The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway opened to Newton in 1930. The current station building was constructed in a Tudor Revival – modeled after William Shakespeare's house in Stratford-on-Avon – in 1929–30. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. In 2021, Amtrak proposed to extend the Heartland Flyer to Newton to connect with the Southwest Chief.
