Bungay

Bungay Castle is a Grade I listed building in the town of Bungay, Suffolk.

St Mary's Church is a redundant Anglican church in the town of Bungay, Suffolk, England. The church and the ruins of the adjacent priory are recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and are under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The church stands in the centre of the town on St Mary's Street, the A144 road.

Bungay Priory was a Benedictine nunnery in the town of Bungay in the English county of Suffolk. It was founded c. 1160-1185 by the Countess Gundreda, wife or widow of Hugh Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk, upon lands of her maritagium and was confirmed to her and her second husband Roger de Glanville by King Henry II. It was dissolved in about 1536. At the time of the suppression it consisted of a prioress and 11 nuns. The priory church, the Church of the Holy Cross, became the Church of St Mary, the parish church in Bungay. Although ruins of the priory remain to the east of the church, any remaining intact buildings are likely to have been destroyed in the Bungay fire of 1688 which severely damaged the church itself. The church and the ruins of the priory are a Grade I listed building.Date of foundation The foundation date of c. 1160, proposed in some older authorities, represents an earliest possible date, and is unconfirmed. Gundreda, daughter of Roger de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Warwick, was the second wife of Hugh Bigod, and not of his father Roger Bigod. Hugh Bigod died in 1176 or 1177 and Gundreda's marriage to Roger de Glanville followed that. The witnesses to Henry II's charter of confirmation to her include John, Bishop of Norwich who was elected in 1175, and this charter, made at Geddington, Northamptonshire, is confidently dated to 1188. The original foundation however could have been based upon lands received in connection with her first marriage settlement and the confirmation prompted by the second marriage.

Bungay railway station was located on the now disused Waveney Valley Line which ran between Tivetshall and Beccles. The station was closed in 1953 and the buildings eventually demolished to make way for the A143 road. It was one of two stations in Suffolk on the line, which curved across the county boundary then back into Norfolk.

The chicken roundabout is a roundabout located on the A143 road, on the Bungay and Ditchingham bypass in Suffolk, United Kingdom. The roundabout was famous for being the habitat for a large group of feral chickens, which were fed and cared for by a local man until their numbers declined and they were relocated in 2010.

Flixton Road Mill is a tower mill at Bungay, Suffolk, England which has been truncated and converted to residential accommodation. The structure is a Grade II listed building.

Bungay Town Football Club is an English football club based in Bungay, Suffolk. The club are currently members of Anglian Combination Division One and play at the Maltings Meadow Sports Ground.

Bungay High School is a mixed-sex secondary school with academy status in the town of Bungay in the north of the English county of Suffolk. It caters for children aged 11 to 18. The school was founded as Bungay Grammar School in 1565 and became Bungay High School in 1974. It occupies a site on the Queen's Road site to the south of the town centre. The school operates a sixth form on the site of the high school. This caters for post-16 students, including offering a range of vocational and academic qualification. The school also operated North Suffolk Skills Academy in Halesworth, 9 miles (14 km) south of Bungay. This closed in August 2017 due to the lack of funding.In 2021, the school was awarded an Ofsted inspection rating of "good".

Ditchingham is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is located across the River Waveney from Bungay, Suffolk.

Ditchingham was a railway station in Ditchingham, Norfolk on the Waveney Valley Line. Opened on 2 March 1863, it closed to passengers along with the rest of the line in 1953.

Bath Hills is a 12.2-hectare (30-acre) Local Nature Reserve west of Ditchingham in Norfolk. It is owned by South Norfolk District Council and managed by the Broads Authority.This is the sheltered south side of a steep valley, and spring flowers bloom very early as a result.

Earsham is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. Earsham is located 1.7 kilometres (1.1 mi) west of its postal town of Bungay and 21 kilometres (13 mi) south-east of Norwich. The village is located close to the border between Norfolk and Suffolk, and the River Waveney.
