Corzoneso

Acquarossa is the capital of the district of Blenio in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. The municipality was created on 4 April 2004 by a merger of Castro, Corzoneso, Dongio, Largario, Leontica, Lottigna, Ponto Valentino and Prugiasco. The village Acquarossa was located in Lottigna. The name of the new community was selected from the one located at its centre: Acquarossa, a tourist resort.

Leontica is a village and former municipality in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. It was first recorded in year 1204 as Levontega. The municipality also contained the village Comprovasco. It had 315 inhabitants in 1602, which increased to 441 in 1808 and 473 in 1850. It then declined a bit, to 295 in 1900 and 408 in 1950. In 2000 the population had dropped to 267. In 2004 the municipality was merged with the other, neighboring municipalities Castro, Corzoneso, Dongio, Largario, Lottigna, Marolta, Ponto Valentino and Prugiasco to form a new and larger municipality Acquarossa. In winter Leontica includes 30 km of ski pistes up to the Bassa di Nara pass (2,123 m).

Dongio is a village and former municipality in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. It was first recorded in year 1188 as Deuci. The municipality also contained the villages Marogno and Motto. It had 532 inhabitants in 1682, which decreased to 391 in 1808. It was then stable for the next two centuries, reaching 488 in 1900 and 423 in 2000. In 2004 the municipality was merged with the other, neighboring municipalities Castro, Corzoneso, Largario, Leontica, Lottigna, Marolta, Ponto Valentino and Prugiasco to form a new and larger municipality Acquarossa.

It had 105 inhabitants in 1682, and from 1850 to 1950 the population count remained stable around 130. It then dropped to 79 in both 1970 and 2000. In 2004 the municipality was merged with the other, neighboring municipalities Castro, Corzoneso, Dongio, Largario, Leontica, Marolta, Ponto Valentino and Prugiasco to form a new and larger municipality Acquarossa, the name taken from the old village in Lottigna.

It had 178 inhabitants in 1808, but this decreased to 136 in 1850, 86 in 1900, 75 in 1950 and 43 in 2000. In 2004 the municipality was merged with the other, neighboring municipalities Castro, Corzoneso, Dongio, Largario, Leontica, Lottigna, Ponto Valentino and Prugiasco to form a new and larger municipality Acquarossa, the name taken from the old village in Lottigna.

Castro is a village and former municipality in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. It was first recorded in year 1200 as Castri. It had 68 inhabitants in 1567, which increased to 114 in 1808 and 129 in 1850. It then decreased to 97 in 1900, 81 in 1950 and 62 in 1970. In 2000 the population count was back on 81. In 2004 the municipality was merged with the other, neighboring municipalities Corzoneso, Dongio, Largario, Leontica, Lottigna, Marolta, Ponto Valentino and Prugiasco to form a new and larger municipality Acquarossa.

The Matro (2,171 m) is a mountain of the Swiss Lepontine Alps, overlooking Giornico in the canton of Ticino. It lies at the southern end of the chain separating the main Leventina valley from the Blenio valley. An antenna is located on the summit.

Torre was a municipality in the district of Blenio in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. On 25 January 2005, the cantonal authorities announced that Torre would merge with Aquila, Campo Blenio, Ghirone and Olivone to form a new municipality to be called Blenio. This union was carried through on 22 October 2006.
