Zion Nuclear Power Station was the third dual-reactor nuclear power plant in the Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) network and served Chicago and the northern quarter of Illinois. The plant was built in 1973, and the first unit started producing power in December 1973. The second unit came online in September 1974. This power generating station is located on 257 acres (104 ha) of Lake Michigan shoreline, in the city of Zion, Lake County, Illinois. It is approximately 40 direct-line miles north of Chicago, Illinois and 42 miles (68 km) south of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The reactors were commissioned in respectively 1973 and 1974, and decommissioned between 1998 and 2020. The power plant was the tallest structure in Lake County.

Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park, part of the Illinois state park system, is located along Lake Michigan in Winthrop Harbor, Zion, Beach Park and unincorporated Benton Township in northeast Illinois. Together with lands to the north, including Chiwaukee Prairie, it forms the Chiwaukee Prairie Illinois Beach Lake Plain, an internationally recognized wet-land of importance under the Ramsar Convention. The park is broken into two units that encompass an area of 4,160 acres (1,683 ha) and contains over six miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. In 2010, it was renamed for former state senator Adeline Geo-Karis. Recreational activities at the park include boating, swimming, hiking, bicycling, camping, bird watching, and picnicking. Known primarily for the beach, the park also includes dune areas, wetlands, prairie, and black oak savanna. The area at the far southern end of the park is a designated nature preserve, which was named a National Natural Landmark in 1980.

Zion is a small commuter railroad station on Metra's Union Pacific North Line located in Zion, Illinois. It is located on 2501 South Eden Road, near the intersection with Shiloh Boulevard. It is 42.1 miles (67.8 km) away from Ogilvie Transportation Center—the inbound terminus of the Union Pacific North Line, and also serves commuters who travel north to Kenosha, Wisconsin. Parking is available on both sides of the tracks, and one of the parking lots is along South Eden Road at Shiloh Boulevard. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Zion is in zone I. As of 2018, Zion is the 185th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 110 weekday boardings.The structure at Zion Station is an unmanned decorative shelter. In the building are some seats and also some shelves for book exchange. It also serves as a stop for passengers who visit Illinois Beach State Park. As of April 25, 2022, Zion is served by twelve trains (six in each direction) on weekdays, by twelve trains (five inbound, seven outbound) on Saturdays, and by six trains (three in each direction) on Sundays and holidays. Many trains on the Union Pacific North Line do not serve Zion. Most trains terminate at Waukegan; Zion is mostly served during peak hours only, with a few weekend trains. This limited rail service makes this station an impractical method of reaching Chicago during off-peak hours. Passengers can take the 571 Pace bus which goes to Waukegan.

Camp Logan, Illinois was an Illinois National Guard base and rifle range from 1892 to the early 1970s. At one time the Camp was 200 acres (0.81 km2). Several buildings survive today as they are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Camp Logan was named after General John Alexander Logan.The Camp Logan site is now part of the Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park.

The Zion Chapter House is a historic building located at 2715 Emmaus Avenue in Zion, Illinois. The building was constructed between 1909 and 1910 as a meetinghouse for Zion's chapter of the American Woman's League. The American Woman's League was a political and social organization founded by magazine publisher Edward Gardner Lewis in 1908. The organization was created to promote feminist causes, particularly the women's suffrage movement; Lewis also intended for the organization to promote and sell his women's magazines. Lewis commissioned the St. Louis architectural firm of Helfensteller, Hirsch & Watson to design five classes of buildings which the League would use as meetinghouses. The Zion Chapter House is an example of a Class II building, which was designed for clubs with 60 to 100 members. The building was designed in the Prairie School style and cost $2,500. After the club disbanded, the building was converted to a private home.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 28, 1980. It is one of nine American Woman's League chapter houses on the National Register in Illinois.

On February 8, 2000, a Zlin 242L light aircraft piloted by Chicago radio personality Bob Collins was involved in a mid-air collision with a Cessna 172P over Zion, Illinois, while both aircraft were on approach to land at the nearby Waukegan National Airport. The Zlin dived and crashed through the roof of a five-story medical building. The Cessna spiraled down and crashed onto a residential street three blocks away. All three people on board both aircraft were killed and five people on the ground were injured.The crash was instrumental in effecting changes at Waukegan National Airport, and on March 24, 2000, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that the control tower would receive a Terminal Automated Radar Display and Information System.

Shiloh House is a historic house at 1300 Shiloh Boulevard in Zion, Illinois. John Alexander Dowie, the founder of Zion, built the house in 1902–03; he lived there until his death in 1907. Architect Paul Burkhardt of Chicago, who worked on many of Zion's early buildings, designed the home. Burkhardt's design incorporated the Queen Anne and Swiss chalet styles. After Dowie's death, the house passed through several owners, including the Great Lakes Bible Institute; the school used the house for twelve years before moving to Missouri in 1945. The Zion Historical Society bought the house and renovated it for a new headquarters in 1967.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 12, 1977.

Zion Elementary School District 6 is an Illinois school district serving Zion, Lake County. The school district governs seven schools. Lakeview School is responsible for prekindergarten children, housing also the district's administrative offices. Beulah Park Elementary School, East Elementary School, Elmwood Elementary School, Shiloh Park Elementary School and West Elementary School serve students between kindergarten and sixth grade. Zion Elementary School District 6's sole middle school, Zion Central Middle School, serves the seventh and eighth grades.

North Point Marina State Recreation Area is an Illinois state park on 297 acres (120 ha) in Lake County, Illinois, United States. It has 1,500 slips for the mooring of boats.

Winthrop Harbor is a station on Metra's Union Pacific North Line located in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois. It is located on 7th Street, one block east of Ravine Drive. Winthrop Harbor is 44.5 miles (71.6 km) away from Ogilvie Transportation Center, the inbound terminus of the Union Pacific North Line. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Winthrop Harbor is in zone I. As of 2018, Winthrop Harbor is the 206th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 59 weekday boardings.Winthrop Harbor is located at grade level and has two side platforms that serve two tracks. It is the northernmost Metra station in the State of Illinois. A parking lot is situated on the west side of the station. As of April 25, 2022, Winthrop Harbor is served by twelve trains (six in each direction) on weekdays, by twelve trains (five inbound, seven outbound) on Saturdays, and by six trains (three in each direction) on Sundays.

Zion is a city in Lake County, Illinois, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 24,655.

Bowen Park is a recreational area in Waukegan, Illinois, along Sheridan Road. It includes an old-growth forest and a ravine. The 60.07-acre (24.31 ha) park was laid out as a residential property in 1843. It was the home of John Charles Haines, a prominent Illinois politician, from 1857 to 1896. In 1911, the Hull House Association renamed it the Joseph T. Bowen Country Club and began using the property as a summer retreat. The land was purchased by the Waukegan Park District in 1963.
