Skalmierzyce, Greater Poland Voivodeship

Gmina Nowe Skalmierzyce is an urban-rural gmina (administrative district) in Ostrów Wielkopolski County, Greater Poland Voivodeship, in west-central Poland. In 1999 the administrative seat of the gmina was moved from the town of Nowe Skalmierzyce to the adjoining locality of Skalmierzyce, which is officially classed as a village. (This is now the only urban-rural gmina in Poland to have its seat outside the town; until 2009 it shared that status with Gmina Święta Katarzyna, now Gmina Siechnice.) The gmina covers an area of 125.67 square kilometres (48.5 sq mi), and as of 2006 its total population is 15,169 (out of which the population of Nowe Skalmierzyce is 5,080, and the population of the remainder of the gmina is 10,089). Skalmierzyce lies approximately 22 kilometres (14 mi) east of Ostrów Wielkopolski and 107 km (66 mi) south-east of the regional capital Poznań.

Nowe Skalmierzyce railway station is a railway station in Nowe Skalmierzyce, Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland, located in the eastern part of the city. The station is located on the Łódź–Forst (Lausitz) railway. The train services are operated by Przewozy Regionalne.

Nowe Skalmierzyce [ˈnɔvɛ skalmʲɛˈʐɨt͡sɛ] is a town and its surrounding municipality in Ostrów Wielkopolski County, Greater Poland Voivodeship, in central Poland. The town has a population of 5,093 (2006 est.), while the municipality, Gmina Nowe Skalmierzyce, which is a mixed urban-rural gmina that includes the town, has a population of 15,191. The town has a land area of only 1.58 km², which results in a population density of 3,223.4 persons/km², the seventh-highest density of all towns in Poland, and the second-highest density (after Swarzędz) of the urban portion of any Polish urban-rural gmina (gmina miejsko-wiejska). The gmina has a land area of 125.42 km². Nowe Skalmierzyce ("New Skalmierzyce") adjoins the urbanized village of Skalmierzyce, which is in fact the administrative seat of the gmina.

Boczków (German 1939-1945 Maternhof) [ˈbɔt͡ʂkuf] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Nowe Skalmierzyce, within Ostrów Wielkopolski County, Greater Poland Voivodeship, in west-central Poland. It lies approximately 2 kilometres (1 mi) north of Skalmierzyce, 23 km (14 mi) north-east of Ostrów Wielkopolski, and 105 km (65 mi) south-east of the regional capital Poznań. The village dates back to the Late Middle Ages. It was part of the Kingdom of Poland until the late-18th century Partitions of Poland, when it was annexed by Prussia. On December 27, 1918, Jan Mertka was killed in Boczków as the first fallen participant of the Greater Poland Uprising, aimed at reuniting the region with the just re-established Polish state. In response, the Polish insurgents captured the village, which became the first fully liberated village of the region during the uprising. There is a monument dedicated to Jan Mertka in Boczków. He is buried in Ostrów Wielkopolski.

It lies approximately 4 kilometres (2 mi) west of Skalmierzyce, 16 km (10 mi) east of Ostrów Wielkopolski, and 104 km (65 mi) south-east of the regional capital Poznań. The village has an approximate population of 650.
