Nowe Skalmierzyce

Nowe Skalmierzyce railway station is a railway station in Nowe Skalmierzyce, Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland, located in the eastern part of the city. The station is located on the Łódź–Forst (Lausitz) railway. The train services are operated by Przewozy Regionalne.

Boczków (German 1939-1945 Maternhof) [ˈbɔt͡ʂkuf] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Nowe Skalmierzyce, within Ostrów Wielkopolski County, Greater Poland Voivodeship, in west-central Poland. It lies approximately 2 kilometres (1 mi) north of Skalmierzyce, 23 km (14 mi) north-east of Ostrów Wielkopolski, and 105 km (65 mi) south-east of the regional capital Poznań. The village dates back to the Late Middle Ages. It was part of the Kingdom of Poland until the late-18th century Partitions of Poland, when it was annexed by Prussia. On December 27, 1918, Jan Mertka was killed in Boczków as the first fallen participant of the Greater Poland Uprising, aimed at reuniting the region with the just re-established Polish state. In response, the Polish insurgents captured the village, which became the first fully liberated village of the region during the uprising. There is a monument dedicated to Jan Mertka in Boczków. He is buried in Ostrów Wielkopolski.

Skalmierzyce [skalmjɛˈʐɨt͡sɛ] is an urbanized village in Ostrów Wielkopolski County, Greater Poland Voivodeship, in west-central Poland. It lies approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of Ostrów Wielkopolski and 106 km (66 mi) south-east of the regional capital Poznań. It adjoins the town of Nowe Skalmierzyce. Skalmierzyce has a population of around 4,000. It is the administrative seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Nowe Skalmierzyce. It is the only village in Poland to be the seat of a gmina containing a town (until 2009 it shared that status with Święta Katarzyna, Lower Silesian Voivodeship). In local speech it is often called Stare Skalmierzyce ("Old Skalmierzyce"), to distinguish it from Nowe Skalmierzyce ("New Skalmierzyce"). It was originally called Scarbimirzyce, and is first mentioned in 1343. In 1815 it found itself close to the border between Prussia and Russian-controlled Congress Poland; a customs post was set up close by, which later developed into Nowe Skalmierzyce. Buildings of interest include St. Catherine's church, built 1791–1792 and extended in 1873.

In 1999 the administrative seat of the gmina was moved from the town of Nowe Skalmierzyce to the adjoining locality of Skalmierzyce, which is officially classed as a village. (This is now the only urban-rural gmina in Poland to have its seat outside the town; until 2009 it shared that status with Gmina Święta Katarzyna, now Gmina Siechnice.) The gmina covers an area of 125.67 square kilometres (48.5 sq mi), and as of 2006 its total population is 15,169 (out of which the population of Nowe Skalmierzyce is 5,080, and the population of the remainder of the gmina is 10,089). Skalmierzyce lies approximately 22 kilometres (14 mi) east of Ostrów Wielkopolski and 107 km (66 mi) south-east of the regional capital Poznań.
