, other than the east window, which is in the Perpendicular style. There is an early-19th-century vestry on the north side of the church. The church was restored in about 1955. In 1966, it was Grade I listed.Inside the church is a font, which is octagonal and probably dates from the late 17th century. There is a mediaeval stone slab memorial to Alice Saltmarsh, a Victorian coat of arms painted on wood, and a wooden plaque from 1821 which records the church's benefactors. There are three bells, one undated, and the other two dating from 1666 and 1738.

Aughton is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Ellerton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) north-west of the market town of Howden and 9 miles (14 km) south-west of the market town of Pocklington. In 1931 the parish had a population of 100. On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished to form Ellerton.It lies west of the B1228 road and east of the River Derwent.

Wheldrake is a village and civil parish located 7 miles (11 km) south-east of York in the unitary authority of the City of York, which is in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 1,909, increasing to 2,107 at the 2011 Census.The village was historically part of the East Riding of Yorkshire. Administratively it was a part of the Selby District in the shire county of North Yorkshire from 1974 until 1996. Since 1996 it has been part of the City of York unitary authority.The parish of Wheldrake covers an area of 4,300 acres (1,700 ha). It was established before 1066 and after being largely in the possession of Fountains Abbey in the Middle Ages, it became part of a landed estate until the mid 20th century. It has a significant conservation area and a nature reserve of international importance. This, named Wheldrake Ings, is a mile east of the village, and is where many wild flowers flourish and rare birds prosper. Most of the employed people who live in the village commute to work. There is a primary school, a church, a shop with post office and a public house which serve 761 households. There is a small industrial estate near the western approach to the village.

Derwent Ings is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) divided between North Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Derwent Ings is of international significance and has been designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention and as a Special Protection Area under the terms of the European Community Directive. Part of the site is owned by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and is managed in conjunction with English Nature. It lies adjacent to the River Derwent between Sutton upon Derwent and Menthorpe. The site, which was designated a SSSI in 1975, consists of a series of neutral alluvial flood meadows, fen and swamp communities and freshwater habitats. It is one of the most important examples of agriculturally unimproved species-rich alluvial flood meadow habitat remaining in the UK. In winter the Ings support internationally important concentrations of waterfowl, in excess of 20,000 individuals, together with nationally important numbers of Bewick's swan, teal, wigeon, mallard, pochard, golden plover and ruff.

St Helen's Church is the parish church in Wheldrake, a village in the rural south-eastern part of the City of York, in England. The oldest part of the church is the tower, which dates from the 14th century, but was rebuilt in the 15th century, with larger stones. It is built of limestone, in two stages, and has small diagonal buttresses. The door and windows have pointed arches, and there is a vestry on the north side. By the late-18th century, the church was ruinous, and the nave was demolished and rebuilt in brick in 1779. It has round arched windows, and an apse, and is described by Nikolaus Pevsner as "handsome, rectangular [and] well-lit".The church's font dates from the 13th century, while most of the other fittings date from an 1874 refurbishment, which gave the interior a Gothic appearance. The pulpit and altar furnishings were carved in 1910 by Robert Thompson. In the 1970s, Victorian stained glass windows were replaced with clear glass.

Cottingwith railway station served the village of East Cottingwith, East Riding of Yorkshire, England from 1913 to 1964 on the Derwent Valley Light Railway.
