Newton High School (Georgia)

The Porterdale Historic District in Porterdale, Georgia is a 525 acres (212 ha) historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Its area is roughly the city limits of Porterdale north of Elm St., and it includes Colonial Revival, Late Gothic Revival, and other architecture. In 2001 it included 496 contributing buildings and eight contributing structures. It also included 37 non-contributing buildings and a non-contributing object.It includes three mill complexes and mill worker housing.It includes: Porterdale Mill (1899), built on the north bank of the Yellow River (Yellow River (Georgia)?), a three-story brick building stretching about 800 feet (240 m) along the river, with a four-story tower (see photos #3-#8 accompanying the NRHP nomination document) Welaunee Mill (c.1920), on south bank of the Yellow River, a two-story brick mill with a three-story tower (see photo #1). Osprey Mill (1916), the largest of the three mills, covering two square blocks in the center of town (see photos 35, 36, 37, 41)Other properties in the district include: Porter Memorial Gymnasium, 2201 Main St, Porterdale, Georgia (1938), designed by architect Ellamae Ellis League. Damaged by fire in October 2005, it was converted in an adaptive reuse to become an outdoor event center, winning a Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation award. Newton County Courthouse is a historic county courthouse in Courthouse Square in Covington, Georgia, the county seat of Newton County, Georgia. The courthouse was designed by Bruce & Morgan in a Second Empire architecture style and built in 1884. It was constructed on the same site as a previouse county courthouse building that burned down on December 31, 1883. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1980. The courthouse features in two postcards from around 1907.

Oxford College of Emory University (Oxford College) is a residential college of Emory University, a private research university in Atlanta, Georgia. Oxford College is located in Oxford and specializes in the foundations of liberal arts education. The college is located on Emory University's original campus 38 miles (61 km) east of Emory's current Atlanta campus. Students who enroll in Oxford College complete an associate of the arts degree there, after which they can continue their studies at Emory's Atlanta campus to pursue a bachelor degree without any additional applications. Oxford College has an enrollment of nearly 1,000 freshman and sophomore students. Campus organizations include various community service groups, interest clubs, and social clubs, the school's replacement for traditional fraternities and sororities. The university-wide unofficial mascot, a skeleton named "Lord Dooley", has its origins in the Oxford campus. In terms of athletics, the college participates in NJCAA Division III sports, with the men's and women's tennis teams having won national championships multiple times.

It is the location of Oxford College of Emory University. Much of the city is part of the Oxford Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

Orna Villa, also known as the Alexander Means House and the Means/Tanner House, is a historic Greek Revival house located on Emory Street in Oxford, Georgia. Built in 1825, it is the oldest house in Oxford. The house is a work of Richard K. Dearing. The home was owned for a time by Alexander Means, a founder and president of Emory College (the original site of which is now Oxford College of Emory University) and was used as a hospital during the American Civil War. The house has been featured in works on haunted houses because of its alleged association with the ghost of Tobe Means. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1973. Orna Villa was the location of a college frat party in The Vampire Diaries.It is a contributing building within the Oxford Historic District which also is NRHP-listed.
