The Battle of the House in the Horseshoe was a minor engagement during the American Revolution between loyalist militia under the command of David Fanning and patriot militia under the command of Phillip Alston, the owner of the House in the Horseshoe. The battle, which took place on either July 29 or August 5, 1781 (with July 29 being the most accepted date), ended in a victory for the loyalists. The surrender terms between the combatants were negotiated by Alston's wife on behalf of the patriots, and by Fanning for the loyalists.

"River Daniel" Blue House, also known as Highlanders Farm, is a historic home located near Carthage, Moore County, North Carolina. It was built about 1795, and is a two-story, gable-roof log house sheathed in weatherboard. The house has two gable-end single, stepped-shoulder brick chimneys. Also on the property are the contributing "old kitchen," one-room log structure, and rail depot.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Pinckney Academy is an alternative Middle School and High School in Carthage, North Carolina. It is a part of the Moore County public schools system. Previously, the school was different from the other traditional schools in the county. Up until the 2009–2010 school year, it offered high school students only to seek credit hours under independent study. This meant that a student could get credit for a course as soon as he/she is finished with the two packets per course the instructor provides for the student. In addition, there is no lecture for the student as he or she is self-teaching the subject on their own. Inside the packet has assignments that the student would have to complete by reading the textbook first then answer the questions from the assignment. A grade below 70 would not acceptable where the student would have to re-do the assignment until a satisfactory grade is made. This is different from the traditional school where a course lasts a semester or a year long which would include a teacher doing a lecture for the course. Since the 2009–2010 school year, the curriculum has gone back to the traditional way as the other schools are in the county.

Carthage Historic District is a national historic district located at Carthage, Moore County, North Carolina. The district encompasses 85 contributing buildings, 1 contributing site, 5 contributing structures, and 1 contributing object in a predominantly residential section of Carthage. It was developed between the 1850s and 1940 and includes notable examples of Queen Anne, Greek Revival, and Colonial Revival style architecture. Notable buildings include the Carthage Methodist Church (1898-1900), (former) Carthage Community House (1939-1940) built by the National Youth Administration, the "Chub" Seawell House, Edgehill, Charles Sinclair House, Dr. John Shaw House, Humber-Spencer House, Adams-Bryan House, Jenkins House, Harley-Muse House (1879), George Calvin Graves House (1882, 1897), W. T. Jones House (1897), the J. F. Cole House (1899), the Methodist Parsonage (1922), and Presbyterian Manse.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

The Carthage nursing home shooting was a mass shooting that occurred on March 29, 2009, when a gunman opened fire at Pinelake Health and Rehabilitation, a 120-bed nursing home in Carthage, North Carolina. The shooter, 45-year-old Robert Kenneth Stewart, killed eight people, including a nurse at the home, and wounded a ninth. He was shot and apprehended by the responding police officer, who was also wounded by gunfire. It was the worst mass shooting in North Carolina's history.Stewart was said to have intended to kill his estranged wife, a nurse at the nursing home, who had hidden and survived the shooting unharmed. Initially charged with first-degree murder, Stewart was tried in 2011 and convicted on eight counts of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 179 years, four months, and 20 days.

Alexander Kelly House, also known as the John B. Kelly House, is a historic plantation house located near Carthage, Moore County, North Carolina. It was built in 1842, and is a two-story, five-bay, double pile, Federal / Greek Revival style frame dwelling. The house rests on tapered, hewn brownstone piers and has a deep hip roof. The front facade features a three-bay pedimented porch.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

It was built in 1922–1923, and is a three-story, rectangular, limestone-faced building in the Renaissance Revival style. It has a rusticated base pierced by arched paired windows, upper floor windows divided by pilasters, and a series of Ionic order half columns in the slightly recessed central section.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
