Hawarden Castle (18th century)

Hawarden ( ; Welsh: Penarlâg) is a village and community in Flintshire, Wales. It is part of the Deeside conurbation on the Wales-England border and is home to Hawarden Castle. In the 2011 census the ward of the same name had a population of 1,887, whereas the community of the same name, which also includes Ewloe (which also has a castle) Mancot and Aston had a population of 13,920. The scenic wooded Hawarden Park abuts the clustered settlement in the south. Hawarden Bridge consists of distribution and industrial business premises beyond Shotton/Queensferry and the Dee. The west of the main street is called The Highway, its start marked by the crossroads with a fountain in the middle, near which are public houses, some with restaurants.The village is 7 miles (11 km) from Chester. In 2014 it was named in The Sunday Times' annual Best Places To Live List.The highest temperature in Wales was recorded in Hawarden on 18 July 2022 at 37.1°C. The previous highest temperature recorded in Wales, 35.2°C, was also recorded in Hawarden on 2 August 1990. Hawarden has held this record almost continuously, until it was replaced for a few hours by Gogerddan which recorded a temperature of 35.3°C on 18 July 2022, first breaking the Welsh record, after which Hawarden surpassed Gogerddan.

Hawarden Old Castle (Welsh: Castell Penarlâg) is a Grade I listed medieval castle near Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales. The castle's origins are indeterminate and the oldest fortifications on this site may date back to the Iron Age, later being used as a Norman Motte-and-bailey castle which was reportedly destroyed and replaced in a short period during the 13th century. The castle played an important role during the Welsh struggle for independence in the 13th century. At Easter 1282, Dafydd ap Gruffudd attacked and captured Hawarden Castle, thereby starting the final Welsh conflict with Norman England, in the course of which Welsh independence was lost. King Edward I's sense of outrage was such that he designed a punishment for Dafydd harsher than any previous form of capital punishment; Dafydd was hanged, drawn, and quartered in Shrewsbury in October 1283. A sense at the wider outrage caused by Dafydd's attack being made at Easter can be read in the account of the Chronicle of Lanercost; ". . . the Welsh nation, unable to pass their lives in peace, broke over their borders on Palm Sunday, carrying fire and sword among the people engaged in procession, and even laid siege [to some places – probably referring to Flint and Rhuddlan]; whose Prince Llywelyn, deceived (more's the pity) by the advice of his brother David, fiercely attacked his lord the King; as we read written about Christ, 'him whom I loved most hath set himself against me.'"In 1294 the castle was captured during the revolt of Madog ap Llywelyn. After the English Civil War in the 17th century the castle was slighted on the orders of Oliver Cromwell. Its ruins are on the New Hawarden Castle estate and are open to the public on some Sundays, typically the second and fourth Sundays in summertime.

St Deiniols Ash is a 16th- or 17th-century Grade-I-listed timber-framed manor house in Hawarden, in Flintshire, north-east Wales. The house contains a series of wall paintings depicting the life of St Deiniol that are considered among the best-preserved examples in Britain. The house allegedly stands on the site where, in the 6th century AD, St Deiniol was shipwrecked in the Dee estuary. The present house was built by the prominent Aldersey family of Chester. Towards the close of the 17th century, the house passed into the possession of the Cratchley family.

St Deiniol's Church, Hawarden, is in the village of Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales. It is the parish church of the rectorial benefice of Hawarden in the deanery of Hawarden, the archdeaconry of Wrexham, and the diocese of St Asaph. The church has associations with W. E. Gladstone and his family, and is designated by Cadw as a Grade II* listed building.

Mancot is a village in Flintshire, Wales, approximately 1 mile from Queensferry, and Hawarden and 6 miles from Chester. According to the 2001 Census, Mancot had a population of 3,462. In 1849 the population of the village was 282.Following reorganisation the population of Mancot was listed under Hawarden. The electoral ward remains giving a population taken at the 2011 Census of 3,496.The placename Mancot is believed to mean 'humble dwelling', with the earliest recorded reference to the village being in the late 13th century.Although now considered a village in its own right, Mancot was originally divided into three small hamlets consisting of Little Mancot, Big Mancot and Mancot Royal. Though these areas historically do not exist, they still are a feature on OS maps and the meteorological office databank Mancot was earlier spelled with a double "tt" ending - Mancott.Village amenities include an Animal farm park, a post office, village hall, park and playing fields, bowling green, library, a newsagent, a veterinary clinic, a Presbyterian church, Sandycroft County Primary School and the White Bear public house. The post office closed is now closed and has been converted into a private dwelling. Mancot was also home to a Conservative club and later on a social club. The club itself was originally a peanut factory located in Hawarden way opposite a once thriving fish and chip shop known later on as "Fred's". During the second world war the club became a munitions factory producing bullets for the nearby RAF camp in Sealand. After the war it became a Conservative Club and a place for many Mancot villagers to socialise. It was well known for its snooker tables and cabaret nights. Both the club and fish shop were demolished for housing. The village is situated close to the Wales-England border. Notable people born in the village include Dr. Neville Brown FRSA Psychologist and Lexicographer now of Lichfield who was born in Mancot Royal in 1935, the late football player and Wales manager Gary Speed, who was born there in 1969, fellow former Everton captain Kevin Ratcliffe and former Sunderland goalkeeper Tony Norman.

Gladstone's Library, known until 2010 as St Deiniol's Library (Welsh: Llyfrgell Deiniol Sant), is a residential library in Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales, UK.Gladstone's Library is Britain's only Prime Ministerial Library and the national memorial to William Ewart Gladstone.It is home to a collection of more than 250,000 printed items, including theological, historical, cultural and political materials.

Hawarden railway station (Welsh: Penarlâg) serves the village of Hawarden in Flintshire, Wales. It is situated on the Borderlands Line 10½ miles (17 km) north of Wrexham Central and all passenger services are operated by Transport for Wales. The station is unstaffed.

Hawarden Rangers F.C. is a Welsh football club playing in Hawarden, Flintshire, after being founded in 1974 by Elwyn Owen. They currently play in the Ardal NW, the third tier of the Welsh football pyramid. The senior team were members of the North East Wales Football League Premier Division, following the restructure of the FA Wales Pyramid Structure and have previously been members of the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) and prior to that, the Clwyd League. The Junior sections consist of teams ranging from U6 to U19, all of which compete in the Queensferry Sports Flintshire Junior and Youth League.

Sandycroft is a village in Flintshire, Wales, approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) southeast of Queensferry and 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Chester, on the B5129 road between Queensferry and Broughton. The community population taken at the 2011 census was 6,724.

Deeside (Welsh: Glannau Dyfrdwy) is the name given to a predominantly industrial conurbation of towns and villages in Flintshire and Cheshire on the Wales–England border lying near the canalised stretch of the River Dee that flows from neighbouring Chester into the Dee Estuary. These include Connah's Quay, Shotton, Queensferry, Aston, Garden City, Sealand, Broughton, Bretton, Hawarden, Ewloe, Mancot, Pentre, Saltney and Sandycroft. The population is around 50,000, with a plurality (17,500) living in Connah's Quay.Deeside is known for its industry, providing jobs for the people of Cheshire, Merseyside and North Wales. The biggest employment area in Deeside is Deeside Industrial Park, located on the north bank of the Dee on the southern edge of the Wirral peninsula, which has both historical and contemporary significance, and provides Deeside and the surrounding area with jobs in many different industries from construction to food production. Deeside is also home to steel manufacturer Tata Steel and Toyota's highly advanced engine manufacturing plant.

Sandycroft railway station was located on the eastern edge of the village of Sandycroft, Flintshire.

Queensferry (Welsh: Fferi Buddug / Fferi Isaf) is a town and community in Flintshire, Wales, lying on the River Dee near the border. The community includes the village of Sandycroft. It is between Connah's Quay, Shotton and Saltney Ferry. Queensferry is also part of the wider Deeside conurbation.
