Lawson Park is a remote English Lake District hillfarm, leased by Grizedale Arts (a contemporary art commissioner) from the Forestry Commission. It is situated opposite the village of Coniston overlooking Coniston Water. A major refurbishment by architects Sutherland Hussey in 2007/8/9 has seen the farm transformed into a residency and office base for Grizedale Arts. It now offers live/work residencies to contemporary artists and hosts events and conferences periodically. Grizedale Arts director Adam Sutherland has furnished the building with a notable collection of works by British designers and manufacturers from 1820 to the present day. Circa 15 acres (61,000 m2) of land around Lawson Park is being returned to productive use as a smallholding, and the gardens, designed by artist & film-maker Karen Guthrie, are open to the public in summer under the National Garden Scheme.

Grizedale Forest is a 24.47 km2 area of woodland in the Lake District of North West England, located to the east of Coniston Water and to the south of Hawkshead. It is made up of a number of hills, small tarns and the settlements of Grizedale and Satterthwaite. It is owned and managed by Forestry England and is a popular tourist destination with waymarked footpaths, mountain biking, an aerial assault course, a 16-bed hostel, and a visitor centre with a children's playground, education centre, café and shop. The car-parking of Grizedale Forest Visitors Centre is situated on the site of the former Grizedale Hall where its remains can be still seen. In past years, several stages on the WRC RAC Rally were held on tracks through Grizedale Forest every winter. The forest continues to be used for two annual rallies: the Malcolm Wilson Rally and the Grizedale Stages Rally, based in Coniston.

Grizedale Hall was a large country house at Grizedale, Hawkshead, in the Lake District in Cumbria, England. After two earlier Grizedale Halls had preceded, it was built anew in 1905 in the style of Gothic Revival architecture. During World War II it became No 1 Prisoner-of-war camp to hold German officers and was finally pulled down in 1957.

Grizedale is a hamlet in the Lake District of North West England, in the middle of the Grizedale Forest, located north of Satterthwaite and south of Hawkshead. It is part of the civil parish of Satterthwaite.Attractions include extensive mountain bike trails and one of the Go Ape company's tree-top adventure courses. The forest is still notable for its sculptures. It used to be the home of Grizedale Arts, a contemporary arts residency and commissioning agency. Grizedale is the location of the former Grizedale Hall – a forty-room mansion that was demolished in 1957. Before and after World War II, it was owned by the Forestry Commission. During the war, it was commandeered by the War Office and became officially known as No 1 POW Camp (Officers) Grizedale Hall, to hold German officer prisoners of war. As many of these were rescued survivors from sunken U-boats, it also became known as the "U-Boat Hotel". The fighter pilot Franz von Werra was initially held there, and also made one of the many escape attempts for which he is known. Another well-known prisoner was Otto Kretschmer, Germany's most successful U-boat captain until his capture. An interactive woodland nature trail themed around the children's book Zog was installed at Grizedale in 2019.

Brantwood is a historic house museum in Cumbria, England, overlooking Coniston Water. It has been the home of a number of prominent people. The house and grounds are administered by a charitable trust, the house being a museum dedicated to John Ruskin, one of its final owners. Brantwood is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and buildings in the grounds are also listed.

Satterthwaite is a small village (and civil parish) with around 50 dwellings situated in Grizedale, a valley in the Lake District, England, about four miles south of Hawkshead. It has a church, All Saints', and a Parish Room. The civil parish of Satterthwaite has its own community website. In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 257, decreasing at the 2011 census to 215. The population peaked in 1881 at 450 and has since gradually declined to the current day. In the 10 years to 1891 the population fell to 410 falling further to 325 in 1931. The population decline is probably due to rural urban migration.In the 1870s Satterthwaite was described as "a village and a township-chapelry in Hawkshead parish, Lancashire."

Coniston Water in the English county of Cumbria is the third-largest lake in the Lake District by volume (after Windermere and Ullswater), and the fifth-largest by area. It is five miles long by half a mile wide (8 km by 800 m), has a maximum depth of 184 feet (56 m), and covers an area of 1.89 square miles (4.9 km2). The lake has an elevation of 143 feet (44 m) above sea level. It drains to the sea via the River Crake.

Top o'Selside is a hill in the Lake District in Cumbria, England. At 335 metres (1,099 ft), it is the highest point of the group of hills situated between Coniston Water and Windermere. This group also includes the Wainwright of Black Fell and the summits of Black Brows and Rusland Heights. Top o'Selside lies not in the centre of this region, but in the south-western corner, just outside the forestry plantations of Grizedale Forest and only two-thirds of a mile from the eastern shore of Coniston Water. This large separation from any higher ground gives it enough relative height to make it a Marilyn.

Yewdale Beck is a river in Lake District, Cumbria, England. The Yewdale Beck arises from the confluence of Henfoot Beck and Swallow Scar Beck, as well as other unnamed tributaries east of Wetherlam. The Yewdale Beck first flows in an easterly direction before it turns south-west of the settlement of Lower Tilberthwaite, which it changes again at the northern edge of the town of Coniston to the southeast. It then flows into the Coniston Water. The Yewdale Beck is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The watercourse is one of the best places for studying stratigraphy and paleogeography of the early Silurian in Great Britain.

The steam yacht Gondola is a rebuilt Victorian, screw-propelled, steam-powered passenger vessel on Coniston Water, England. Originally launched in 1859, she was built for the steamer service carrying passengers from the Furness Railway and from the Coniston Railway. She was in commercial service until 1936 when she was retired, being converted to a houseboat in 1946. In 1979, by now derelict, she was given a new hull, engine, boiler and most of the superstructure. She is back in service as a passenger boat, still powered by steam and now operated by the National Trust. Gondola is one of the inspirations for Captain Flint's houseboat in Arthur Ransome's book Swallows and Amazons. In Coniston's Ruskin Museum there is a black and white post card of Gondola that Ransome sent to his illustrator, with changes to the outline in ink to show how he wanted the houseboat to look.

Satterthwaite & Rusland School was a Church of England Primary school near Force Forge in the Rusland Valley. The school was established in 1840 for children aged 4 to 11, and closed in 2006 with just 9 pupils. The site has since been converted into affordable housing.The school was renowned for its rural setting with large grounds for children to play in, and for providing a wide range of extra-curricular activities including: football, hockey, rounders, athletics, swimming, roller-blading and cricket. The school also provided an unusually wide range of opportunities including: canoeing, climbing, gorge walking, fell walking, orienteering and problem solving activities.

Coniston Hall is a former house on the west bank of Coniston Water in the English Lake District. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.The house dates from the late 16th century, or possibly earlier. It is built in stone rubble with a slate roof. Part of it is now ruined, part is used as a farmhouse, and another part is used by a sailing club.The hall is owned by the National Trust, but is not open to the public. A privy about 13 metres (43 ft) to the south of the hall is listed at Grade II.
