Muscogee County is a county located on the central western border of the U.S. state of Georgia named after the Muscogee that originally inhabited the land with its western border with the state of Alabama that is formed by the Chattahoochee River. As of the 2020 census, the population was 206,922. Its county seat and only city is Columbus, with which it has been a consolidated city-county since the beginning of 1971. Muscogee County is part of the Columbus, GA–AL, metropolitan statistical area. The only other city in the county was Bibb City, a company town that disincorporated in December 2000, two years after its mill closed permanently. Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning), a large Army installation, takes up nearly one quarter of the county and extends into Chattahoochee County; it generates considerable economic power in the region.

Shaw High School (Georgia)

William Henry Shaw High School is located in Columbus, Georgia, United States. It opened in 1978 at its present location in the Northern Columbus area. Students began attending classes in September of the same year. The school is named in honor of former Muscogee County School District Superintendent William Henry Shaw. Its original proposed name was Schomburg North High School. Although Shaw is one of the newer high schools in Columbus, it has achieved academic and athletic success in its short history. Academically, Shaw High School was named a "School of Excellence" by the Georgia Department of Education in 1984 and 2005. In 2005, Shaw High School was also a recipient of the State of Georgia Platinum Award: Greatest Gain in Students Meeting and Exceeding Standards. In 2006, the Georgia DOE named Shaw a "Distinguished School" for academic achievement, one of two Muscogee County School District Schools to achieve this honor. In 2009, Georgia State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox named Shaw High School as an AP Access and Support School: schools with 30% of AP test takers who are African-American or Hispanic and at least 30% of all AP exam takers scoring 3 or higher. Shaw High School was one of only two Muscogee County School District Schools to receive AP Honors in 2009. Shaw High School has bolstered five state titles in athletics: girls' track in 1977, 1999, and 2000; football in 2000; and baseball in 2001. Shaw High School's Raider Football program was the second Columbus football team to win a state championship, the first football team in Columbus to win it outright, and the first football team in Columbus to do so undefeated (15-0).

NerdaCon

NerdaCon was a multi-genre fan convention (first seen as a "gaming, popular arts, and crafts convention") held annually since 2007 at Columbus State University by the school's Campus Nerds group, a campus organization that describes itself as "an organization that embraces all special interests and gives its members a community of like minded individuals". Each year, the con was titled "NerdaCon vX", where "X" is the number of the con (The first was "v1", the second was "v2", etc.). As it was a multi-genre convention, it had no general focus other than that of the Nerds, in that the panels, guests, and dealers each added a focus toward anime, manga, science fiction, gaming, comic books, zombie apocalypse, or a combination of these or other generally nerdy or geeky things to add to the atmosphere. NerdaCon was a free event to the general public until NerdaCon v9, in which it switched to a paid admission system in order to support its move from Columbus State University to the Columbus Convention and Trade Center in 2015, where it had been for NerdaCon v10 and v11. NerdaCon helped support organizations such as Children's Miracle Network and the Hero Initiative through donations. By tradition, the convention was held on a Friday and Saturday in November, from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM on the Friday, and 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM on the Saturday. However, since NerdaCon v6 was held on November 11, 2011 (11/11/11), each day was extended by 11 minutes, making it end at 11:11 PM.
