Miller Park, Preston

The Park Hotel was a railway-owned hotel at East Cliff, Preston, Lancashire, England, used for many years as offices, but now being restored as a hotel. The hotel opened in 1883 and was operated jointly by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway and London and North Western Railway. In the 1923 grouping of railway companies, ownership passed to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. When the UK's railways were nationalised in 1948, it passed to the British Transport Commission's Hotels Executive, and thence to British Transport Hotels, who sold it in 1950. It has subsequently been, and as of September 2014 remains, used as offices, and renamed "East Cliff County Offices", by Lancashire County Council, who also had a modern annexe, adjacent. Located on a small hill, the red-brick building overlooks Preston railway station, on the West Coast Main Line, to its north-west and Miller Park and the River Ribble to its south-east. In its heyday, the hotel was connected to the southern end of the main south-bound platform (the modern-day platform 4) at Preston station by a covered footbridgeVarious pre-1923 objects from the hotel are in the National Railway Museum at York. These include Mappin & Webb cutlery and Elkington & Co. tableware and candlesticks, the latter marked with the initials "P.P." and a lamb and flag, the coat of arms of the city.The historic hotel structure was used for many decades as an office building for the Lancashire County Council, along with an adjoining tower, constructed in the 1960s. In 2020, the modern office tower was demolished as part of a plan by the Council to restore the hotel to operation.

Avenham Park is a Grade II* listed public park in Avenham, close to the centre of Preston in Lancashire in the northwest of England, and managed by Preston City Council. The park is located in Preston's Conservation area and leads down to the banks of the River Ribble. It was designed and built in the 1860s.

The Battle of Preston (9–14 November 1715) was the final action of the Jacobite rising of 1715, an attempt to put James Francis Edward Stuart on the British throne in place of George I. After two days of street-fighting, the Jacobite commander Thomas Forster surrendered to government troops under General Charles Wills. It was arguably the last battle fought on English soil.

Preston Catholic College was a Jesuit grammar school for boys in Winckley Square, Preston, Lancashire, England. It opened in 1865 and closed in 1978, when its sixth form merged with two other schools to form Cardinal Newman College.

Winckley Square is situated near the centre of Preston, Lancashire, England, at the west end of Avenham. The history of Winckley Square has been documented by Marian Roberts.The square was first established in 1801, around Town End Field owned by Thomas Winckley, as an exclusive residential area for the town's gentry. It is now occupied mostly by insurance, legal and other business offices, although some residential developments have recently been made. The square's gardens, now an open public park, originally consisted of private plots, each owned by a resident. A statue of Sir Robert Peel stands on one side of the central gardens opposite Cross Street, erected by public subscription in 1852.An Italian-style villa was built in 1850 on the south corner of Cross Street (number 11), which was later used as a County Court office from the 1940s. It was demolished in 1969. On the opposite corner (number 10) was the Winckley Club, a gentlemen's club, and next to it, in Cross Street, the Literary and Philosophical Institution (later called Dr Shepherd's Library and Museum), both built in 1846 and both now demolished. The suffragette Edith Rigby lived at number 28. Winckley Street lies between Winckley Square and Preston's main street of Fishergate. Today it is home to mainly professional and religious service providers, including solicitors practices, a translation company, a Jesuit presbytery (taking up the majority of the northern buildings adjacent to St Wilfrids Church) as well as restaurants.

St Joseph's Orphanage (sometimes known as Mount Street Hospital and other names) is a Grade II listed former orphanage and hospital complex in Preston, Lancashire, England. The complex is located on Theatre Street and Mount Street. The orphanage was constructed and opened in 1872 and a hospital extension was opened in 1877. In more recent years the complex was used as a private care home but that closed in 2003. The complex also includes a tower. The building later became derelict until 2022 when demolition began following redevelopment plans.

West Cliff is a cricket ground in Preston, Lancashire. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1870, when Preston played a United North of England Eleven.In 1936, the ground held its first first-class match when Lancashire played Gloucestershire. From 1936 to 1939, the ground played host to 4 first-class matches involving Lancashire, the last of which saw them play Glamorgan. In 1952, Lancashire returned to the ground where they played a single first-class match against Glamorgan.The ground has also played host to a combined total of 15 Second XI fixtures for the Lancashire Second XI in the Minor Counties Championship, Second XI Championship and Second XI Trophy.Still in use to this day, in local domestic cricket the ground is the home venue of Preston Cricket Club who play in the Palace Shield.

Fishergate Shopping Centre is a shopping centre in the city of Preston in Lancashire, England. It opened in the 1980s as part of a development to revive the western end of Preston's main street, Fishergate. Its northern side is on Fishergate, and its southern side is built on the site of Butler Street Goods Yard, adjacent to the railway station. The car park, along with the station car park, occupies the remainder of the former goods yard and the site of the East Lancashire platforms of the station, which were demolished in the early 1970s. It is the second largest shopping centre in Preston city centre, after St George's Shopping Centre (formerly The Mall). It was sold to Benson Elliot in August 2013, after former owner Agora Shopping Centres Fund was placed into administration.

Preston railway station in Preston, Lancashire, England, is an interchange railway station on the West Coast Main Line, half-way between London Euston and Glasgow Central (206 miles (332 km) from London Euston, 194 mi (312 km) from Glasgow Central). It is served by Avanti West Coast, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express services, plus Caledonian Sleeper overnight services between London and Scotland. It is also served by the Calder Valley line to Leeds and York, and by branch lines to Blackpool, Ormskirk, and Colne. The North Union Railway opened a station on the site in 1838. It was extended in 1850, with new platforms under the separate management of the East Lancashire Railway, and by 1863 London–Scotland trains stopped here to allow passengers to eat in the station dining room. The current station was built in 1880 and extended in 1903 and 1913, when it had 15 platforms. A free buffet for servicemen was provided during both World Wars. The East Lancashire platforms were demolished in the 1970s as connecting lines closed. As well as intercity trains to London Euston, Birmingham New Street, Manchester Piccadilly, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley, the station is served by local trains to other parts of Lancashire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Yorkshire.

Saint Wilfrid's Church is a Roman Catholic church run by the Society of Jesus, in the city centre of Preston, Lancashire, England. It was built in 1793 and is situated between Fishergate and Winckley Square on Chapel Street.

Avenham and Frenchwood are the central communities which make up the Town Centre ward of Preston City Council, in Lancashire, England. The name of the ward was chosen by the Boundary Committee for England prior to Preston being awarded city status. In addition to Avenham and Frenchwood, Town Centre ward consists of the city centre itself, which includes numerous pubs, clubs, and new build housing. Landmarks such as the Harris Museum, and Preston Bus Station are also in this ward. The difference between the new build 6-figure sum properties of Winckley Square and the community association housing in Avenham is stark, as is the continuing regeneration of the city. Avenham and Frenchwood form part of the Lancashire County Council electoral division of Preston City, in addition to the Broadgate and docklands ward of Riversway.

Fishergate Baptist Church in Fishergate, Preston, Lancashire, England was an active Baptist church for more than 150 years, but is now redundant. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. Since 2018 it has housed a French-themed bistro.
