Eindhoven

The Eindhovensch Kanaal (or Eindhovens Kanaal; Engl: Eindhoven Canal) is a canal in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It connects the center of Eindhoven with the Zuid-Willemsvaart. It was dug in the period 1843-1846, commissioned by the town of Eindhoven. The canal is 13.9 kilometers long and runs by a number of Eindhoven industrial areas and the towns of Geldrop, Mierlo and Helmond. The canal runs over the Kleine Dommel and the Goorloop, which are led under the canal by ducts. The canal has not been in use for commercial shipping since 1971. However, the canal sees much recreational use; it is used for sport fishing, there is a bicycle path and a number of local rowing associations use it for practice. The spelling Eindhovensch Kanaal is old-fashioned and the common spelling in Dutch is Eindhovens Kanaal nowadays. However, Eindhovensch Kanaal is still the official spelling.

The Metropoolregio Eindhoven (MRE; English: Eindhoven Metropolitan Region), until 1 January 2014 the Samenwerkingsverband Regio Eindhoven (SRE; English: Cooperative union for the Region of Eindhoven) is a regional governmental agency for the city region of Eindhoven, Netherlands. The MRE comprises 21 municipalities in the Eindhoven agglomeration, with a total area of 1,457.81 square kilometers. The region has nearly three quarters of a million inhabitants and some 35.000 companies (employing over 330.000 people).

The Van Abbemuseum (Dutch pronunciation: [vɑn ˈɑbəmyˌzeːjɵm]) is a museum of modern and contemporary art in central Eindhoven, Netherlands, on the east bank of the Dommel River. Established in 1936, the museum is named after its founder, Henri van Abbe, who loved modern art and wanted to enjoy it in Eindhoven. As of 2010, the collection of the museum housed more than 2700 works of art, of which about 1000 were on paper, 700 were paintings, and 1000 were sculptures, installations and video works. The museum has an area of 9,825 m2 and holds one of the largest collections of paintings in the world by El Lissitzky. It also has works by Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky.

The Vesteda tower is located in Eindhoven and was finished in 2006. At 90 metres (300 ft) tall and 28 floors it is the fourth highest building in Eindhoven. It bears a resemblance to the Flatiron Building in Manhattan, New York City. In 2007 it was awarded the BNA Building of the Year plaque (nl), by the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects (nl).

Muziekgebouw Frits Philips is a concert hall in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The venue is named after Frits Philips and was opened in 1992.

The Inkijkmuseum (lit. trans. Look-in museum) is an originally themed "micro museum" in the Dutch city of Eindhoven. It is located in the washhouse of the former linen factory Van den Briel & Verster on the Dommelstraat. The original factory was shut down in 1936, after which the washhouse was abandoned for a time. It was then converted into a bicycle parking area for the city police, then into youth center Effenaar and cultural center Cultureel Centrum 2B. It was also in use as private housing at that time. The ground floor of the building has been in use as the Inkijkmuseum since March 21, 2004. The idea of the "look-in" museum is to host small exhibits which are viewed by the public from outside the building, by looking in through the windows. Such a micro-exhibit might consists of works of art, musical instruments, cultural anthropological artifacts or objects linked to a historical event. The museum underwent a short renovation in 2008, reopening on October 17.

The Effenaar is a music venue in the centre of Eindhoven, the Netherlands. It was squatted in 1971 and has grown into one of the largest pop venues in the country, hosting rock, pop and techno events. The current Effenaar consists of two music halls after being renovated between 2002 and 2005. The large hall has an audience capacity of 1300, is intended for use by larger bands and acts and is considerably larger than the original hall. The small hall has a capacity of 400 (smaller than the old Effenaar) and is used for smaller and/or regional bands. The old Effenaar venue hosted many large (national and international) acts throughout its existence, including Bauhaus, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Sex Pistols. In 2011, the venue celebrated its 40th anniversary with concerts, a book and an exhibition.

The Hotel 't Silveren Seepaerd fire took place in the night of 28 September 1971 in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

The Tongelreep is a small tributary of the Dommel that flows through Belgium and the Netherlands. It begins in Belgium near Neerpelt (where the stream is called the Warmbeek) and runs into the Dommel in Eindhoven by way of Valkenswaard and Aalst. The stream runs near the Achel Abbey, the Leenderbos, the Valkenhorst estates and the Genneper Parken park area. The Tongelreep has always remained a relatively naturally flowing, clear river with natural interaction between water and landscape; this despite the fact that man has tried to alter the river bed since the Middle Ages, the stretch to the west of the current Leenderbos was canaled in 1890 in order to create a series of fishing ponds and the stretch to the south of that was canaled by the Achel Abbey monks before that. The natural character of the southern Tongelreep has been returning since 1989, when the Achel Abbey agricultural activities were ceased and the lands were sold to environmental groups, who are restoring the natural flow of the river. The grassy lands of the Warmbeek valleys are also being restored.

Eindhoven Centraal railway station is the main railway station in Eindhoven in North Brabant, Netherlands. It is the busiest station outside the Randstad area and an important station in the southern part of The Netherlands.

The 18 September Square (Dutch: 18 Septemberplein) is a square in the Dutch city of Eindhoven. It is the connection between Eindhoven Centraal railway station and the city's shopping center.

The Eindhoven Museum is an archaeological open-air museum in Eindhoven, Netherlands, focusing on the Iron Age and Middle Ages in the province of North Brabant. The museum is situated in the Genneper Parken area at the south side of the city. It focuses on the daily lives and routines of people in the time periods mentioned, through demonstrations and recreations of buildings, practices and routines. For example, there are demonstrations of cooking on open fire, of games played in the Middle Ages and groups of school children are allowed to spend the night in the stables. The museum has several distinct target audiences. Primary among these are school children, who comprise most of the visitors on weekdays. In the weekends and during holiday season the museum focuses on regular tourists. The museum features a lot of living history exhibits as well as semi-historical reenactments. During holiday seasons extra activities are staged for children. The museum also arranges historically themed corporate and family outings outside of opening hours. Some 60.000 people visited the museum in 2005.
