Tempsford

Tempsford Hall is a country house in Tempsford, Bedfordshire.

In 917, the group of Danes who had previously been based in Huntingdon relocated to Tempsford in Bedfordshire, together with other Danes from East Anglia. They built and fortified a new burh there, to serve as a forward base for attacks on English territory. Later that year, after launching an unsuccessful attack on Bedford, they were attacked by an English army from the territories of King Edward the Elder, as part of his widespread offensive which in that year overwhelmed the Danish territories in East Anglia and south-eastern Mercia. The burh was stormed and a Danish king, probably that of East Anglia, was killed, along with the Jarls Toglos and Manna and many of their followers, while the rest were captured.

The Tempsford Memorial is a war memorial in the village of Tempsford in Bedfordshire. The village was the home of RAF Tempsford. The memorial commemorates the women who served as secret agents in occupied Europe during the Second World War, the RAF aircrew who transported them, and the personnel from allied secret services who were killed in the war. The memorial bears the names of 75 known women agents, of whom 29 were arrested, 16 were executed, three died of illnesses while imprisoned, and one committed suicide using a cyanide L-pill before being captured.

Roxton is a small village and civil parish in the Borough of Bedford, Bedfordshire, England about 7 miles (11 km) north-east of the county town of Bedford. The 2011 census gives the population of Roxton as 348.

Black Cat Roundabout is on the junction between the A1 and A421 (formerly A428) Bedford road just south of St Neots. It was reconstructed in 2005-6 as part of the Great Barford bypass works to allow access to the new dual carriageway bypass. It takes its name from the garage and car repair workshop which opened in the 1920s at the junction called the Black Cat Garage. In later years the garage was converted to a nightclub and then a restaurant, before becoming derelict for many years. In the 1980s, the current large covered petrol station was opened on the site. A metal black cat sign was installed on the roundabout in January 2004, taking its shape from the cat on the original garage clock tower. During construction of the Great Barford bypass the black cat was temporarily relocated to the construction site office, before a second larger cat was returned to the roundabout upon completion in 2006. However, this sign was stolen during the summer of 2007. On 12 August 2008 it was announced that a third replacement Black Cat had been installed on the roundabout. In April 2009 the original sign was returned (albeit to a different location), accompanied by a note saying it had been found in a ditch.The roundabout can regularly be heard being referred to on traffic reports because of the major traffic jams that it causes on the A1.

Tempsford railway station was a railway station built by the Great Northern Railway to serve the village of Tempsford in Bedfordshire, England.

Begwary Brook in Bedfordshire is a four mile long tributary of the River Great Ouse. Its source is half a mile north of Duck's Cross, and it then flows east to join the Great Ouse in Wyboston. The Environment Agency classes its water quality as good.Begwary Brook is also the name of a nature reserve at the junction of the brook with the river, which is managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. Gravel extraction has created a small lake and several smaller pools and marshland. The pools are surrounded by willow trees, and plants include common fleabane and marsh woundwort. Dragonflies and damselflies are common over the marsh in the summer.There is access to the site by a footpath from the Wyboston Lakes complex.

Wyboston is a village in the English county of Bedfordshire, adjacent to the town of St Neots, on the Cambridgeshire border. The eastern part of the village is dominated by the A1 Great North Road. Approaching the Black Cat Roundabout from the Bedford direction, the parish boundary is in the centre of the A421 road. The northern junction of these roads is grade-separated. The Black Cat Roundabout is therefore partly within Wyboston parish. Wyboston is in the civil parish of Wyboston, Chawston and Colesden.The remainder of Wyboston is horticultural and agricultural as a result of the proximity of the River Great Ouse. Wyboston Lakes Resort at the edge of the village includes a golf course, hotel, spa, serviced offices and conference & training facilities. Wyboston is also the location of a conference centre owned and operated by Cambridge University's Robinson College. The public house Wait for the Waggon has closed down indefinitely. There is a service station which includes a BP garage with a Londis shop attached, Subway and a 24-hour McDonald's. The Crown Public House has a more ambitious offer, associated with a Premier Inn hotel. The Crown serves full meals as well as having a bar. It is close to the boundary with St Neots (Eaton Socon) and many passers-by will assume it is in that parish. Wyboston is the location of the Black Cat Roundabout, where the Bedford Road joins the A1 road. In the 1930s the location was the site of a cafe and fuel station, and was a notable stopping point for motorists. The name stuck for the road junction, and when the road system was improved in 2010 a black cat artwork was erected on the roundabout. Notwithstanding some vandalism, the Black Cat stands there today.

Girtford Halt was a short-lived railway halt on the Varsity Line which served the Girtford area of Sandy in Bedfordshire, England. It was opened by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1938, but closed to passenger traffic two years later in 1940. The line itself closed in 1968, and the site of the railway station has been obliterated by a roundabout.

Chawston is a hamlet in the civil parish of Wyboston, Chawston and Colesden, a part of the Borough of Bedford in the county of Bedfordshire, England. Although mainly situated on the western side of the A1 trunk road, the settlement does have a number of residential properties on the eastern side. Chawston is some 7.5 miles (12 km) northeast of Bedford and 3.5 miles (6 km) southwest of St Neots.

Blunham is a village and civil parish in the Central Bedfordshire district of Bedfordshire, England, about 6 miles (10 km) east of Bedford town centre. At the 2011 census date its population was 946. The River Ivel forms the parish's eastern boundary in places and the River Great Ouse its western and northern boundaries. The village is just over 0.6 miles (1 km) to the west of the A1 road, and Route 51 of the National Cycle Network passes to the south. At the north of village is an unusual double humpback bridge across the River Ivel and the Mill Stream which must be crossed to enter the village from the A1 road or Tempsford. The village school is notable for its thatched roof.
