Noank, Connecticut

The Noank Historic District is a historic district encompassing the historic main part of the village of Noank in the town of Groton, Connecticut. The district contains a distinctive assortment of mid-to-late 19th-century residential architecture that is notable for its often picturesque woodwork. At the time of their construction, the village was primarily a worker village for nearby shipyards. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The Edward Yeomans House is a historic house on the waterfront of Palmer Cove on Brook Street in the Noank section of Groton, Connecticut. With its construction dating to 1713, it is believed to be Noank's oldest surviving structure, built by one of its early settlers. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 22, 1978.

Ram Island is a small 20-acre (81,000 m2) island off the coast of Mystic, Connecticut. It is located in the Town of Stonington, approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) offshore, between Mystic and Fishers Island. Once called Mystic Island, it was formerly the site of an exclusive Victorian era hotel resort at which steamships from Boston and New York City stopped twice a day. At the height of its popularity, the hotel played host to a world lightweight bare-knuckle boxing championship. By the 1920s, the hotel had fallen into disrepair and was destroyed in the New England Hurricane of 1938. A motel was later built that catered to transient boaters. The island has served as a seasonal private residence and farm since 1978. However, fires in February 2013 and March 2014 destroyed the barn and home.

Haley Farm State Park is a public recreation area that preserves Colonial-era farmland as open space in the town of Groton, Connecticut. The site of the state park once formed part of the lands granted to Governor John Winthrop and later became a dairy farm. The park's 267 acres (108 ha) are connected to the adjacent Bluff Point State Park by way of a pedestrian bridge over railroad tracks. Park activities are restricted to bicycling and walking. The park is managed by Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Groton Long Point (GLP) is located within the town of Groton, on Fishers Island Sound, in New London County, Connecticut, United States. The year-round population was 518 at the 2010 census. The area is administered by the Groton Long Point Association (GLPA), a private association that was established by Special Act of the Connecticut Legislature in 1921. The act is the charter of the GLPA and enables the Association to tax and issue bonds to provide services independent of the town of Groton; typically, such municipal corporations provided services that the larger township could not or would not provide. Pursuant to the act, the GLPA has the same governmental powers as a borough. Today, such a special taxing district can be formed by Connecticut residents on their own without special acts of the Legislature. The area is treated by the U.S. Census Bureau as a borough, although it is not formally incorporated as such.

Mumford Cove is a private association in Southeastern Connecticut located adjacent to Groton Long Point, bordered by Noank Connecticut Haley's Farm nature preserve, Palmer's Cove, and Fisher's Island Sound. It is a part of the town of Groton, Connecticut. The neighborhood was first developed in the late 1960s, and former Connecticut Governor John Dempsey briefly lived there. Mumford Cove experienced ecological crises in the 1970s, when raw sewage was routinely pumped into the waters of the cove and salt marshes of the area. Since this practice was halted, the EPA has studied and assessed the health and safety of the waters off of Mumford Cove, which have now nearly returned to their natural levels.

Groton Long Point Yacht Club (GLPYC) was charted in 1934 in the beach community of Groton Long Point, Connecticut and remains active today. Functioning during the summer as something akin to a summer camp, the Yacht Club currently runs classes in sailing (420's, Optis, and Seashells), swimming, tennis, and sports.

Mason's Island (Algonquin: Chippachaug - meaning: a separated place) is an inhabited island at the mouth of the Mystic River, in Stonington, Connecticut. The island was named after Major John Mason who was granted the island in recognition for his military services in the 1637 Pequot War in nearby Mystic. This island remained in the Mason family for over 250 years, from 1651 to 1913. Since then the Allyn family have been stewards of it, and most of the island is owned by the Mason's Island Company and regulated by property deeds under the Mason's Island Property Owners Association (MIPOA). The Mason's Island Marina and the Mystic River Marina are located on the north end of the island. Mason's Island is connected to the mainland by a causeway.

Robert E. Fitch High School is a public high school located in Groton, Connecticut.

Ella T. Grasso Southeastern Technical High School, or Grasso Tech, is a technical high school located in Groton, Connecticut. It is in the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System. It receives students from many nearby towns.The school is named after Ella T. Grasso, the first woman elected governor of Connecticut.

The Mystic River Railroad Bridge is a railroad bridge carrying Amtrak's Northeast Corridor over the Mystic River in Mystic, Connecticut, between the towns of Groton and Stonington. There have been three bridges at this location. The first bridge was a single-tracked, wooden drawbridge in 1819, which was replaced with a steel swing bridge in 1875.The current bridge was built in 1984, and is a truss-style swing bridge, providing 13 feet (4.0 m) of vertical clearance when closed.The two tracks running over the bridge are owned by Amtrak, are part of its Northeast Corridor route, and are used to operate its Northeast Regional and Acela Express services. There is a proposal, however, to extend Shore Line East Commuter Rail Service from its current terminus in New London to Mystic, which would require crossing this bridge. The bridge is the easternmost drawbridge on the Amtrak-owned Northeast Corridor in Connecticut.

The Mystic River is a 3.4-mile-long (5.5 km) estuary in the southeast corner of the U.S. state of Connecticut. Its main tributary is Whitford Brook. It empties into Fishers Island Sound, dividing the village of Mystic, Connecticut between the towns of Groton and Stonington. Much of the river is tidal. The Mystic River was the location of three large shipbuilding firms during the 19th-century, and it is now the home of the Mystic Seaport maritime museum. The name Mystic is derived from the Pequot term "missi-tuk", describing a large river whose waters are driven into waves by tides or wind, according to the Mystic River Historical Society.
