Pikine Department

Pikine is a city in the Pikine Department of the Dakar Region of Senegal. Lying to the east of Dakar city centre, at the 2013 Census it had a population of 1,170,791. The department includes the villages of Yeumbeul, Thiaroye, Mbao, and Keur Massar Malika. Until the mid-2000s, it also included Guédiawaye, which now forms a separate Department. The city was founded in 1952 by the colonial government for former residents of Dakar who were relocated for new developments. This original city is now known as "Old Pikine", while an informal community has grown up around it. The Grande Niaye de Pikine, a green area known for market gardening, lies to the north west of Pikine.

Cap-Vert is a volcanic field in Senegal with a surface of 100 square kilometres (39 sq mi). The field covers the Cape Verde peninsula close to Dakar and was active until 600,000 years ago. It consists of a number of outcrops and two 100 metres (330 ft) high hills. The position of the dykes and lava flows has been influenced by local fault systems.

The Thiaroye massacre (French: Massacre de Thiaroye; pronounced [tja.ʁwa]) was a massacre of French West African veterans of the 1940 Battle of France, by French forces on the morning of 1 December 1944. These Tirailleurs Sénégalais units had been recently liberated from prisoner camps and after being repatriated to West Africa, they mutinied against poor conditions and defaulted pay at the Thiaroye military camp, on the outskirts of Dakar, Senegal. Between 35 and over 300 people were killed.

Guédiawaye Department is one of the 45 departments of Senegal and one of the four making up Dakar Region on the Cap-Vert peninsula. It comprises a single arrondissement, Guédiawaye Arrondissement, which is subdivided into 5 communes d'arrondissement : Ndiarème-Limamoulaye Golf Sam-Notaire Wakhinane-Nimzatt Médina-GounassPopulationIn the census of December 2002 the population of the department was recorded as 258,370. In 2005, it was estimated at 286,989.

Guédiawaye is a town and département of the Dakar Region of Senegal. Lying on the Atlantic Ocean to the north east of Dakar city centre, in 2013 it had a population of 329,659. Until the mid-2000s, the département was part of Pikine.

Parcelles Assainies is a commune d'arrondissement of the city of Dakar, Senegal. As of 2013 it had a population of 159,498.

Cambérène is a commune d'arrondissement of the city of Dakar, Senegal. As of 2013 it had a population of 52,420.

The Hann Forest and Zoological Park (French: Parc forestier et zoologique de Hann) is a nature reserve located in Dakar, the capital of the African country of Senegal, in the Hann Bel-Air commune.

Hann is a neighbourhood of Dakar, the capital of Senegal. It is located on the eastern side of the small south facing peninsula on which the old city of Dakar was built. Hann neighborhood sits along a crescent shaped beach called Hann Bay. Hann is part of the Hann Bel-Air commune d'arrondissement: a part of the municipal Dakar Department which covers the city of Dakar. Hann is one of the four original Lebou villages of the Cap-Vert Peninsula, along with Yoff, Ngor, and Ouakam.

Grand Yoff is a commune d'arrondissement of the city of Dakar, Senegal. As of 2013 it had a population of 185,503. It is composed of 66 sub-districts, each represented by a district delegate. Grand Yoff is part of the Parcelles Assainies district. The neighborhood of Grand Yoff is the most populated neighborhood in Dakar, and the 7th most populated in Senegal.

Thiaroye (or Tiaroye) is the name of a historic town in Sénégal, situated in the suburbs of Dakar, on the southeast coast of the Cap-Vert peninsula, between Pikine and Rufisque. Since the administrative reform in 1996, Thiaroye has been divided into independent communes, Thiaroye-Gare, Thiaroye-sur-Mer and Thiaroye-Kao (or Djiddah Thiaroye Kao), with Guinaw-Rail Nord, Guinaw-Rail Sud (both to the west), and Tivaouane-Diacksao (to the east) split off and separating Thiaroye-sur-Mer from the other two inland communes.
