Athens Township, Harrison County, Ohio

The Silver Spade was a giant power shovel used for strip mining in southeastern Ohio. Manufactured by Bucyrus-Erie, South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the model 1950-B was one of two of this model built, the other being the GEM of Egypt. Its sole function was to remove the earth and rock overburden from the coal seam. Attempts to purchase and preserve the shovel from Consol to make it the centerpiece of a mining museum exhibit for $2.6 million fell short, and the shovel was dismantled in February 2007.

The Franklin College Building No. 5 is located along Main Street, or State Route 9, in New Athens, Ohio. The building houses the Franklin Museum which is dedicated to preserving the building and its primary function. The college building was placed on the National Register on May 8, 1987.

Franklin College (founded 1818) was a college in New Athens, Ohio, founded by abolitionist John Walker (1786-1845), a Presbyterian minister in Pennsylvania and Ohio. The college was called Alma college from 1818 until 1825, when the name was changed to Franklin College. Classes were suspended during the Civil War after most of the student body enlisted for military service, but the college was revived in 1867 with 40 students. The college ceased operation in 1919, and became associated with Muskingum College until 1927. The college building houses the Franklin Museum which showcases the span of the college and its history. Over the course of over 100 years, the college was key in the education of two governors, eight U.S. Senators, and nine U.S. Congressmen and twenty state legislators. The college also graduated Titus Basfield, an African-American student and former slave, as well as several prominent women. While at Franklin College, Basfield became close friends with classmate John Armor Bingham, who later became primary author of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution and the longest-serving chief American diplomat in Japan, 1873–1875.

Cadiz ( KAD-iss) is a village in and the county seat of Harrison County, Ohio, United States, located about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Steubenville. The population was 3,051 at the 2020 census.

The Harrison County Courthouse in Cadiz, Ohio, United States, was constructed during 1893 to 1895 by Joseph W. Yost. The courthouse mirrors others of his design, with large arched windows and a central clock tower domed and topped with a statue of Justice. The porches to the entrances are covered with a balcony. The building's corners are partially separate structures topped with mansard roofs, while post and lintel structures, topped with pediments, are placed on each side of the corner structures. The entire exterior is constructed of stone.After the building was constructed, a mechanic's lien was filed by the Greer family to prevent the county from taking possession of the property. The issue was finally resolved and the county officials moved in. Like other courthouses, the Harrison County courthouse fell into disrepair. In 1993, the courthouse saw renovations of the premises, including an elevator, replacement of the roof, dome, and stairs, as well as other much needed repairs.
