Salt Creek is a 43.4-mile-long (69.8 km) stream in northeastern Illinois. It is an important tributary of the Des Plaines River, part of the Illinois River and ultimately the Mississippi River watersheds. It rises in northwest Cook County at Wilke Marsh in Palatine and flows in a meandering course generally southward through DuPage County, returning to central Cook County and emptying into the Des Plaines River in Riverside, Illinois. Most of the creek's watershed is urbanized, densely populated and flood-prone. Flood control dams were constructed along the creek in 1978 within the Ned Brown Forest Preserve near Elk Grove Village, Illinois, creating the 590-acre (2.4 km2) Busse Lake. A diversion tunnel was constructed approximately 1.6 miles (2.6 km) north of the confluence with the Des Plaines River, at a point where the two streams are separated by only 1,600 feet (490 m). Tributary streams include Addison Creek. The Graue Mill historic gristmill stands on the bank of the creek in Oak Brook. It was originally known to European settlers as the Little Des Plaines River but was given the name Salt Creek in the mid-nineteenth century after a large wagonload of salt spilled in the waterway. Some of the species of fish in the creek include carp, smallmouth bass, northern pike, bluegill/sunfish minnow/shad, and bullhead catfish.

Hollywood is one of three stations on Metra's BNSF Line in Brookfield, Illinois. The station is 11.7 miles (18.8 km) from Union Station, the east end of the line. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Hollywood is in zone C. As of 2018, Hollywood is the 181st busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 120 weekday boardings. An unstaffed shelter is on the north side of the three tracks. Hollywood station is the main stop for the Brookfield Zoo. It was originally built in 1893 when Samuel Eberly Gross, a Chicago lawyer, began selling building lots platted from farms and woodlands he had acquired along both sides of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad line. He did the same thing with the current Brookfield station in 1889, and the former West Grossdale station in 1895. All three developments built by Gross voted to be incorporated into the Village of Grossdale. After Gross divorced his first wife, married a teenager, filed for bankruptcy and moved to Michigan, the residents voted to change the name of the village to Brookfield as well as two of the stations in 1905. Hollywood station, however, kept its original name.

Hofmann Tower is the name of a tower in Lyons, Illinois. It was built in 1908 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 22, 1978. Hofmann Tower is featured prominently in two books written by Rose Marie Benedetti and Virginia C. Bulat entitled Lyons: A history of a village and area important for 300 years (1959) and Portage, pioneers, and pubs: A history of Lyons, Illinois (1963).George Hofmann, Jr., a local brewer built a dam on the Des Plaines River to generate electricity. He also built the adjacent tower as part of a park that attracted visitors to picnic and ride boats.In the 1970s, Rose Marie Benedetti and Maureen S. Kiener worked closely with the preservation efforts of the Village of Lyons Historical Commission to have Hofmann Tower designated a village and state landmark and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Riverside Brookfield High School (RBHS) is a secondary school located directly between Riverside, Illinois, and Brookfield, Illinois, which educates grades 9-12. It serves the towns of Riverside, North Riverside, Broadview, and parts of LaGrange Park and Brookfield. Its campus is adjacent to Brookfield Zoo. The mascot of Riverside Brookfield (RB) is Rouser the Bulldog. Riverside Brookfield Township High School District 208 recently passed a $58 million referendum, resulting in renovations to the school building, including a new swimming pool, athletics stadium, and classrooms completed in the spring of 2010.

Lyons is a village in Lyons Township, Cook County, Illinois, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 10,817. The Chicago Portage National Historic Site is located in Lyons.

In Metra's zone-based fare system, Riverside is in zone C. As of 2018, Riverside is the 100th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 493 weekday boardings. A staffed station building is on the south side of the three tracks. The station was built about 1901 by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad according to a design by the company's general architect, Walter Theodore Krausch.

The Arcade Building is a historic building at 1 Riverside Road in Riverside, Illinois. The building was built in 1871 as Riverside's first commercial building; its first floor housed storefronts, while its upper floors were used as residential and office space. Riverside was developed as a planned community in the late 1860s, and the Arcade Building was part of its original plan; it both provided basic services to the village's early residents and served as a focal point of its downtown. Architect Frederick C. Withers designed the Victorian Gothic building, which features brick arches over its windows, four dormers projecting from the roof, and towers atop the entrance and at each corner. By grouping the village's shops in a single planned building, the Arcade Building was one of the earliest precursors to the concept of a shopping center.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 8, 2016.

American College of Zoological Medicine was established in 1983 as an international specialty organization of veterinarians with special expertise in zoological medicine. The ACZM was established to encourage medical research that benefits wild animals. Also it was established to advance competency and scientific progress in zoological medicine, integrate the principles of ecology, conservation, and veterinary medicine as it applies to wild animals within natural and artificial environments. It sets standards for post-doctoral training and experience and to certify veterinarians as specialists in zoological medicine through comprehensive examination. ACZM became recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Board of Veterinary Specialists, and American Association of Zoo Veterinarians.The organization hands out the Murray E. Fowler Lifetime Achievement Award. Past recipients have included Dr. Kay Mehren of the Toronto Zoo.

Brookfield Zoo, also known as the Chicago Zoological Park, is a zoo located in the Chicago suburb of Brookfield, Illinois. It houses around 450 species of animals in an area of 216 acres (87 ha). It opened on July 1, 1934, and quickly gained international recognition for using moats and ditches instead of cages to separate animals from visitors and from other animals. The zoo was also the first in America to exhibit giant pandas, one of which (Su Lin) has been taxidermied and put on display in Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History. In 1960, Brookfield Zoo built the nation's first fully indoor dolphin exhibit, and in the 1980s, the zoo introduced Tropic World, the first fully indoor rainforest simulation and the then-largest indoor zoo exhibit in the world. The Brookfield Zoo is owned by the Cook County Forest Preserve District and managed by the Chicago Zoological Society. The society sponsors numerous research and conservation efforts globally.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD), originally known as the Sanitary District of Chicago, is a special-purpose district chartered to operate in Cook County, Illinois since 1889. Although its name may imply otherwise, it is not a part of the City of Chicago's local government but is created by Illinois state government with an elected Board of Commissioners. The MWRD's main purposes are the reclamation and treatment of wastewater and flood water abatement in Cook County to protect the health and safety of citizens and of area waterways. In 1900, the District notably reversed the flow of the Chicago River, and it is currently involved in the large multi-decade construction of the "Deep Tunnel", Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP).
