Elkhart River

Ruthmere, formerly the Albert and Elizabeth Beardsley Residence, is a three-story Beaux-Arts mansion that is the most prominent historic residence in Elkhart, Indiana, United States. Built in 1910, the Ruthmere Mansion is now open to the public as a museum, along with the neighboring Dr. Havilah Beardsley House. Ruthmere is located along the St. Joseph River in Elkhart. The architect was Enock Hill Turnock, commissioned by Albert and Elizabeth Beardsley in 1908. The Beardsleys named the mansion in memory of their only child, Ruth, who died at seven months. ("Mere" reflects the Latin root maris and refers to the home's proximity to water.) The mansion was a place of business, family, political and social gatherings until the deaths of the Beardsleys in 1924. Robert Beardsley of The Beardsley Foundation purchased the mansion in 1967 with the main goal of restoring it to its original beauty in order to create a museum for the community. Restoration took place between 1969 and 1973 when the mansion was made available to the public. The property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and the Beardsley Avenue Historic District was established several years later.

Beardsley Avenue Historic District is a national historic district located at Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana. The district encompasses 41 contributing buildings, 3 contributing sites, 2 contributing structures, and 2 contributing objects in a predominantly residential section of Elkhart. It was developed after 1848, and includes residences in a number of architectural styles including Prairie School and Beaux Arts. Located in the district are the separately listed Dr. Havilah Beardsley House and Ruthmere Mansion. Other notable contributing resources are Island Park, Beardsley Park, the Main Street Memorial Bridge, St. Paul's Methodist Church, and the Best House.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Green Block, also known as the Smith Frye Building, is a historic commercial building located in Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana. It was built in 1895, and is a two-story, eclectic Italianate style brick commercial building. It features projecting pressed metal bays above each storefront and at the corners and arched second story openings with balconies.: 2 It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is located in the Elkhart Downtown Commercial Historic District.

Young Women's Christian Association, also known as the Elkhart Y.W.C.A. and Lexington House, is a historic YWCA located at Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana. It was built in 1919, and is a three-story, brick building on a raised basement and Bungalow / American Craftsman style design elements. It measures approximately 40 feet wide and 150 feet deep. It has a flat roof and arched openings on the first floor.: 5 It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. It is located in the Elkhart Downtown Commercial Historic District.

Dr. Havilah Beardsley House is a historic home located at Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana. It was built in 1848, and is a two-story, rectangular, Italianate style brick dwelling. It has a medium pitched gable roof, full width front porch with Ionic order fluted columns, rounded openings, and decorative brackets. It has later flanking one-story, flat roofed wings. It was built by Havilah Beardsley, founder of the city of Elkhart.: 5  The house is operated as a historic house museum as part of the Ruthmere Mansion complex.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. It is located in the Beardsley Avenue Historic District.

Elkhart Downtown Commercial Historic District is a national historic district located at Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana. The district encompasses 59 contributing buildings in the central business district of Elkhart. It was developed between about 1868 and 1930, and includes notable examples of Italianate, Queen Anne, and Classical Revival style architecture. Located in the district are the separately listed Green Block, Lerner Theatre, and Young Women's Christian Association. Other notable buildings include the Cornish Block (c. 1875), Franklin Street Station (1895), Menges Building (1908), former Post Office (1905), Midwest Museum of Modern Art (1922), Elkhart Water Company, Masonic Temple, Rowe Block (1900), and Dreves Building (c. 1915).It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

The Lerner Theatre, previously known as the Elco Theatre, is a historic theatre located at Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana, United States. It was built in 1924, and is a two-story, reinforced concrete and steel, Beaux-Arts style building. The front facade features four Corinthian order columns, three freestanding urns, enriched cornice, parapet and frieze. The building is faced with terra cotta and has a lighted canopy projecting over the sidewalk. The auditorium features a large central dome measuring 30 to 40 feet in diameter. Built as a vaudeville theatre, by the late 1920s it had evolved into a motion picture palace.: 2 It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is located in the Elkhart Downtown Commercial Historic District.

Wellfield Botanic Gardens, located in Elkhart, Indiana, United States, is a 36 acres (15 ha) botanical garden and a working source of hydropower and drinking water. It is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization funded by private donations, earned revenue, memberships, and grants.

Elkhart ( EL-kart) is a city in Elkhart County, Indiana, United States. The city is located 15 miles (24 km) east of South Bend, Indiana, 110 miles (180 km) east of Chicago, Illinois, and 150 miles (240 km) north of Indianapolis, Indiana. Elkhart has the larger population of the two principal cities of the Elkhart-Goshen Metropolitan Statistical Area, which in turn is part of the South Bend-Elkhart-Mishawaka Combined Statistical Area, in a region commonly known as Michiana. The population was 53,923 at the 2020 census. Despite the shared name and being the most populous city in the county, it is not the county seat of Elkhart County; that position is held by the city of Goshen, located about 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Elkhart.

Mark L. and Harriet E. Monteith House was a historic home located at Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana. It was built around 1908, and was a two-story, T-shaped, frame dwelling which was remodeled in the Tudor Revival style in the 1930s. It featured a steeply pitched roof, two-story porch, and brick and half-timbering on the exterior.: 2  It has been demolished. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

The North Side Gymnasium is a 7,373 seat multi-purpose arena opened in 1954 located in Elkhart, Indiana, United States on the campus of North Side Middle School. Elkhart High School, hosts their varsity boys' basketball games along with other varsity sports such as volleyball and wrestling. It was home to the Elkhart Express of the International Basketball League. At one point it was the largest high school gym in the country, seating 8,200 prior to renovation. Ground was broken on the building in July 1953 and the project cost a total of $1.3 million, with work proceeding after a protest filed with the Indiana State Board of Tax Commissioners was rejected. When the field house was opened on November 24, 1954, the facility was the largest high school gym in the United States. In its initial season of operation, the gym generated $57,500 in revenue from ticket sales, concessions and parking fees from the 134,000 fans who attended high school games.The gym has also hosted professional wrestling matches, ice shows and the Harlem Globetrotters.For the 2005 season, the Elkhart Express of the International Basketball League debuted in the North Side Gymnasium, under a deal in which the arena was leased by the school district to the park board, which then leased it to the team, as part of an effort to skirt restrictions on leasing the facility for financial gain.
