Shirley Plantation is an estate on the north bank of the James River in Charles City County, Virginia. It is located on scenic byway State Route 5, between Richmond and Williamsburg. It is the oldest active plantation in Virginia and the oldest family-owned business in North America, dating back to 1614, with operations starting in 1648. It used about 70 to 90 African slaves at a time for plowing the fields, cleaning, childcare, and cooking. It was added to the National Register in 1969 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970. After the acquisition, rebranding, and merger of Tuttle Farm in Dover, New Hampshire, Shirley Plantation received the title of the oldest business continuously operating in the United States.

The Appomattox River is a tributary of the James River, approximately 157 miles (253 km) long, in central and eastern Virginia, named for the Appomattocs Indian tribe who lived along its lower banks in the 17th century. It drains a cotton and tobacco-growing region of the Piedmont and coastal plain southwest of Richmond.

Grant's Headquarters at City Point is a museum operated by the National Park Service at Appomattox Manor in Hopewell, Virginia. It is a unit of the Petersburg National Battlefield Park. City Point was a port on the James River. During the last years of the American Civil War, from the port there, the City Point Railroad was used to support the Union forces during the Siege of Petersburg 1864–65. The successful capture of Petersburg and its network of railroads was the key to the fall of the Confederate capital city of Richmond, ending the war less than a week later. At the museum, the grounds include Grant's headquarters, and a plantation house with outbuildings. In the plantation house are furnished rooms, an introductory video, a diorama, and a bookshop.

Appomattox Manor is a former plantation house in Hopewell, Virginia, United States. It is best known as the Union headquarters during the Siege of Petersburg in 1864–65. The restored c. 1751 manor house on a bluff overlooking the confluence of the James River and Appomattox River, and the grounds are managed by the National Park Service. The museum there, Grant's Headquarters at City Point Museum, is a unit of the Petersburg National Battlefield Park.

Upper Shirley is a historic plantation house located near Charles City, Charles City County, Virginia. In 1866, the owner of Shirley Plantation, Hill Carter, decided to retire and divide his Shirley Plantation estate, with the bulk of the estate (the current Shirley Plantation) bequeathed to his son, Robert, and the 'Upper Shirley' portion bequeathed to William Fitzhugh Carter. The original section of the house was built in 1868–1870, which has consequently been enlarged to its present size in 1890. It is a two-story, nearly square, stucco covered brick dwelling with an overhanging hipped roof. It measures approximately 42 feet by 47 feet. The front facade features a portico with stylized Doric order columns. On the west elevation is a doorway originally on the Warren House in Harrisonburg, Virginia; it is protected by a two-level porch which stretches across the entire facade. The house was built by Hill Carter for his son William Fitzhugh Carter of materials salvaged from a large 18th-century building that was demolished at Shirley Plantation.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Upper Shirley is now home to Upper Shirley Vineyards.

City Point was a town in Prince George County, Virginia, United States, that was annexed by the independent city of Hopewell in 1923. It served as headquarters of the Union Army during the siege of Petersburg during the American Civil War.

City Point Historic District is a national historic district located at Hopewell, Virginia. The district encompasses 85 contributing buildings and 3 contributing sites at the tip of a peninsula at the confluence of the Appomattox River and James River. The district primarily includes one- and two-story, wood-frame single-family dwellings dated to the 19th century. Notable buildings include St. John's Episcopal Church (1840), Civil War Catholic Chapel (1865), the Cocke House (c. 1840, 1916), Miami Lodge (1912), Cook House (c. 1858), St. John's Rectory (c. 1848), and Christopher Proctor House (c. 1800). Located in the district and separately listed is Appomattox Manor.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Presquile National Wildlife Refuge in the U.S. state of Virginia is one of four refuges that make up the Eastern Virginia Rivers National Wildlife Refuge Complex. It is managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The refuge is a 1,329-acre (5.38 km2) island in the James River, located approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of Richmond. It is located in the easternmost part of Chesterfield County, northeast of Hopewell. In 1953, A. D Williams, a Richmond tobacco magnate, willed a parcel of land called Presquile to the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries for use as a wildlife refuge. Previously Presquile had functioned as a farm and plantation. The main house at Presquile was built in the 1760s but was demolished in 1964. Established to protect habitat for wintering waterfowl and other migratory birds, Presquile is an important component in the network of refuges on and around the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States. Presquile historically provided important habitat for wintering Canada geese that breed along James Bay in eastern Canada. The refuge is also home to nesting and roosting bald eagles. The refuge is primarily hardwood swamp, with a fringe of marsh and 300 acres (1.2 km2) of upland fields.

Charles Hardaway Marks Bridges are twin spans which carry State Route 10 across the Appomattox River in Virginia. The bridges are in Chesterfield County, Prince George County, and the independent city of Hopewell in the Tri-Cities area of the Richmond-Petersburg region. The first span was completed in the early 1970s and the second span was constructed in the mid-1990s. In 1998, the bridges were named in honor of Charles Hardaway Marks (1921–2004), a prominent local attorney and politician who was long a state legislator representing the area in the Virginia General Assembly. Marks was a retired US Marine Corps Captain who served in the Pacific theater during World War II, was wounded at the Battle of Iwo Jima and awarded a Purple Heart. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1962 through 1991.Due to the wording of the Hopewell city charter, the portion of the Appomattox River adjacent to the shoreline of that city is in Prince George County. Thus, a portion of the twin bridges pass through the county as they cross the river. Nearby the current bridges was an earlier drawbridge which was the site of a fatal bus accident on December 22, 1935, which killed 13 people who drowned when the bus failed to stop and plunged into the river while the drawbridge was open.

Downtown Hopewell Historic District is a national historic district located at Hopewell, Virginia. The district encompasses 38 contributing buildings in the central business district of Hopwell. The district primarily includes masonry buildings, largely built after a devastating fire in 1915. The scale is low with most buildings only two stories in height with decorative brick cornices and Art Deco features. Notable buildings include the Wells Building, Larkin Building (1916), Randolph Hotel (1927), former National Bank of Hopewell (1916), D. L. Elder Bank (1929), and First Federal Savings and Loan building (1951). Located in the district and separately listed are the Hopewell Municipal Building and Beacon Theatre.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, with several subsequent boundary increases.

Beacon Theatre, also known as the Broadway Theatre and Pythian Lodge, is a historic theatre building located at Hopewell, Virginia.

Hopewell Municipal Building is a historic municipal building located at Hopewell, Virginia. It was built in 1925, and is a three-story, nine-bay, rectangular, sandstone brick building in the Classical Revival style. Attached to the main building is a three-story annex built in 1957. The main entrance is a stone framed double door with a five pane transom window and a six foot deep portico with two stone unfluted columns on either side. The building houses city offices and the police department.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
