The 2021 PGA Championship was the 103rd PGA Championship, held May 20–23 in South Carolina at Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Ocean Course on Kiawah Island. It was the second major championship at the Ocean Course; the PGA Championship in August 2012 was won by Rory McIlroy. Without spectators at the previous edition in August 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the PGA of America announced in February 2021 that 10,000 fans would be admitted daily.Phil Mickelson won his second PGA Championship and sixth major, two strokes ahead of runners-up Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen. Aged fifty years and eleven months, he became the oldest to win a major, a distinction previously held by Julius Boros, the winner of the PGA Championship in 1968 at age 48.

The 2012 PGA Championship was the 94th PGA Championship, played August 9–12 at the Ocean Course of the Kiawah Island Golf Resort in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, southwest of Charleston. Rory McIlroy shot a bogey-free 66 (−6) in the final round to win his second major title by eight strokes over runner-up David Lynn.The victory margin was a record for the PGA Championship, surpassing the seven-stroke win in 1980 by Jack Nicklaus for his fifth PGA and seventeenth major title. The winner of the U.S. Open in 2011, also by eight strokes, McIlroy became the sixth-youngest winner of two majors at 23 years and 3 months.Television coverage was provided in the United States by CBS and TNT, and in the United Kingdom by Sky Sports. It was the first major championship at Kiawah Island; the Ocean Course hosted the Ryder Cup in 1991. The PGA Championship returned in May 2021.

The Stono River or Creek is a tidal channel in southeast South Carolina, located southwest of Charleston. The channel runs southwest to northeast between the mainland and Wadmalaw Island and Johns Island, from north Edisto River between Johns (West) and James (East) Islands. The Intracoastal Waterway runs through southwest–northeast section of the channel.The Stono River is noted for the Stono Rebellion which started on September 9, 1739. Started by slaves from West Africa, likely from the Kingdom of Kongo, it became the largest slave uprising in the British mainland colonies prior to the American Revolution. On June 20, 1779, it was also the site of the Battle of Stono Ferry during the American Revolution. On January 30, 1863, as part of the American Civil War, a Confederate force captured the Union steamer USS Isaac Smith in which 8 men died and a further 17 were wounded in crossfire.

The Arnoldus Vander Horst House is a plantation house on Kiawah Island, South Carolina. It is named for Arnoldus Vanderhorst, who was a governor of South Carolina.The house was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on October 25, 1973.

Kiawah ( KEY-ə-wə) is a sea island, or barrier island, on the Atlantic coast of the United States. Located 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Charleston in Charleston County, South Carolina, it is primarily a private beach and golf resort. It is home to the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, with spacious villas, beaches, large and acclaimed golf courses, and other attractions. As of the 2010 census, Kiawah Island's population was 1,626, up from 1,163 at the 2000 census. The island is part of the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville metropolitan area. Alternative spellings and variants of the name itself include "Kiawa", "Kittiwar" (in DuBose Heyward's novel Porgy), and "Kittiwah" (in George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess). Census Tract 21.04, located on the island, has a per capita income of $168,369, the highest in South Carolina. [1]

The Battle of James Island (also known as the Skirmish at James Island) was a minor skirmish near the end of the American Civil War. It was known as the "Last fight for Charleston".

The Progressive Club is a historic clubhouse located at Johns Island, Charleston County, South Carolina. It was built in 1963, and provided a home for Esau Jenkins' Progressive Club's legal and financial assistance program, adult education program, and dormitory lodging. It also served as a community recreational, child care, meeting place and grocery store. The building was built to house a "Citizenship School" where adult education classes and workshops enabled African-American citizens to register, vote, and become aware of the political processes of their communities. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

Moving Star Hall is a historic community building located at Johns Island, Charleston County, South Carolina. It was built about 1917, and is a crudely built, one-story, rectangular, frame, weatherboarded building. It has a low concrete block pillar foundation and a metal-covered gable roof. Also on the property is a contributing outhouse. The building was used by the local African-American population as a "praise house" and meeting place of the Moving Star Young Association, a religious, social, fraternal, and charitable community institution.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Mosquito Beach Historic District located on James Island, South Carolina was the weekend destination for thousands of African Americans during the height of Jim Crow. It was added to the National Historic Register on September 23, 2019. The 8.36-acre site, located between two creeks, was formerly owned by a member of the Legare family. In the 1950s, African Americans began using the land, which was more akin to a dirt road on a creek rather than a natural beach, for recreation. The four structures and corresponding pavilions were a safe refuge for the community. Usage of Mosquito Beach declined after nearby Folly Beach was desegregated.The owner of the Pine Tree Hotel, one of the remaining structures in the historic district, received a $490,000 grant for the restoration and renovation of the hotel from the National Park Service's African American History Civil Rights program in 2020. The structure was going to be almost completely rebuilt and further lifted to avoid floods in the area. However, on April 15, 2022, a fire destroyed the structure. Nonetheless, because the Historic Charleston Foundation was in the process of reconstructing it, "windows, roof trusses, and other materials" had already been removed and will be used for the reconstruction of the hotel.

The 1997 World Cup of Golf took place 20–23 November at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, U.S. It was the 43rd World Cup. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event (32 teams) with each team consisting of two players from a country. The combined score of each team determined the team results. Individuals also competed for the International Trophy. The prize money totaled $1,500,000 with $400,000 going to the winning pair and $100,000 to the top individual. The Irish team of Pádraig Harrington and Paul McGinley won by five strokes over the Scottish team of Colin Montgomerie and Raymond Russell. Colin Montgomerie took the International Trophy by two strokes over Alex Čejka.

The 2003 WGC-World Cup took place November 13–16 at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, U.S. It was the 49th World Cup and the fourth as a World Golf Championship event. 24 countries competed and each country sent two players. The prize money totaled $4,000,000 with $1,400,000 going to the winning pair. The South African team of Rory Sabbatini and Trevor Immelman won. They won by four strokes stroke over the English team of Paul Casey and Justin Rose.

Kiawah Island Golf Resort is a resort at Kiawah Island, South Carolina which is located along a ten-mile (16 km) mix of island and beachfront property approximately thirty miles (50 km) southwest of Charleston. Opened in May 1974 it consistently ranks as one of the country’s top resorts.The resort is home to The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, a Forbes Five Star/AAA Five Diamond 255-room hotel and spa.
