House of Merode

Langerwehe station is a station in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia on the Cologne–Aachen high-speed railway. It is in the centre of Langerwehe in the district of Düren, about 25 km east of Aachen.

Inden is a municipality in the district of Düren in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located on the river Inde, approx. 10 km north-west of Düren. In the area around Inden lignite is extracted in open-pit mines. One mine is being rehabilitated with lake, park, solar power and energy storage. Several hundreds of inhabitants have been resettled in the 1990s and 2000s because of these activities.

Holzheim Castle (German: Burg Holzheim) is a lowland castle west of Heistern in the municipality of Langerwehe in the county of Düren in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It stands between Heistern and the Bovenberg Forest near Eschweiler-Nothberg and is used today as a farm and riding estate. A small stream, the Holzheimer Graben, runs past the castle to the east. It discharges into the Inde at Hücheln. The castle dates to 1333, and its owners were vassals of the Duchy of Jülich. In the 15th to 17th centuries the manor house and gate tower were built, both of which have survived. In 1818, when the region was part of the Prussia county of Düren, the castle and its estates were sold to private buyers. In 1893 it was bought by Richard Schleicher, who also bought the nearby estate of Schönthal. The property later changed hands several times.

Hürtgenwald is a municipality in the district of Düren in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located in the Eifel hills, approx. 15 km south-west of Düren. Much of the area is covered by forest (Hürtgenwald in literal translation means Hürtgen Forest). Hürtgenwald is composed of the villages Bergstein, Brandenberg, Gey, Großhau, Horm, Hürtgen, Kleinhau, Raffelsbrand, Schafberg, Simonskall, Strass, Vossenack and Zerkall (in alphabetical order). Kleinhau with the town hall is not only the administrational center of the community, but has become the commercial center as well (shops and a few supermarkets). In World War II, Hürtgenwald was the theater of the Battle of Hürtgen Forest, a major battle. Two large war graves (one in Hürtgen, one in Vossenack) are places to commemorate those who fell. Nowadays, the pleasing landscape of forested hills, lakes and rivers attracts a lot of people from nearby densely populated areas, e.g. from the Cologne area and the Ruhr Area, for recreational reasons.

Stadttheater Düren was a theatre in Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The house was built from 1905 to 1907 to a design by Carl Moritz, the architect of the opera house in Cologne, on what is now the Hoeschplatz. A Düren businessman, Eberhard Hoesch, had donated 500,000 Marks for a new theatre; until then performances had been held at inns. After only 14 months of construction, the theatre opened on 17 January 1907. The house in Jugendstil style seated 700 people. The theatre had no permanent ensemble but housed visiting performances, including by actors Willy Birgel, Paul Henckels and Asta Nielsen, pianist Elly Ney and conductor Herbert von Karajan. The theatre was destroyed by bombing in World War II on 16 November 1944. Only the basement and the facade remained. The ruin was demolished in 1952, using the stones for the walls of a cemetery in the Kölnstraße. Theatre performances were resumed in various venues, first on 25 April 1946 in a hall of a hospital (today: LVR-Klinik Düren), then in the hall of the gymnasium Stiftisches Gymnasium, from 30 November 1991 in the municipal Haus der Stadt.
