Hamilton Townhouse

Hamilton (Scots: Hamiltoun; Scottish Gaelic: Baile Hamaltan [ˈpalə ˈhaməl̪ˠt̪ʰan]) is a large town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It serves as the main administrative centre of the South Lanarkshire council area. It sits 10 miles (16 km) south-east of Glasgow, 37 miles (60 km) south-west of Edinburgh and 74 miles (120 km) north of Carlisle. It is situated on the south bank of the River Clyde at its confluence with the Avon Water. Hamilton is the county town of the historic county of Lanarkshire and is the location of the headquarters of the modern local authority of South Lanarkshire. The town itself has a population of around 55,000, which makes it the 8th largest settlement in Scotland. It forms a large urban area with nearby towns of Blantyre, Motherwell, Larkhall and Wishaw.

The Battle of Hieton was fought on the 1 December 1650 between a force of Scottish Remonstrants under Colonel Gilbert Ker and 1,000 English commanded by Major-general John Lambert. The site of the battle was by the Cadzow Burn, near the present day town centre of Hamilton, Scotland. The Scots attacked, surprising the English, but were beaten back and destroyed as a fighting force. The battle was part of the Anglo-Scottish war of 1650–1652.

Hamilton Old Parish Church is a Church of Scotland parish church serving part of the Burgh of Hamilton in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is notable for its Georgian architecture. It was built in 1734, replacing the parish's 15th-century Collegiate Church, which was located at another site, close to the mausoleum in Strathclyde Park. The church is an unusual, largely circular design. It is the only church building to have been designed by the architect William Adam.The current minister is the Reverend Ross Blackman BSc MBA BD(Honours), who was Ordained and Inducted on 19 November 2015. Mr Blackman studied at Highland Theological College and University of Glasgow. The previous ministers include: Rev John Thomson (2001-2014), and Rev Dr Hugh Wyllie, who was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1992. Dr Wyllie is one of three ministers of Hamilton Old to have served as Moderator of the General Assembly since the end of the Second World War, the others being Matthew Stewart in 1947 and John Fraser in 1958. Until 1960 this was a collegiate charge with two ministers. After this date John McKechnie, who had been minister of the second charge, became minister of the united charge. There were also two buildings - the Old Church and Auchingramont Church. Auchingramont Church was closed during the ministry of Douglas Macnaughton, who succeeded John McKechnie.

The Low Parks Museum is located in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland and traces the local history of South Lanarkshire through numerous exhibits on provincial industries and events of local historical importance.

Hamilton Bus Station is a bus station that serves Hamilton, a large town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Hamilton Central railway station serves Hamilton, South Lanarkshire in Scotland, lying on the Argyle Line. It is situated in the town centre, adjacent to the Hamilton bus station, as well as the Regent Shopping Centre, Hamilton's main shopping location. In March 2007, SPT announced a redevelopment of the bus and railway stations into a combined interchange, which was completed in winter 2012.

Hamilton railway station was one of several railway stations to serve the town of Hamilton, Scotland. It was opened on 1 April 1878 by the Glasgow, Bothwell, Hamilton and Coatbridge Railway. It was operated by the North British Railway, which under the Railways Act 1921 became part of the London and North Eastern Railway. The station was temporarily closed from 1 January 1917, reopening on 2 June 1919.On 1 January 1948, the Transport Act 1947 took effect, and all main line railways in Britain were nationalized and became part of British Railways. British Railways closed the station, and others on the line for good on 15 September 1952. Almost no trace of the station's existence remains, however, there is a bridge on Union Street which the line passed under, located near the site of the old station. Hamilton today is served by three stations on the Argyle Line. Services are provided by ScotRail.

Hamilton Palace was a country house in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The former seat of the Dukes of Hamilton, it dated from the 14th century and was subsequently much enlarged in the 17th and 19th centuries. Widely acknowledged as having been one of the grandest houses in the British Isles, the palace was situated at the centre of the extensive Low Parks (now Strathclyde Country Park), with the Great Avenue, a north–south tree-lined avenue over three miles (five kilometres) in length, as its axis. The Low Parks also contained the Hamilton Mausoleum designed by David Hamilton and the 11th-century Netherton Cross, while the High Parks (now Chatelherault Country Park) contain Chatelherault Hunting Lodge designed by William Adam. Hamilton Palace was demolished between 1921 and 1926 after coal works beneath the house were discovered to threaten its structural integrity.

Hamilton Grammar School is a secondary school serving Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Its predecessors can trace their history back to 1452. With the introduction of comprehensive schools and the abolition of selective schools such as Hamilton Academy in the early-1970s, Hamilton Grammar School was formed as a new school, using the buildings of the former Hamilton Academy and the nearby St. John's Grammar School.The current Hamilton Grammar building was built in 1913 as the Hamilton Academy building. The building underwent an £8,000,000 improvement in 1995, when the original building was retained and fully renovated, with an additional building extension attached to the rear. The new building contains science and technical facilities. In 2004, a communication development unit was added to the school. A new Physical Education centre was built at the rear of the school. Building work started in June 2008 and was completed for August 2009. This replaced the old Physical Education department which was at the back of St John's Primary School. The current head teacher is Graeme Sives who joined the school on 3 May 2016, replacing the retired Head Teacher, Colin Stewart.Notable former pupils include The Reverend Scott J Brown, formerly Chaplain of the Fleet, Royal Navy who was a pupil from 1980 to 1985 and Scottish international footballer Davie Cooper.

Hamilton Mausoleum is a mausoleum located in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It was the resting place of the family of the Dukes of Hamilton. Built in the grounds of the now-demolished Hamilton Palace, its high stone used to hold the record for the longest echo within any man-made structure in the world, taking 15 seconds for the sound of a slammed door to fade. In 2014 the record was broken at the Inchindown oil storage tanks in the Scottish Highlands.

Hamilton College is a co-educational Christian independent school located in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It provides education from Nursery age (2 years and up) through the full 7 years of primary education and 6 years of secondary school (up to 18 years old). The Nursery, Junior and Senior Schools pupils are on the same campus and in the same building. The Headteacher is Richard Charman.Although it is a Christian school, there is no church affiliation, and the school has pupils from other cultural backgrounds.
