Gate of Dawn

Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn (Lithuanian: Aušros Vartų Dievo Motina, Polish: Matka Boska Ostrobramska, Belarusian: Маці Божая Вастрабрамская, Russian: Остробрамская икона Божией Матери) is the prominent Christian icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary venerated by the faithful in the Chapel of the Gate of Dawn in Vilnius, Lithuania. The painting was historically displayed above the Vilnius city gate; city gates of the time often contained religious artifacts intended to ward off attacks and bless passing travelers. The painting is in the Northern Renaissance style and was completed most likely around 1630. The Virgin Mary is depicted without the infant Jesus. The artwork soon became known as miraculous and inspired a following. A dedicated chapel was built in 1671 by the Discalced Carmelites. At the same time, possibly borrowing from the Eastern Orthodox tradition, the painting was covered in an expensive and elaborate silver and gold riza, leaving only the face and hands visible. On 5 July 1927, the image was canonically crowned by Pope Pius XI. The chapel was later visited by Pope John Paul II in 1993. It is a major site of pilgrimage in Vilnius and attracts many visitors, especially from Poland.

The Vilnius city wall (Lithuanian: Vilniaus miesto gynybinė siena) was a defensive wall around Vilnius, capital city of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It was built between 1503 and 1522 for protection from the attacks by the Crimean Khanate at the beginning of the Muscovite–Lithuanian Wars. The stone and brick wall was a key element of the defensive system of Vilnius, and was paid for by the city's landowners. It contained nine gates and an artillery bastion. Some of the original constructions have survived. Wet Gate stood near Cathedral Square in Vilnius. Called also Mary Magdalene Gate. Tatar Gate stood at the corner of Liejykla and Totoriai street. Vilija (Vilnius) Gate stood at the corner of Vilnius and Bernardinai street. Trakai Gate was built at the corner of Trakai and Pylimas streets. It was the main gate of the city and contained (as did the Gate of Dawn) a chapel. Rūdininkai Gate stood at the end of the Rūdininkai street. Sharp Gate (Polish: Ostra brama) guarded the entrance to the southern part of the city. It is now known as the Gate of Dawn. The sometimes mentioned name "Medininkai Gate" is not directly attested in the sources. Subačius Gate was built at the end of what is now Holly Spirit street. Saviour's Gate (Polish: Spaska brama) was built near the Vilnia River in the eastern side of city. Bernardines Gate Castle GateAn artillery bastion was built to protect the eastern side of the city. It is currently a museum of militaria from Vilnius and is under renovation. Following the partitions of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Russian government ordered to tear down most of the wall and all the gates, except the Gate of Dawn. Some parts of the wall are still visible throughout the Old Town of Vilnius or are going to be restored and displayed.

Church of St. Theresa (Lithuanian: Šv. Teresės bažnyčia, Polish: Kościół św. Teresy) is a Roman Catholic church in Vilnius' Old Town, close to the Gate of Dawn. It was completed in 1650.

Monastery of the Holy Trinity (Ukrainian: Монастир Святої Трійці, Lithuanian: Vienuolynas ir Šv. Trejybės cerkvė, Polish: monaster św. Trójcy) is a monastery built in Vilnius by the Ruthenian Church and Grand Hetman of Lithuania Konstanty Ostrogski as a thanksgiving to the God for the victory in Battle of Orsha. It now belongs to the Order of Saint Basil the Great and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Beside this church, the monastery compound contains a fortified entrance gate, a university, a hotel complex for visitors, monastic cells including the Konrad's cell. The church is surrounded by adjoining four towers at each corner. This monastery is associated with the Union of Brest personalities like Josaphat Kuntsevych, Archbishop of Polatsk who took vows here and spent first years of his monastic life, as well as a prominent reformer of the Basilian Order, Veliamyn Rutsky.

The Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit (Russian: Церковь Святого Духа; Lithuanian: Vilniaus Šv. Dvasios vienuolyno katedra) is a Russian Orthodox church in the Vilnius Old Town, capital of Lithuania, rebuilt 1749–1753 in the Vilnian Baroque style. The monastery serves as the headquarters of the Russian Orthodox Diocese of Lithuania. It should not be confused with the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit in Vilnius.

The Monastery of the Holy Spirit is an Orthodox monastery in Vilnius that has been continuously operating since 1609. In the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, it was one of the most important centers of Orthodoxy. After the annexation of the Vilnius region to the Russian Empire, the monastery was elevated to a second-rank and then a first-rank monastery. Since 1845, it has served as the residence of the Bishops of Vilnius and Lithuania. Operating legally within the borders of the Second Polish Republic since 1924, it continued its functions without interruption even after Vilnius became part of the Soviet Union. Its church, dedicated to the same invocation as the entire monastery, is a place of special veneration for the Vilnius martyrs – Saints Anthony, John, and Eustathius – whose relics are kept in the main nave of the church. The monastery occupies a complex of one-story buildings in a courtyard behind an ornate entrance gate at 10 Aušros Vartų Street.

Vilnius International French Lyceum (French: Lycée International Français de Vilnius or LIFV, Lithuanian: Vilniaus tarptautinis prancūzų licėjus) is a French international school in Vilnius, Lithuania. It has preschool through senior high school levels. It has a preschool and grade 1 building and a building with all other grades. It is affiliated with the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE).It was formerly known as the Ecole Française de Vilnius.

ISM University of Management and Economics is an institution of undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate education in business, management and economics. The university serves as a centre of market analysis, executive training and academic thought. ISM was established in Kaunas in 1999 as the first privately owned institution of management education in Lithuania. The main founders of ISM are the BI Norwegian Business School and the Norwegian Industrial and Regional Development fund. The predecessor of ISM was the Business Training Centre, an executive training institution in Lithuania. Since 1995, when the Business Training Centre began, the intention was to contribute to the development of Lithuanian business community in providing up-to-date management knowledge. By offering executive courses, management training programs, market research, and personnel evaluation, BMC was recognized as an institution of management training and consulting in Lithuania. Now BMC is the training and consulting department at ISM.

Make Everything Great Again was a street art mural by artists Dominykas Čečkauskas and Mindaugas Bonanu. It was located on the wall of the barbecue restaurant Keulė Rūkė (Lithuanian for "Smoking Pig" (literal translation "The pig was smoking")) in the railway station area of old town of Vilnius in Lithuania. The mural depicting then U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump giving a fraternal kiss to the Russian president Vladimir Putin was unveiled in May 2016. The caption Make Everything Great Again plays on Trump's campaign slogan "Make America Great Again". The Keulė Rūkė restaurant closed its doors in October 2019. Since July 2019, the mural was reported to have been painted over with a message "make empathy great again", although a small version of the original mural remained on a wall in the inner courtyard of the building.

Subačius Gate was arguably one of the most important gates in the city of Vilnius, leading strategic way to Vitebsk, Polock, Smolensk and Moscow. The gate was first mentioned in 1528 and reconstructed in the 17th century, forming a seamless defensive line in the southeast of Vilnius. It was noted for tremendous fortification as it not only had upper firing shells but also machicolations. The gate was demolished on May 27, 1801 under Russian magistrate command. Some gate bricks were used for barracks furnaces and merchants palace reconstruction. Only small amount of gate foundations have remained until nowadays.

The Church of St. Casimir (Lithuanian: Šv. Kazimiero bažnyčia, Polish: Kościół Św. Kazimierza) is a Roman Catholic church in Vilnius' Old Town, close to the Vilnius' Town Hall. It is the first and the oldest baroque church in Vilnius, built in 1618. The construction of the church began in 1604 in memory of the holy prince Saint Casimir. It was built by the Jesuits with funding by the Great Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Lew Sapieha, Voivode of Vilnius Mikołaj Krzysztof "the Orphan" Radziwiłł, and other nobles. It is traditionally assumed that the corner stone (which can be seen on the façade wall) was pulled into the city by procession of 700 Vilniusites from the Antakalnis hills. The construction was finished in 1616, and the interior design completed in 1618. The Church of St. Casimir is one of the earliest exemplary Baroque buildings in the city. Its spatial composition and facade were designed along the line of the famous Il Gesù church in Rome. The shape of the building was modeled after the churches in Kraków and Lublin, with additional towers. The author of the design was Jan Frankiewicz, a pupil of architect Giovanni Maria Bernardoni. In the middle of the 18th century the church was reconstructed by architect Thomas Zebrowski. Under his supervision a stepped lantern cupola with a crown was erected. This large and impressive cupola is unique in the entire region of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Under Russia's occupation the church of St. Casimir was converted into a Russian Orthodox church. In 1915 Vilnius was occupied by the Germans and the church was converted into the Evangelical Lutheran prayer house of the Vilnius Garrison. In 1919 the church of St. Casimir was returned to the Catholics, but was damaged again during the Second World War, closed down and in 1963 converted into a Museum of Atheism. The church was reconsecrated in 1991. The church is known for excellent acoustics and organ concerts with renowned international musicians.

Abramavičiai Palace is a building in Vilnius Old Town, Rotušė square. Currently it is owned by Vilnius Juozas Tallat-Kelpša conservatory.
