Naval Air Station Ellyson Field was a former U.S. Navy training base, established in Escambia County, Florida in 1940 at the outset of World War II as an auxiliary facility to Chevalier Field at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. It had three red brick hangars common to the various Navy airfields in the Pensacola area, and eight paved runways, the longest of which was 3,550 ft in length.The short length of the air station's runways became increasingly incompatible with the introduction of higher performance piston aircraft followed by first generation jet aircraft in the post-World War II era. Fixed-wing operations were subsequently by exception until approximately late 1970 and limited to only a few certain models of propeller-driven training aircraft (e.g., T-34, T-28, etc.). However, rotary-wing operations at the air station continued to flourish as helicopters saw ever-increasing use in the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Coast Guard in the 1950s and 1960s, with NAS Ellyson Field becoming the sole intermediate and advanced training site for rotary-wing Naval Aviators in each of those services. NAS Ellyson Field last served the Navy as a helicopter training facility through December 1973, by which time conflicts with air traffic patterns for general aviation and commercial passenger jet traffic at Pensacola Regional Airport / Hagler Field, now known as Pensacola International Airport, located just south of the station, coupled with the reorganization of Naval Air Training Command, led to a decision to close the airfield but retain the installation for non-flying operations. Helicopter training was moved to NAS Whiting Field, Florida, and flight operations were discontinued on 28 December 1973. The base was taken over by the Naval Education and Training Program Development Center (NETPDC), which renamed the installation as NETPDC Ellyson Field. Following NETPDC's move to the former NAS Saufley Field, Florida, in 1979, Ellyson Field was closed. Conveyed to the City of Pensacola, the former NAS Ellyson Field is now the Ellyson Industrial Park with only a few of the former Navy buildings still standing. These include the base operations building (minus its control tower cab), the three hangars, the academic training building, the dispensary and the Bachelor Officers Quarters (BOQ) that served the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and NATO/Allied officer flight student personnel assigned to NAS Ellyson Field for rotary-wing training. Portions of the ramp areas also still exist but the runway grid has been completely redeveloped.

University Town Plaza is an outdoor shopping mall in Pensacola, Florida, United States. It is being developed on the site of the former University Mall, which operated from 1974 to 2013. The mall's original anchor stores were J. C. Penney, Sears, and McRae's. In 2013, the mall was torn down except for its anchor stores and rebuilt as an outdoor complex. Anchor stores of the outdoor complex are J. C. Penney, Burlington, BJ's Wholesale Club, and Academy Sports + Outdoors, with one vacancy previously occupied by Toys "R" Us. The mall is owned and managed by Washington Prime.

Booker T. Washington High School is a secondary school currently located at 6000 College Parkway in Pensacola, Florida, and is part of the Escambia County School District. It was named after the African-American education pioneer Booker T. Washington. The previous location for the school is now in use as the J.E. Hall Center. Booker T. Washington is also the primary location for disabled students in the county.

Jim Spooner Field is a stadium in Pensacola, Florida, United States, that is primarily used for baseball, is the home field for the University of West Florida baseball team and was home to the Pensacola Pelicans. It opened in 1981 with a seating capacity of about 1,000 people. Over the years, that capacity has more than tripled.In May 2003, the stadium underwent a massive renovation. The president of the Pelicans, Rishy Studer, and her husband, Quint, contributed $500,000 to improve the stadium to meet minor league standards. The renovations included adding a lawn seating area that could accommodate up to 500 people, a series of premium seating sections, a public address system, a new backstop, and accommodations for the disabled. On August 22, 2008, the Pelicans organization named it after Jim Spooner, a longtime UWF coach. The first game at Jim Spooner Field at Pelican Park was played that night.

Pensacola State College (PSC), formerly Pensacola Junior College, is a public college in Pensacola, Florida. It is part of the Florida College System. The main campus, located in Pensacola, was opened in 1948 and was the first institute of higher learning in Pensacola. Pensacola State quickly expanded to include a downtown campus in 1957, a Milton campus in 1971, and a Warrington campus in 1977, with centers on the Fairpoint Peninsula area of Santa Rosa County, as well as one in Century. A mini-campus opened on Naval Air Station Pensacola in 1981 but was destroyed during hurricane Ivan in 2004. In July 2010, the college changed its name to Pensacola State College in order to reflect its transition into offering four-year degrees. The current president is C. Edward Meadows. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

American Family Planning, formerly known as The Ladies Center and as Community Healthcare Center, was a clinic in Pensacola, Florida, providing abortions and other women's healthcare services. It is notable as the site of a number of acts of anti-abortion violence. Perhaps best-known was the 1994 murder of Dr. John Britton. Britton was a physician working at the clinic; he and his escort James Barrett were shot to death as they arrived on July 29 by anti-abortion protester Paul Jennings Hill. Barrett's wife June was also wounded. Previously, the clinic had been bombed twice in 1984; a pipe bomb destroyed the building on June 25 of that year, and four youths—Matt Goldsby, Jimmy Simmons, Kathy Simmons, and Kaye Wiggins—bombed it on Christmas Day, calling the crime "a gift to Jesus on his birthday." These bombers stated that they were also behind the June bombing.On January 1, 2012, Bobby Joe Rogers firebombed the clinic with a Molotov cocktail; the fire gutted the building. Rogers told investigators that he was motivated to commit the crime by his opposition to abortion, and that what more directly prompted the act was seeing a patient enter the clinic during one of the frequent anti-abortion protests there.It was shuttered by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration in 2022 after multiple clients had parts of their internal organs removed and had to be hospitalized.

Delta Air Lines Flight 1288 was a regularly scheduled flight from Pensacola, Florida to Atlanta, Georgia. On July 6, 1996, the aircraft serving the flight, a McDonnell Douglas MD-88, was on takeoff roll from Runway 17 at Pensacola when it experienced an uncontained, catastrophic turbine engine failure that caused debris from the front compressor hub of the left engine to penetrate the left aft fuselage. The cause of the engine failure was found to have been a fault in the manufacture of the fan. The failure of the airline to spot the resulting crack in the blade was a contributing factor. The impact killed a female passenger and her son, and seven other passengers were injured. The pilot aborted takeoff and the airplane stopped on the runway. Three other passengers sustained minor injuries during the emergency evacuation. Most of the passengers were traveling on vacation.

Cordova Mall, located in Pensacola, Florida, is the largest shopping center on the northwest Gulf Coast of Florida. Opened in 1971 and renovated twice, in 1987 and 2008/2009, Cordova Mall comprises 929,685 square feet (86,370.6 m2) of commercial property, with two major and six junior anchor stores. Five are situated in the mall (Dillard's, Belk, Dick's Sporting Goods, Old Navy, and Ross Dress for Less), and two are located in an open-air atmosphere (Best Buy and World Market). Until 2012, Dillard's operated two stores in the mall, which had been tenanted by D. H. Holmes and Gayfers. Montgomery Ward used to be located where World Market and Best Buy opened in 2001. According to the Simon Property Group website, Cordova Mall is the third-most popular tourist destination in the Florida Panhandle, and serves eight million shoppers a year. [1] Office Depot opened next to the mall in 1992 during Labor Day weekend.The mall was damaged in a tornado on October 18, 2007, although no injuries were reported.In 2012, Dillard's closed its store in the former D. H. Holmes, consolidating all operations into the former Gayfers building. As a result, Belk moved from its existing location (which was previously the first Parisian store outside of Alabama until 2007) to the former D.H. Holmes/Dillard's, and Dick's Sporting Goods taking over most of the store that had been Parisian and Belk. This also resulted in the closure of another Belk store at nearby University Mall (now University Town Plaza).

The University of West Florida (West Florida or UWF) is a public university in Pensacola, Florida, United States. Established in 1963 as a member institution of the State University System of Florida, the University of West Florida is a comprehensive research university without faculties of law or medicine, a designated space-grant institution, and sits on the third largest campus in the State University System, at 1,600 acres (650 ha). The university's mascot is Argie the Argonaut and its logo is the chambered nautilus.

The University of West Florida College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the liberal arts college at the University of West Florida. It is the largest of UWF's three colleges.

The John C. Pace Library is the academic library of the University of West Florida and is the largest library in Northwest Florida. In addition to the main library on the main campus north of Pensacola, Florida, there is a branch library in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. It has 752,000 printed volumes, 1.2 million microfilms and microfiches, 5,100 serial subscriptions and nearly 2,000 online journal subscriptions.Subject areas best covered by the library include history, geography, genealogy, environmental studies, art and architecture, health and medicine, biography, technology, legal history, archaeology, and other subjects pertinent to West Florida, its people, organizations, and institutions In addition, it is a regional depository for publications of the United States government and the state of Florida, and has a well-known Special Collections department that houses over one million items, including 920 individual manuscripts and archival collections, 80,000 photographs, 2,000 maps, and 10,000 items relating to the history of West Florida. The Pace Library holds the archives of the British Indian-trading firm Panton, Leslie & Company, headquarter in Pensacola, and of the firm's attorney, John Innerarity.

Pensacola International Airport (IATA: PNS, ICAO: KPNS, FAA LID: PNS), formerly Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport and Pensacola Regional Airport (Hagler Field), is a public use airport three nautical miles (6 km; 3 mi) northeast of the central business district of Pensacola, in Escambia County, Florida, United States. It is owned by the City of Pensacola. Despite its name, the airport does not offer scheduled international flights, though chartered international flights are not uncommon. This airport is one of the five major airports in North Florida, and among these is the second largest by passenger count, only behind Jacksonville. The other airports in the North Florida region are: Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport, Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, Tallahassee International Airport, and Jacksonville International Airport. It is included in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2021–2025, in which it is categorized as a small-hub primary commercial service facility. As per Federal Aviation Administration records, the airport had 771,917 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2008, 694,786 enplanements in 2009, and 729,748 in 2010. In 2018, the airport served 1.9 million passengers.
