Sandwich Mountain

Curious George Cottage was the summer home of H.A. Rey and Margret Rey, creators of the Curious George series of children’s books, located in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. The Reys first came to Waterville Valley in the 1950s. Hans was revising his popular astronomy book The Stars: A New Way to See Them and needed a place away from the glare of city lights to do observation. Waterville Valley, an "inland island" surrounded by hundreds of acres of national forest, was the perfect location for stargazing and the many outdoor activities the Reys loved. They spent the next twenty summers there, and wrote several Curious George stories while in Waterville Valley. The Reys’ cottage soon became an intellectual center for the town, hosting book clubs, discussion groups, and the opportunity to watch a children's author at work. Hans was known for his chalk talks, in which he would entertain visitors as he drew. Well-behaved children got to take a drawing home with them. At other times, he would take local children on nature walks, which often included conversations with imaginary people, thanks to his ability to throw his voice. After the Reys died, the cottage was donated to the town of Waterville Valley. It is now managed by a center providing educational and recreational programs for children and families.

The West Branch of the Mad River is a 3.2-mile-long (5.1 km) stream located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the United States. It is a tributary of the Mad River, part of the Pemigewasset River and ultimately the Merrimack River watershed. The West Branch rises on the northern slopes of Mount Tecumseh, and drops northeast into Thornton Gap, between Mount Tecumseh and Mount Osceola, two major summits of the White Mountains. The stream turns east, paralleled by Tripoli Road, until it encounters Osceola Brook joining from the north, then turns south into the intervale in which the village of Waterville Valley is situated. The West Branch joins the Mad River close to the center of the Waterville Valley resort.

Waterville Valley is a New England town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 508 at the 2020 census, up from 247 at the 2010 census.It is a resort town which attracts many visitors in the winter months with alpine skiing at Waterville Valley Resort and many miles of trails for cross-country skiing. During the summer, attractions include a golf course, tennis courts, and a variety of hiking options. The Mad River flows through the town, providing great views all year round.

Waterville Valley is a ski resort in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, United States. It is located within the White Mountain National Forest. Built on Mount Tecumseh, with a summit elevation of 3,997 feet (1,218 m) above sea level, the ski trails extend to a high point on the south ridge of the mountain at 3,840 feet (1,170 m), offering a vertical drop of 2,020 feet (615 m). The ski area has 11 lifts, including two high-speed quads and the slopes primarily face east and northeast. In addition to downhill skiing, the resort offers 46 miles (74 km) of Nordic skiing, golf, nationally-ranked tennis courts, a skateboard park, a year-round ice arena, hiking, biking, and water sports.

The Sleepers are two mountain peaks, East Sleeper 3,855 ft (1,175 m) and West Sleeper 3,881 ft (1,183 m), located within the Sandwich Range Wilderness in Grafton County, New Hampshire. Part of the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains, they are flanked to the northwest by Mount Tripyramid, to the northeast by Mount Passaconaway, and to the southeast by Mount Whiteface. The Kate Sleeper Trail passes close by both peaks.

Dickey Mountain is a mountain in Thornton, New Hampshire, United States. It is part of the White Mountains and has a summit that is 2,734 feet (833 m) above sea level. The mountain has an exposed summit which is accessible via the Welch-Dickey trail, a 4.4-mile (7.1 km) loop which also crosses Welch Mountain. It is one of five places in New Hampshire which is home to the jack pine.

The East Branch of the Whiteface River is a 1.9-mile-long (3.1 km) stream in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the United States. It is a tributary of the Whiteface River, part of the Saco River watershed. The East Branch, never larger than a brook, drains the southwestern slopes of Mount Whiteface, a 4,020-foot-high (1,230 m) summit in the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains. The stream begins within the town limits of Waterville Valley and flows south into Sandwich, where it joins the Whiteface River.

Mount Tecumseh is a mountain located in Grafton County, New Hampshire. The mountain is named after the Shawnee leader Tecumseh (c. 1768–1813), and is a part of the White Mountains. The east side of Tecumseh drains into the Mad River; the west side drains into several brooks. All are tributaries of the Pemigewasset River, which drains into the Merrimack River and thence into the Gulf of Maine in Massachusetts. Mount Tecumseh is the site of the Waterville Valley Resort, one of the largest ski areas in New Hampshire. Long believed to stand 4,003 feet in height, Mt. Tecumseh was the lowest on the Appalachian Mountain Club list of "four-thousand footers." As of July 2019, however, a new survey marker on the summit indicates an elevation of 3,997 feet.

Mount Tripyramid is a mountain located in Grafton County, New Hampshire. Part of the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains, it has three distinct peaks – North, Middle, and South – along its mile-long summit ridge. North, at 4,160 ft (1,270 m), is the highest. Scaur Peak and The Fool Killer are subsidiary peaks to the northwest and northeast. To the southeast, Tripyramid is flanked by The Sleepers. Mt. Tripyramid is drained on the west side by Slide Brook and Avalanche Brook, thence into the Mad River, Pemigewasset River, Merrimack River, and into the Gulf of Maine at Newburyport, Massachusetts. Tripyramid is drained on the east side by Sabbaday Brook, thence into the Swift River, Saco River, and into the Gulf of Maine at Saco, Maine. Tripyramid is drained on the north side by Pine Bend Brook, another tributary of the Swift River. Both North and Middle Tripyramid are included in the Appalachian Mountain Club's list of New England "four-thousand footers". Although over 4,000 feet in height, South Tripyramid is not, because it lacks topographic prominence, being less than 200 ft above the col on the ridge from Middle Tripyramid.

The Sandwich Range is located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the United States, north of the Lakes Region and south of the Kancamagus Highway. Although the range is not outstanding for its elevation, it is very rugged and has excellent views of the surrounding lakes, mountains, and forests. The Sandwich Range extends east–west about 30 miles (48 km) from Conway, New Hampshire on the Saco River to Campton on the Pemigewasset River. The Kancamagus Highway runs along the north side of the mountains, from Conway to North Woodstock. The highest peak in the range is Mount Tripyramid, with an elevation of 4,170 feet (1,270 m).The east part of the range drains by various streams into the Saco River and thence into the Atlantic Ocean at Saco, Maine. The west part drains into the East Branch Pemigewasset River and Mad River, thence into the Pemigewasset, Merrimack and into the sea at Newburyport, Massachusetts. The range shares its name with the town of Sandwich, situated at the range's western end. To the south are the Ossipee Mountains, and the ancient volcanic ring dike of the Mt. Shaw massif.

Mount Whiteface is a 4,019 ft (1,225 m) mountain located in Grafton County, New Hampshire. The mountain is part of the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains. Whiteface is flanked to the northwest by Mount Tripyramid, and to the northeast by Mount Passaconaway. Whiteface is on the eastern border of the Sandwich Range Wilderness. To the east, between Whiteface, Passaconaway, and Mt. Wonalancet, lies The Bowl natural area, an unlogged cirque. Mt. Whiteface lies within the watershed of the Saco River, which reaches the Gulf of Maine at Saco, Maine. The south side of Whiteface is drained by the Whiteface River, thence into the Cold River, Bearcamp River, Ossipee River, and the Saco River. The east side is drained by the Wonalancet River, thence into Swift River, and Bearcamp River. The north side is drained by Downes Brook, thence into another Swift River, and the Saco River. The summit of Mt. Whiteface is in a wooded area along the Rollins Trail, approximately .3 miles (0.5 km) north of the top of the massive granite cliff for which the mountain is named. Many hikers reach the open area at the top of the cliff and do not realize the true summit is farther to the north.The summit is popular among winter climbers, favoring the Blueberry Ledge trail for ascent.

The New Hampshire at-large congressional district is obsolete, with representation having since been divided into districts. However, from 1789 to 1847, New Hampshire elected members to the United States House of Representatives at-large: From 1789 to 1793, three members represented the state at-large. From 1793 to 1803, four members represented the state at-large. From 1803 to 1813, five members represented the state at-large. From 1813 to 1833, six members represented the state at-large. From 1833 to 1843, five members represented the state at-large. From 1843 to 1847, four members represented the state at-large. In 1847 at-large representation was replaced by four congressional districts.
