Fälensee

The Hundstein is a mountain in the Alpstein massif of the Appenzell Alps, located south of Schwende in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden. It lies on the range east of the Altmann, between the valleys of the Seealpsee and the Fälensee.

Seealpsee is a lake in the Alpstein range of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Switzerland. At an elevation of 1,143.2 m, the surface area is 13.6 hectares (34 acres). The lake can be reached by foot from Wasserauen or from Ebenalp. It is a popular tourist destination. A network of routes around Ebenalp connects Seealpsee with other notable sights in the Appenzell Alps, such as the Wildkirchli and Säntis. The Seealpsee provides hydroelectric power and drinking water to the town of Appenzell through the Kraftwerk Seealpsee-Wasserauen, which is run by the Feuerschaugemeinde.The Berggasthaus Forelle am Seealpsee, with a large open air terrace, dominates the western end of the lake.

Wildkirchli (lit. 'Wild Chapel') are three interlinked caves situated in the Alpstein massif in the Appenzell Innerrhoden canton of Switzerland, north-east of Mount Säntis Switzerland. The caves are located at a height of 1,477–1,500 m (4,846–4,921 ft). They are notable for the traces of Paleolithic Neanderthal habitation, dating to c. 40,000 BP, and cave bear bones dating to 90,000–40,000 BP. A museum at the site houses a full bear skeleton that was found in one of the caves.

The Furgglenfirst is a multi-summited mountain of the Appenzell Alps located on the border between the Swiss cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden and St. Gallen. The main summit, named Hintere Hüser, has a height of 1,951 metres above sea level.

The Ebenalp (1,640 m) is the northernmost summit of the Appenzell Alps. The mountain is a popular hiking destination and has been accessible by cable car from Wasserauen since 1955. Ebenalp attracts up to 200,000 visitors each year. From the high plateau of the cable car station visitors have a panoramic view of the rolling hills of Appenzell. Trails start at the station and lead to a network of mountain huts. These hiking routes lead to sites such as Säntis and Seealpsee. The nearby Wildkirchli hut can be reached by hiking through a cave.

Hohensax (German: Ruine Hohensax or German: Burg Hohensax) is a ruined castle in the Sennwald municipality in the Swiss canton St. Gallen. The castle was built around 1200 by the barons of Sax, and was destroyed in 1446. In 1248, the castle passed to Ulrich von Sax, founder of the Sax-Hohensax line of the noble family. The castle was plundered in a feud of 1393, and sold together with the villages of Sax and Gams to the dukes of Austria. In the Old Zürich War, the people of Appenzell captured and slighted the castle in 1446. After this, the barons of Hohensax resided in the nearby Forstegg castle at Salez. In 1640, the ruin passed to the barony of Sax-Forstegg, one of the constituent parts of the canton of Linth of the Helvetic Republic in 1798, and later the canton of St. Gallen. It included the villages of Sax, Salez and Gams.

Wasserauen railway station (German: Bahnhof Wasserauen) is a railway station in the district of Schwende-Rüte, in the Swiss canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden. It is located on the 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) metre gauge Gossau–Wasserauen line of Appenzell Railways.

Frischenberg is a ruined castle in Sennwald, canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. It was built in the early 14th century by the lords of Hohensax, probably by Ulrich III von Hohensax some time after 1313. It was destroyed and rebuilt in 1446, and abandoned in 1551. It is located on a rocky ridge at 585 m (1,919 ft) elevation, overlooking the Alpine Rhine Valley. The ruins of the older Hohensax Castle is nearby on the same ridge, at a distance of about 400 m (1,300 ft) The castle was sold to duke Leopold IV of Austria in 1393 along with the Hohensax lordship, but returned to Ulrich Eberhard IV of Hohensax as a fief. In the Appenzell War of 1405, the castle was occupied by Appenzell and became detached from the lordship of Hohensax. It was bought by Ulrich von Hohensax in 1440, but in 1446, the castle was again attacked by Appenzell, in the context of the Old Zürich War, and was destroyed. Frischenberg was bought to Albrecht V of Hohensax in 1454. After the St. Gallerkrieg of 1489/90 it passed to the Swiss Confederacy, who gave it to Ulrich IX of Hohensax. Ulrich incorporated the lordship of Frischenberg into Sax-Forstegg in 1517. The castle was abandoned by Ulrich Philipp von Hohensax, who built his new residence in Sax (now part of Sennwald municipality).

The Altenalp Türm (2,033 metres) is a peak of the Alpstein massif, located in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, on the ridge between Ebenalp and the Säntis. It is the northernmost peak rising above 2,000 metres in Switzerland.

Sämtisersee is a lake in the Alpstein range of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Switzerland. At an elevation of 1209 m, the surface area is 13 ha (32 acres). It is located below Hoher Kasten not far from Fälensee.

The Altmann is a mountain in the Appenzell Alps, located on the border between the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden and St. Gallen. It is situated in the massif of the Alpstein north of Wildhaus (St. Gallen), a few kilometres from the Säntis. The Altmann is a steep limestone tower, which rises about 1000 metres over the valleys of the Alpstein. The normal route starts at Rotsteinpass (2,120 metres) on the north-west side and is considered an easy climb.
