Ilchester is a village and civil parish, situated on the River Yeo or Ivel, five miles north of Yeovil, in the English county of Somerset. Originally a Roman town, and later a market town, Ilchester has a rich medieval history and was a notable settlement in the county; around the 12th and 13th centuries it was effectively the county town. It had, however, declined in size and importance by the beginning of the 18th century, and the last markets were held in 1833. In 1889 the historic corporation that had governed the town (the Bailiff and Burgesses) was dissolved.Ilchester is alternatively called Ivelchester (after the River Ivel) and the electoral ward of South Somerset District Council is named Ivelchester.

Ilchester Nunnery, in Ilchester, Somerset, England, was founded around 1217–1220 as the "White Hall Hospital of the Holy Trinity", (Latin: Alba Aula, French: Blanche Halle/Blanchesale) after the gift of a house and other property by William "The Dane" of Sock Dennis manor, Ilchester (Norman-French: Le Deneis etc., Latinised to Dacus (the adjectival form of Dacia being mediaeval Latin for Denmark) modernised to "Dennis"). From this family was probably descended the influential Denys family of Devon, (arms; three Danish battle axes) seated at Orleigh in the 16th century. By 1281, it had been converted into an Augustinian nunnery.In the early 14th century concerns were raised about the management of the nunnery and the poverty of the nuns. The building was expanded in 1370. By 1463 the nunnery had been dissolved and its chapel become a free chapel, which itself was dissolved in 1548.A ruined building still existed in 1791 but the stone was then used to build the nearby Castle Farm.

The Anglican Church of St Andrew, Northover, in Ilchester, Somerset, England, dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. Today it is part of the parish of Ilchester with Northover, one of the three parishes which constitute the Ilchester District Churches [1]. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is a redundant church in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It was vested in the Trust on 1 July 1986.

Ilchester Friary was founded between 1221 and 1260 as a Dominican monastery in Ilchester Somerset, England. The buildings were restored in the 13th and 14th centuries until the site occupied a 1.6 hectares (4.0 acres) site, and by the 15th century it extended beyond the town walls.It is believed to be the birthplace of Roger Bacon, possibly in 1213 or 1214.It was dissolved in 1538, as part of the dissolution of the monasteries, but the buildings continued to be used, as a silk mill and relief prison, particularly for Quakers, until it was finally demolished in the early 19th century.

The parish has a population of 199. The parish included the hamlet of Draycott. It lies near the left bank of the River Yeo opposite Yeovilton.

The Church of Saint Mary in Limington, Somerset, England dates from the late 14th century and includes fragments of an earlier building. It has been designated as a Grade I listed building.Fragments of the north door and tower date from the Norman period, but most of the building are from the 14th century with the north chapel being dated to 1328. It is built of local stone with Hamstone dressings. The tower has six bells, the oldest of which is from the 15th century. The interior includes a pulpit and altar table from the 17th century and an octagonal font from the 16th. There are several effigies including one of Sir Richard Gyvernay who built the chantry chapel and died in 1329. Below this is a smaller female figure and there is also a double monument of a male and female figure, which are believed to be Henry and Matilda Power and date from the 1340s.One rector of renown was Thomas Wolsey who held the living between 1500 and 1509, before becoming a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. resident in the parish for at least 5 years he was placed in the stocks by the Sheriff of Somerset for 'drunken and lewd behaviour' at the Merriott fare. The Anglican parish is part of the benefice of Ilchester with Northover, Limington Yeovilton and Podimore within the archdeaconry of Wells.
