Hillsborough is a mixed industrial and residential suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, located approximately 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) to the south-east of the city centre. The area was first owned by Edward Garland, who initially called it Broomfield Farm after settling the land with his wife Annie in 1854. Garland grazed cattle on the low-lying land south of the Ōpāwaho / Heathcote River, and sheep on the slopes of the Port Hills. It is unclear when the farm was given the name Hillsborough, however the name Broomfield eventually fell into disuse as the area developed. By the area's integration into greater Christchurch in 1945, the name Hillsborough was exclusively used. Despite this, the area's early history is still reflected in some street names, with a main thoroughfare of the suburb - Garlands Road - named for the Garland family and following the route of their original driveway.The suburb's residential and industrial areas are largely divided, with much of the land around the base of the Port Hills in the suburb's south zoned industrial and residential areas further north, near the Ōpāwaho. The area around the base of the hills has long been used for industrial purposes, and was formerly occupied by multiple brickworks.

Opawa is an inner suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, located 2.5 kilometres south-east of the city centre. The name is a contraction of "Ōpāwaho", which, in Māori, means a place of ('ō') an outer pā or outpost ('pāwaho'). "Ōpāwaho" or "Opaawaho" is the Māori name for the Ōpāwaho / Heathcote River.

St Martins is an inner suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, located two kilometres south of the city centre. Primarily a residential area, St Martins is host to a small shopping mall complex situated on Wilsons Road, the main thoroughfare through the suburb. Amenities include the Hansen, Centaurus and Saint Martins Parks.

Huntsbury is a suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, on the fringes of the Port Hills three kilometres south of the city centre. Huntsbury amalgamated with Christchurch City on 1 April 1941, on the same day as the New Brighton borough joined the city council.

Alpine Ice Centre (also known as Alpine Ice Sports Centre) is an indoor ice sports and public skate centre, that opened in April 1985. It is located in the New Zealand city of Christchurch, in the inner-city suburb of Opawa. It is the current home venue of the Canterbury Red Devils in the New Zealand Ice Hockey League (NZIHL) and Canterbury Inferno in the New Zealand Women's Ice Hockey League (NZWIHL). The arena is the only operational indoor ice sports centre in Christchurch.

RDU 98.5FM is a student radio station operating in Christchurch. It broadcasts on a frequency of 98.5 MHz, and is a member of the Student Radio Network of stations. RDU began in 1976 on 1420kHz. During the period 1977 to 1985 the station was on 1230, 1503 (3XU) and 1422 kHz (3XB). FM broadcasts started in 1986 on 90.5 MHz and moved to 98.3 MHz in 1987 until 2003.

Beckenham is an inner suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, located three kilometres south of the city centre. The Ōpāwaho / Heathcote River winds through this predominantly residential suburb, a section of which is often referred to locally as the "Beckenham Loop". Beckenham is bounded by Sydenham to the north, Somerfield to the west, Cashmere and Huntsbury to the south and St Martins to the east.

Waltham is an inner suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, located approximately two kilometres south-east of the city centre. State Highway 76, part of Christchurch's ring road system, and known there as Brougham Street, runs through the suburb, as does the Lyttelton Line rail corridor. Approximate boundaries of the suburb are Waltham Road, Moorhouse Avenue, Ferry Road, Ensors Road, and the Heathcote River. Waltham was originally part of the Sydenham borough and was incorporated into the City of Christchurch in 1903 when the borough was ended. In the early 1980s local residents and the Christchurch city council tried to name the western part of the suburb, Charleston, between Ferry Road and Ensors Road. This was done to maintain the residential nature of the area against perceived industrial expansion. The attempt was partly successful and that area today is referred to as both Waltham and Charleston. Te Pīhopatanga o Te Waipounamu (the bishopric of the South Island; also known as Te Hui Amorangi o Te Waipounamu, lit. the synod of the South Island) is an episcopal polity (or diocese) of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia based at premises at 290 Ferry Road in Christchurch. Te Pīhopatanga encompasses the South Island of New Zealand in its entirety and also Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. According to the 2001 census there are approximately 15,000 Māori Anglicans within this area. Te Waipounamu is one of five pīhopatanga (episcopal units) that comprise Te Pīhopatanga o Aotearoa, the Māori Anglican Church in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Woolston is a light industrial and residential suburb of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand. It is situated three kilometres southeast of the city centre, close to major arterial routes including State Highways 74 and 76 to Banks Peninsula. The Heathcote River flows through the suburb. Famous for its laydown center in Manning Place. This is a lower socio economic area. Still very beautiful

A major earthquake occurred in Christchurch on Tuesday 22 February 2011 at 12:51 p.m. local time (23:51 UTC, 21 February). The Mw6.2 (ML6.3) earthquake struck the entire of the Canterbury region in the South Island, centred 6.7 kilometres (4.2 mi) south-east of the central business district. It caused widespread damage across Christchurch, killing 185 people, in New Zealand's fifth-deadliest disaster. Christchurch's central city and eastern suburbs were badly affected, with damage to buildings and infrastructure already weakened by the magnitude 7.1 Canterbury earthquake of 4 September 2010 and its aftershocks. Significant liquefaction affected the eastern suburbs, producing around 400,000 tonnes of silt. The earthquake was felt across the South Island and parts of the lower and central North Island. While the initial quake only lasted for approximately 10 seconds, the damage was severe because of the location and shallowness of the earthquake's focus in relation to Christchurch as well as previous quake damage. Subsequent population loss saw the Christchurch main urban area fall behind the Wellington equivalent, to decrease from second- to third-most populous area in New Zealand. Adjusted for inflation, the earthquake caused over NZD$77 billion in damages, making it New Zealand’s costliest natural disaster and the 21st-most-expensive disaster in history.

Lancaster Park, also known as Jade Stadium and AMI Stadium for sponsorship reasons, was a sports stadium in Waltham, a suburb of Christchurch in New Zealand. The stadium was closed permanently due to damage sustained in the February 2011 earthquake and subsequently demolished in 2019. It was reopened in 2022.The stadium had been the venue for various sports including rugby union, cricket, rugby league, association football, athletics and trotting. It had also hosted various non-sporting events including concerts by Pearl Jam in 2009, Bon Jovi in 2008, Roger Waters in 2007, Meat Loaf in 2004, U2 in 1989 & 1993, Tina Turner in 1993 and 1997, Dire Straits in 1986 and 1991, and Billy Joel in 1987. However the stadium was primarily a rugby and cricket ground and was the home of the Crusaders rugby union team, who compete in Super Rugby. Its capacity was 38,628.
