On January 18, 1993, Maritza Martin Munoz, a 33-year-old Cuban-American woman, was shot to death by her 34-year-old ex-husband, Emilio Nuñez, at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Cemetery in North Lauderdale, Florida, United States. Nuñez had been interviewed by Ocurrió Así television reporter Ingrid Cruz, who accompanied him when he visited his daughter's grave. While the crew was filming Nuñez at the cemetery, Martin arrived for her visit, and Cruz confronted Martin, who was sitting silently in her vehicle, insisting that Martin answer her questions. Martin and Nuñez's 15-year-old daughter, Yoandra, had committed suicide in November 1992 following their discovery of her being 13 weeks pregnant, and Nuñez had blamed the incident on Martin. Nuñez believed that their daughter had been abused by her stepfather and murdered or driven to suicide by her mother. Investigators rejected both theories. Martin had raised Yoandra; Nuñez was prevented from having contact with her. As Cruz continued banging on Martin's car window, trying to get her to answer questions, Nuñez left the grave site and returned to his vehicle. Martin then left her car, noted Nuñez's license plate number, and turned towards the grave, while ignoring Cruz's questions. As Martin started silently walking towards the grave with Cruz still asking questions, Nuñez suddenly returned with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, shot Martin in the back of the head, then shot her several more times after she fell to the ground. The cameraman filmed the shots while Cruz started screaming and ran towards the station vehicle. The footage was used in the 1993 shockumentary film Traces of Death. It was also shown in the 2002 documentary film Bowling for Columbine. Martin left behind an eighteen-month-old son. She was buried next to her daughter. In 2000, Nuñez was found guilty by a Fort Lauderdale, Florida jury. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after serving 25 years.

The stadium was demolished in June 2019 as part of the construction of Inter Miami CF Stadium for Inter Miami CF.The New York Yankees announced in March 1961 that they would move spring training from St. Petersburg, Florida to Fort Lauderdale where a new stadium would be build for the team at an estimated cost of $500,000 with 4,000 covered seats and 4,000 bleacher seats.The Yankees trained at the stadium between 1962 and 1995. The Fort Lauderdale Yankees of the minor league Florida State League played home games in the stadium from 1962 through 1992. The Fort Lauderdale Red Sox played home games there in 1993, after an unsuccessful attempt to move from Winter Haven to Fort Myers (they ended up the following year in Sarasota). The Baltimore Orioles held spring training at the stadium from 1996 to 2009.Fort Lauderdale Stadium was last leased to Traffic Sports USA (owners of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers) in June 2011.

DRV PNK Stadium (pronounced as Drive Pink Stadium, formerly Inter Miami CF Stadium) is a soccer-specific stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Built on the site of the former Lockhart Stadium, the 18,000-seat stadium is the home pitch of Inter Miami CF of Major League Soccer and its MLS Next Pro reserve side Inter Miami CF II. DRV PNK Stadium opened in 2020 as an interim venue for Inter Miami CF until the completion of the proposed Freedom Park stadium. The stadium is the primary headquarters for the team and its youth academy, in addition to further training grounds.

Lockhart Stadium was a stadium used mostly for soccer in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States. It was used in a variety of sports, particularly soccer and American football. Originally designed in 1959 for high school sports, the stadium's long-standing soccer connection began in 1977 when it became the home venue for the original Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the original North American Soccer League (NASL). In 1998, it was refitted for soccer to house the Miami Fusion in Major League Soccer, but the team folded in 2002. It was also the home stadium of the Florida Atlantic Owls football team from 2002 to 2010. Later it was the home of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the second iteration of NASL from 2011 to 2016. The stadium site was redeveloped in 2019 and 2020 with the construction of DRV PNK Stadium for Major League Soccer club Inter Miami CF.

On July 21, 2023, two professional soccer clubs, Cruz Azul and Inter Miami CF, played against each other in the 2023 Leagues Cup group stage at DRV PNK Stadium, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States. This game garnered significant global media attention due to the official debut of Argentinian player Lionel Messi for Inter Miami CF, alongside his former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets. The game ended with a 2–1 won for Inter Miami, thanks to Messi's spectacular free-kick in the fourth minute of stoppage time (90+4'). After the game, Inter Miami CF went on to win against Atlanta United FC, securing the top spot in South 3 group with a perfect 6 points, ahead of Cruz Azul with 2 points, and advancing to the knockout stage. Inter Miami CF then successively defeated Orlando City SC in round of 32, FC Dallas in round of 16, Charlotte FC in quarter-finals, and Philadelphia Union in Semi-finals before winning against Nashville SC on penalties in the final to claim the championship. Cruz Azul was eliminated in the Round of 32, losing to Charlotte FC in a 0–0 draw but lost 3–4 on penalties. This victory marked the beginning of a series of subsequent successes for Inter Miami CF since Lionel Messi signed in 2023, including their first MLS Cup title in 2025. Thanks to Messi's influence, viewers in the United States began paying more attention to soccer, a sport that wasn't previously the most popular in the country.
