The 2021 Georgia poultry plant accident was an industrial disaster that occurred on January 28, 2021, in Gainesville, Georgia, United States. Six people were killed by asphyxiation and at least ten were injured when a liquid nitrogen leak occurred inside a poultry processing plant owned by Foundation Food Group.

Gainesville State College was a state college of the University System of Georgia serving northeast Georgia. The Gainesville State College Gainesville Campus, located 45 miles (72 km) northeast of Atlanta and six miles (9.7 km) southwest of downtown Gainesville in Oakwood, was on Georgia State Route 53 less than a mile from I-985 exit 16. The Gainesville State College Oconee Campus was located on Bishop Farms Parkway in Watkinsville, Georgia. Students were drawn primarily from the increasingly diverse northeast Georgia area. On January 10, 2012, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved the merger of the school with North Georgia College and State University, which took effect in January 2013. The new combined school is called the University of North Georgia.

Chicopee is a former mill village located approximately four miles south of downtown Gainesville, and is in Hall County, Georgia, United States.Chicopee was designed in 1925 by Earle Sumner Draper for the Chicopee Manufacturing Corporation, a subsidiary of The Johnson and Johnson Company. It was his last mill town project and his most successful. It was the personal project of Robert Wood Johnson II. Construction started in 1927 and the village consisted of 217 homes, a company store, medical office, and the mill across the street. The mill is the earliest example of a large single story textile plant built in the South. The village is unincorporated and has a population of approximately 350. Originally the property was laid out for roughly 500 homes but only 217 homes were built in the first phase and the full plan was never completed. Chicopee GA as a whole is now a historic district. The Mill buildings are within the City of Gainesville while the Village is within unincorporated Hall County. Chicopee is registered on the National Register of Historic Places.

On the morning of April 6, 1936, a devastating tornado hit the Cooper Pants Factory, located in Gainesville, Georgia. The tornado, which received a rating of F4 on the Fujita scale, initiated a partial collapse of the factory, which sparked a fire that trapped up to 125 workers inside, killing over seventy of those who were trapped in the rubble. The collapse resulted in several work-related hearings, many of which ended with monetary compensation to victims. The collapse and resulting fire is the highest death toll in a single building ever hit by a tornado.
