Ness, Cheshire

Ness Botanic Gardens are at Ness, Cheshire in the Wirral Peninsula. This is near the cities of Liverpool and Chester and close to the English-Welsh border. They occupy a site of 64 acres overlooking the Dee Estuary. The Ness Botanic Gardens were created by Arthur Kilpin Bulley (1861-1942), a wealthy cotton trader from Liverpool and benefited from collections by many plant hunters including George Forrest and Frank Kingdon-Ward.Arthur Bulley began to create the garden in 1898. In 1948, a few years after his death, Lois Bulley, his daughter, gave the gardens, to the University of Liverpool, under a Conditional Trust. One condition of the Trust is that the gardens must remain open to the public. They are on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens and are Grade II. The gardens have many fine specimen trees and flowers. Magnolias, rhododendron, witch-hazels and camellias are some of the notable plant-hunted species in the garden. Snowdrop walks are conducted during the flowering season.

Burton Point railway station was located on the northern side of Station Road, at Burton, Cheshire, England. The station opened on 1 August 1899 on the North Wales and Liverpool Railway. The station closed to passengers, and completely, on 5 December 1955. Although the platform waiting rooms and footbridge were demolished after closure, the yellow and redbrick main building remains in use as part of a garden centre and the platforms are still in existence. The line through the former station remains in use as part of the Borderlands Line.

Little Neston is a village south of Neston and situated on the Wirral Peninsula, Cheshire, England. Little Neston is administratively part of Cheshire West and Chester and had a population of 3,390 at the 2001 Census.The settlement was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Little Nestone. Together with Neston, it is a former mining village, with shafts dug out underneath the River Dee. The marshes of the River Dee are popular with bird watchers and horticulturalists because of the wide range of flora and fauna to be found in the area. Lord Nelson's mistress, Emma Hamilton, was born in nearby Ness and is remembered locally with the Lady Hamilton pub. Little Neston is home to St Winifride's RC Primary School on Mellock Lane and Woodfall Primary School on Woodfall Lane. Neston Primary School on Burton Road is also in Little Neston. The nearest high school is Neston High School in Raby Park Road, Neston.

Burton Mere Wetlands (grid reference SJ304744) is a nature reserve on the Dee Estuary straddling the border between Cheshire, England and Flintshire, Wales. It is run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and incorporates the older Inner Marsh Farm reserve. It lies near the village of Burton, about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) south of Neston. It has all been developed by the RSPB and includes a large area of mixed wetland habitats, bluebell woodlands, and arable fields all managed to attract wildlife. The reserve is open from 9am until 9pm (or dusk if sooner) and the reception hide is open from 9:30am until 5pm. There is a charge for non-members of the RSPB.

Neston South railway station was a station on the single track Hooton to West Kirby branch of the Birkenhead Railway, on the Wirral Peninsula, Cheshire, England. The station served the town of Neston.

Burton Point is an Iron Age promontory fort located 1 mile (1.6 km) to the southeast of the village of Burton, in the Wirral Peninsula, Cheshire, England. The site, which overlooks the estuary of the River Dee, consists of tree-covered earthworks in the form of a bank and ditch. The area to the north of which has been quarried for its underlying sandstone. The fort is a scheduled monument. To the south of the fort is a burial site that was excavated in 1878, revealing the remains of between 50 and 60 burials. It is not known whether these are of an early Christian date, or if they are the remains of a local shipwreck in 1637.The site once formed a promontory on the original course of the River Dee. In the early 18th century, a new channel was constructed on the Welsh side of the estuary to improve navigation to the Port of Chester. This led to the headland becoming landlocked to the reclaimed farmland of Sealand, Flintshire.

St Mary and St Helen Church is in the town of Neston, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Wirral South. Its benefice is combined with that of St Michael, Little Neston. St Thomas' Church, Parkgate, is a chapel of ease in the parish.

Burton Manor is a former manor house in the village of Burton, Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. At one time an adult education college, this is now closed, but the walled garden is open to the public and is administered by the Friends of Burton Manor Gardens.

Neston High School is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form with academy status located in Neston on the Wirral Peninsula, in the English county of Cheshire.Previously a community school administered by Cheshire West and Chester Council, Neston High School converted to academy status in July 2012. The school continues to coordinate with Cheshire West and Chester Council for admissions.
