Addiscombe railway station

Addiscombe was a ward in the London Borough of Croydon, covering much of the Addiscombe and East Croydon areas of London in the United Kingdom. It extended from East Croydon railway station towards Woodside Green but did not actually cover the retail centre of Addiscombe, which was in the neighbouring Ashburton ward. The ward currently formed part of the Croydon Central constituency, which was the most marginal in London at the 2015 General Election, as 165 votes separated the Conservatives and Labour. At the 2017 General Election, Gavin Barwell was ousted as the local MP. Despite achieving the highest numerical vote share for the Conservatives since 1992, he was replaced by Labour's Sarah Jones. Shortly after losing his seat, Barwell was appointed Downing Street Chief of Staff by Theresa May, following the resignations of Fiona Hill and Nick Timothy on 10 June. The population of the ward at the 2011 Census was 16,883. The ward returns three councillors every four years to Croydon Council. In the 2006 London local elections and the 2014 London local elections, the Green Party candidates got more votes than the Liberal Democrat. At the 2014 council elections, Labour retained all three seats. (The lowest Labour vote was 1,962 and the highest Conservative vote was 1,723.) For the 2018 London local elections, the ward was abolished, with the majority becoming Addiscombe West (which also includes part of the old Fairfield ward) and part contributing to Addiscombe East (which also includes part of the old Ashburton ward).

The East India Company Military Seminary was a British military academy at Addiscombe, Surrey, in what is now the London Borough of Croydon. It opened in 1809 and closed in 1861. Its purpose was to train young officers to serve in the East India Company’s own army in India. The institution was formally known as the East India Company Military Seminary (a name the cadets always disliked) until 1855, when the name was changed to the East India Company Military College. In 1858, when the college was taken over by the government, it was renamed the Royal India Military College. Colloquially, it was known as Addiscombe Seminary, Addiscombe College, or Addiscombe Military Academy. The Seminary was a sister institution to the East India Company College in Hertfordshire, which trained civilian "writers" (clerks). In military terms it was a counterpart to the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.

Addiscombe Railway Park, also known as the Addiscombe Linear Park, is a 3.3 acres (1.3 ha) park in Addiscombe, South London, managed by the London Borough of Croydon. The first section of the park was opened on 26 May 2007, with the second stage opened on 15 March 2010. The bus services which serve the site of Addiscombe station are London Buses routes 289, 312 and 367 while route 197 runs closely parallel to the park. The nearest tram stop is Blackhorse Lane.

Lebanon Road tram stop is a light rail stop in the London Borough of Croydon in the southern suburbs of London. It serves the residential area along Addiscombe Road to the east of the centre of the town of Croydon. The stop is named after Lebanon Road, a cross-street in the vicinity of the stop. The tram stop is served by all Tramlink routes. The tram stop is within the section of route where the tram line runs within Addiscombe Road, sharing road space with buses and local traffic. The two platforms are located on each side of the two lane road, but are staggered laterally rather than being opposite each other.

Sandilands tram stop is a light rail stop in the London Borough of Croydon in the southern suburbs of London. It serves the residential area along Addiscombe Road to the east of the centre of the town of Croydon. The tram stop is served by all Tramlink routes.

Al Khair is a primary and secondary school in the heart of East Croydon.

On 9 November 2016, a tram operated by Tramlink derailed and overturned on a sharp bend approaching a junction. Of a total 69 passengers, there were seven fatalities and 62 injured, 19 of whom sustained serious injuries. This was the first tram incident in the United Kingdom in which passengers died since 1959.The service was running from New Addington to Wimbledon via Croydon, and was on the approach to Sandilands tram stop soon after 06:00. The second interim report into the accident indicated that although the speed limit approaching the junction was 20 km/h (12 mph), the tram had been travelling at approximately 73 km/h (45 mph). Driver error was found to be the cause of the accident.A Rail Accident Investigation Branch investigation found that the driver of the tram had had a microsleep before the crash. An inquest returned verdicts of accidental death on all seven victims. In March 2022, the Office of Rail and Road announced that it was to prosecute the driver of the tram, Tram Operations Limited and Transport for London over the accident.

Addiscombe tram stop is a light rail stop in the London Borough of Croydon in the southern suburbs of London. The tram stop is located between Bingham Road and Lower Addiscombe Road, on a section of line which follows the trackbed of the former Woodside and South Croydon Railway. However the former railway was on an embankment at this point and crossed over both roads on bridges. During construction of Tramlink, the embankment was removed, the bridges replaced with level crossings and the tram stop built at street level. The tram stop is built on the site of Bingham Road Halt on the Woodside and South Croydon Railway which was closed in 1915. A new station Bingham Road opened in 1935 was situated on the other (south) side of Bingham Road but closed in 1983. The same railway's Addiscombe station was located on a branch line, about 500 metres to the west.

Bingham Road railway station was in Addiscombe, Croydon on the Woodside and South Croydon Joint Railway. It was opened on 1 September 1906 on the north side of Bingham Road, with two wooden platforms without buildings and was closed on 15 March 1915 as a wartime economy measure. A new station on the south side of Bingham Road was opened in 1935 and finally closed in 1983. The modern Addiscombe tram stop (open 2000) at ground level is situated at the location of the first halt closed in 1915 which was situated on an embankment above the present site.

Sandilands Tunnel is an ex-railway, brick arch tunnel in south London, currently serving the Croydon Tramway, which cuts through the Park Hill area on the eastern border of Croydon and serves as a key section of the Tramlink route connecting central Croydon, from West Croydon to New Addington.

Roberts Cycles is a custom bicycle frame building business, originally located in Selhurst near Croydon, South London, now located in East Sussex, England. Beginning soon after World War II, Charles (Charlie) Benjamin Roberts was a frame-builder for Holdsworth, Claud Butler and Freddie Grubb. In the 1960s, he founded Roberts Cycles at the family home in Sydenham - he was joined in the workshop by his oldest son Charles, and then by his youngest son Geoff. In 1979, Charlie Roberts died unexpectedly and Charles, began managing the business (which by then had moved from Sydenham to Anerley, South London) with his brother, Geoff and Derek Bailey continuing to build frames. The shop at Gloucester Road, Croydon was closed at the end of May 2015. Charles Roberts (Chas, the oldest son) then left the business. Roberts Cycles, relocated to the Sussex coast, where Geoff Roberts continues the family business, Roberts Cycles, building and repairing frames Production was limited by capacity to 100 steel frames per year, and they were made in a bespoke manner to the dimensions, mass and equipment specification requirements of the customer. A mixture of Reynolds and Columbus tubing was used in construction, which was all completed in-house. Painting was originally done in house, but was then outsourced and completed to a high standart. The range includes bicycles built specifically for competition (road race,track) recreational (tandems, tricycles, mountain bikes, touring). Bicycles bearing the name Roberts, are all hand made in Sussex, by Geoff Roberts, using steel tube sets. Complete bicycles, or frames, can be built to customer specifications, can be built to the exact specific requirements of the customer.
