Foster Island (Washington)

The Seattle Open Invitational was a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour in the northwest United States, in the greater Seattle area. It was played eight times over three decades under five names at three locations.

Broadmoor Golf Club is a private golf club in the northwest United States in Seattle, Washington, founded in 1924 and opened for play in April 1927. It is located in the Broadmoor neighborhood of Seattle, just south of the University of Washington and west of Lake Washington. Broadmoor is a tribute to designer/builder A. Vernon "Mac" Macan, a leading golf course architect of the time. Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1882, Macan was a highly educated man, attending Shrewsbury and studying law at Trinity College. In 1908, Macan emigrated to Canada, and was the architect for many golf courses in British Columbia and the northwestern U.S., including Royal Colwood, Inglewood, Fircrest, Columbia Edgewater, Hillcrest, and Colwood National. Golf history hosted at Broadmoor over the years includes the $10,000 Seattle Open in 1945 with Byron Nelson, Jug McSpaden, Ben Hogan, and Sam Snead. Nelson took the tournament with a new world's record of 259 for 72 holes, 21 under par, and a victory margin of thirteen strokes. He won a record eighteen tournaments in 1945, including eleven consecutive. In 1952 at the LPGA Tour's Seattle Weathervane tournament, Betsy Rawls bested Babe Zaharias. In 1954, the 52nd Western Amateur brought Jack Benny, Bing Crosby, and Phil Harris to the course. In 1961, Broadmoor hosted the 13th annual U.S. Girls' Junior and the revival of the Seattle Open, where Dave Marr shot a final round 63 (–7) and birdied the first playoff hole to win. With the Seattle World's Fair, the Seattle Open in September 1962 attracted Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, Tony Lema, Ken Venturi, Dave Hill, Julius Boros, Doug Sanders, along with Hollywood stars Bob Hope, James Garner, Don Cherry, Dennis Morgan and Phil Crosby, and a crowd of 6,000 for the pro-am. The tournament was won that year by 22-year-old rookie Jack Nicklaus, his second victory as a professional, following his playoff win over Palmer at the U.S. Open in June. Nicklaus had won $50,000 in the exhibition World Series of Golf the week before, and won in Portland the following week for his third tour title. The Seattle Open was held for the last time at Broadmoor in 1964 and Billy Casper claimed the winner's circle; the tournament continued for two more years, at Inglewood and Everett. The U.S. Women's Amateur in 1974 brought winner Cynthia Hill (of the Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado), Nancy Lopez, and Amy Alcott. More recently, Broadmoor hosted the Pac-10 championship in 1989 and 1999, when Paul Casey of Arizona State lowered the course record to 60 (–10). The current record was set sixteen years later in 2015 by Seattle native Fred Couples, with a round of 59 (–11) in August.

The Arboretum Sewer Trestle (also known as Arboretum Aqueduct, Arboretum Aqueduct and Sewer Trestle, or Wilcox Footbridge) is a historic multiarched concrete-and-brick trestle and footbridge in the Washington Park Arboretum in Seattle, Washington. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1982 (ID #82004229). It also has city landmark status, with ID #106070. As observed in a letter to the City Engineering Department in 1912, "The bridge is not an 'apurtenance of the sewer.' It is a piece of ornamental bridge architecture designed elaborately and is a very much greater thing than the sewer itself, in every way."

Broadmoor is an 85 acre (340,000 m²) gated residential community with a 115 acre (465,000 m²) golf course in Seattle, Washington, United States. It is bounded on the west by the Washington Park Arboretum, on the south by E. Madison Street, beyond which is the Washington Park neighborhood, on the east by 37th Avenue E., beyond which is the Madison Park neighborhood, and on the north by Union Bay marshland. It was founded on September 10, 1924. Broadmoor was developed on land that had been logged by the Puget Mill Company for sixty years. In 1920, the parcel was split in two. The western 230 acres (930,000 m²) were given to the city, who developed Washington Park on the site; the eastern 200 acres (800,000 m²) were developed as Broadmoor by a group of businessmen that included E. G. Ames, general manager of Puget Mill. Like other developments by Puget Mill, Broadmoor was built as a racially segregated neighborhood, using exclusionary covenants to block prospective home buyers of certain races and ethnicities. For example, a 1928 covenant blocked "any Hebrew or by any person of the Ethiopian, Malay or any Asiatic Race".

Washington Park is a public park in Seattle, Washington, United States, most of which is taken up by the Washington Park Arboretum, a joint project of the University of Washington, the Seattle Parks and Recreation, and the nonprofit Arboretum Foundation. Washington Park also includes a playfield and the Seattle Japanese Garden in its southwest corner. To the north is Union Bay; to the west are Montlake and Madison Valley; to the south is the Washington Park neighborhood; and to the east is the Broadmoor Golf Club.

Union Bay is a body of water located in Seattle, Washington. Part of Lake Washington, it is bounded by the Laurelhurst neighborhood to the north and the Montlake and Madison Park neighborhoods to the south. The Evergreen Point Floating Bridge, which carries State Route 520, crosses over a portion of the bay. Marsh Island and Foster Island are located in Union Bay, and are connected to the mainland (and each other) by the Arboretum Waterfront Trail and the Foster Island Trail. Union Bay ends at the eastern opening of the Montlake Cut, which connects Union Bay with Portage Bay (an arm of Lake Union) to the west—this marks the beginning of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, which runs through Seattle and connects Lake Washington to Puget Sound. Broken Island is adjacent to Husky Stadium and was formed in 1916 when Lake Washington was lowered several feet by the opening of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. The island, and the wetlands in which it sits on the lake's shore, were "the result of conversion of shallow water lake habitats following lake level lowering." The island's soil is mostly peat laid down from earlier times.

East Montlake Park is a park in the Montlake neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, USA. The park is bounded on the north by the Montlake Cut, on the east by Union Bay, on the south by Washington State Route 520, and on the west by East Park Drive E. The 1971 Montlake Cut Waterside Trail runs through the park past the 40-foot totem pole shown at right on its way to West Montlake Park. A plaque at the bottom of the totem pole states that it was carved in 1937 by John Dewey Wallace, a Haida chief, in Waterfall, Alaska. The dedication ceremony for the donated totem pole took place in May 1983. Before construction of the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge replacement, McCurdy Park, formerly home to the Museum of History and Industry, existed to the south and east.

The Associated Students of the University of Washington (ASUW) Shell House, also known as the UW Canoe House, is a historic building on the University of Washington campus in Seattle, Washington. The building was constructed in 1918 as a Navy seaplane hangar during World War I. It was later used as a shell house for the University of Washington men's rowing team from 1920 to 1949 and a canoe rental space until 1975. The building is located northeast of the Montlake Cut on Union Bay.The shell house was home to the famous 1936 Olympic Gold medal-winning UW Men's Rowing team until the rowing program's eventual transfer to the Conibear Shellhouse facility in 1949. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2018, UW Recreation began campaigning for a $13 million restoration of the old shell house to shed light on its history and enrich the waterfront.

McCurdy Park was a 1.5-acre (6,100 m2) park in the Montlake neighborhood of the U.S. city of Seattle, Washington. Formerly home to the Museum of History and Industry, it was effectively bounded on the west by the museum and East Montlake Park, on the south by State Route 520, on the east by the Washington Park Arboretum, and on the north by Union Bay marshland. However, there was no obvious demarcation between McCurdy Park, East Montlake Park, and the Arboretum. McCurdy Park no longer exists because of the land's use a staging area for the construction of the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge replacement.

Husky Softball Stadium is the home stadium for the Division I (NCAA) Washington Huskies softball team. Located next to Husky Stadium on the campus of University of Washington, the stadium features seating for 1,500 fans. Included in the 1,500 seat capacity is a combination of chair back, theatre, and bleacher seating. The main stands consist of 200 theatre-style seats and 800 bench seats. An additional 500 can be seated when bleachers are added around the stadium perimeter. Overflow viewing is available from the concourses at adjacent Husky Stadium.

The Washington Huskies softball team represents the University of Washington in NCAA Division I college softball competition. A member of the Pac-12 Conference, they play their home games on-campus at Husky Softball Stadium in Seattle, Washington. Through 2020, the Huskies have made 14 appearances at the Women's College World Series and won the national title in 2009.

The Montlake Historic District is a part of Montlake, located northeast of the downtown district in Seattle, Washington that has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since October 15, 2015. It primarily contains residential property. However, there are some other types of buildings within the district such as the Northwest Fisheries Science Center of the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Seattle Yacht Club. It is notable for the architectural styles displayed by homes in the district and the boulevards planned by the Olmsted Brothers in 1903. Architectural styles include Craftsman, Colonial Revival, and Tudor Revival, and vernacular. Most were built between 1905 and 1959, with construction reaching a peak in the 1920s. Construction of the district was spurred by the Olmsted plan as well as the 1909 Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition. Montlake Boulevard, a portion of Lake Washington Boulevard, East Montlake Park, West Montlake Park, Montlake Playfield, Boyer Pocket Park, and the Lake Washington Canal Reserve Land are all parks within the district. The State Route 520 corridor which divides the district into two sections (the northern section of the historic district only has two blocks out of a total of 50) is excluded from the district.
