Operation Dracula was a World War II-airborne and amphibious attack on Rangoon by British and Anglo-Indian forces during the Burma Campaign. The plan was first proposed in mid-1944 when the Allied South East Asia Command was preparing to reoccupy Burma, but was dropped as the necessary landing craft and other resources were not available. In March 1945 however, it was resurrected, as it was vital to capture Rangoon before the start of the monsoon (which was expected in the second week of May) to secure the lines of communication of the Allied troops in Burma. During April 1945, units of the British Fourteenth Army advanced to within 40 miles (64 km) of Rangoon, but were delayed until 1 May by an improvised Japanese force which held Pegu. On the same day, as part of Operation Dracula, a composite Gurkha parachute battalion landed on Elephant Point at the mouth of the Rangoon River. Once they had secured the coastal batteries, minesweepers cleared the river of mines. On 2 May, the Indian 26th Division began landing on both banks of the river. The monsoon also broke on this day, earlier than had been expected. However, the Imperial Japanese Army had abandoned Rangoon several days earlier, and the units of the Indian 26th Division occupied the city and its vital docks without opposition. They linked up with Fourteenth Army four days later.

The Gitameit Music Institute (Burmese: ဂီတမိတ် ဂီတသင်တန်းကျောင်း) is a non-profit music school and community centre in Yankin Township, Yangon, Myanmar. The school offers holistic music programs that incorporate the study of western music genres and traditional and folk Burmese music. Gitameit also houses one of the country's largest musical archives, including digital copies of phonograph records. The school maintains a two-year "teaching artist" program with the University of Washington.

South Okkalapa Township (Burmese: တောင်ဥက္ကလာပ မြို့နယ် [tàʊɰ̃ ʔoʊʔkəlàpa̰ mjo̰nɛ̀]) is located in the eastern part of Yangon. The township comprises 14 wards, and shares borders with North Okkalapa Township in the north, North Dagon Township in the east, Yankin Township in the west and Thingangyun Township in the south. South Okkalapa was one of the satellite towns established in 1959. Today, it is a firmly established part of the city, albeit with nominal access to the city's electricity grid and sewer system.

Yankin Education College (In Burmese ; ရန်ကင်းပညာရေးကောလိပ်) is an educational college located in Yankin Township, Kanbe', Yangon Region, Burma. It teaches basic and essential role of teacher for two years which produces primary & secondary teachers yearly. Later on, precisely, in 2003, it launched new training program for fresh graduate called COBOL. First established as STCT on 1 August 1947 (1947-08-01) Upgraded to EC on 27 November 1998 (1998-11-27) Location - No.4, Thitsar Road, 11ward, Yankin Township Campus Area - 15.308 acres (6.195 ha)

The Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma, known as the Union of Burma from 1962 to 1974, was the Burmese state under the military dictatorship of Ne Win from 1962 to 1988. It was established by the Union Revolutionary Council (RC), the military junta founded by Ne Win and his allies in the Tatmadaw (Burmese military) after they overthrew the democratically elected government of Prime Minister U Nu in a coup d'état on 2 March 1962. Following the 1962 coup d'état, the RC made the Burmese Way to Socialism Burma's state ideology. Ne Win then founded the Burma Socialist Programme Party (BSPP) as the country's vanguard party on 4 July 1962. For the next 26 years, Ne Win ruled Burma as a dictator, serving as both Chairman of the BSPP (later President of Burma) and Prime Minister of Burma, the country's head of state and the head of government, respectively. Ne Win's governance of Burma was characterised by isolationism, totalitarianism, superstition, xenophobia, and a rejection of Cold War politics. Mass pro-democracy protests in 1988, popularly known as the 8888 Uprising, pressured BSPP officials, including Ne Win, to resign en masse and adopt a multi-party system. However, on 18 September 1988, the Tatmadaw staged a coup d'état against the BSPP, violently ended the protests, and established a new military junta, the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC).

The first fourteen years of post-independence Burma were marred by several communist and ethnic insurgencies. Prominent insurgent groups during this period include the Communist Party of Burma (CPB, "white flags") led by Thakin Than Tun, the Communist Party (Burma) ("red flags") led by Thakin Soe, the People's Volunteer Organisation (Yèbaw Hpyu) led by Bo La Yaung (a member of the Thirty Comrades), the Revolutionary Burma Army (RBA) led by communist officers Bo Zeya, Bo Yan Aung and Bo Yè Htut (all three of them members of the Thirty Comrades), and the Karen National Union (KNU).

Inya Lake Hotel (Burmese: အင်းလျားလိတ်ဟိုတယ်) is a historic hotel located on the shores of Inya Lake in Mayangon Township, Yangon, Myanmar. Encompassing 27 acres of tropical gardens, the hotel is known for its distinctive Soviet-era modernist architecture and lakeside setting. The architectural design integrates functional features such as natural ventilation, broad corridors, and shaded verandas. The hotel is considered a Yangon landmark, reflecting a unique fusion of Cold War-era politics, Soviet design, and Burmese hospitality.

Myanmar Gems Museum, in Yangon, Myanmar, is a museum dedicated to precious Burmese gem stones. The museum is located on the third floor of a four-story building, located near Kaba Aye Pagoda. The Gems Mart at the Gems Museum consists of 82 stores on three floors, and sells high-quality raw and finished gem products, offering rubies, sapphires, pearls, jade and more. The mart is open from 9 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Sunday. The museum building is the site of semi-annual Myanmar Gems Emporium, attended by gems and jewellery merchants from around the world.

Kaba Aye Pagoda (Burmese: ကမ္ဘာအေးစေတီ; pronounced [ɡəbàʔézèdì]; also spelt Gaba Aye Pagoda; lit. World Peace Pagoda), formally Thiri Mingala Gaba Aye Zedidaw, သီရိမင်္ဂလာကမ္ဘာအေးစေတီတော်), is a Buddhist pagoda located on Kaba Aye Road, Mayangon Township, Yangon, Myanmar. The pagoda was built in 1952 by U Nu in preparation for the Sixth Buddhist Council that he held from 1954 to 1956. The pagoda measures 111 feet (34 m) high and is also 111 feet (34 m) around the base. The pagoda is located approximately 11 km north of Yangon, a little past the Inya Lake Hotel. The Maha Pasana Guha (great cave) was built simultaneously with the Kaba Aye Pagoda and is located in the same complex. The cave is a replica of the Satta Panni cave, located in India, where the First Buddhist Synod was convened. The six entrances of The Maha Pasana Cave symbolize the Sixth Great Synod. The cave is 455 feet (139 m) long and 370 feet (110 m) wide. Inside, the assembly hall is 220 feet (67 m) long and 140 feet (43 m) wide.

The State Saṅgha Mahā Nāyaka Committee (Burmese: နိုင်ငံတော် သံဃာ့မဟာနာယကအဖွဲ့, abbreviated Mahana or မဟန in Burmese, SSMNC in English) is a government-appointed body of high-ranking Buddhist monks that oversees and regulates the Sangha (Buddhist clergy) in Burma (Myanmar).

Golden City is a mixed-use complex located in the Yankin section of Yangon. Its master plan includes nine 33-story residential towers, a hotel, a business center and a shopping mall. As of 2020, the first two phases of the master plan—seven residential towers and a business center, have been completed. Work on phase 3, which includes a hotel, shopping mall and cinemas, and a residential tower, had not begun as of March 2020. The complex's first four towers were tallest buildings in Myanmar from 2016 to 2019. The complex's second batch of towers (Towers 5–7), the same height as the first four, then also became the tallest buildings in the country from 2018 to 2019.

Myanmar International School (MIS) is an independent coeducational day school, (Nursery school to Year 13) located in Yangon, Myanmar. It is one of 18 international schools located in Yangon and should not be confused with other similarly named international schools in Myanmar, such as MISY. MIS follows the internationally recognized Cambridge International Schools curriculum with a core of academic subjects and a range of enrichment courses and activities, and with an international teaching staff. The current chief education officer of the school is Mr. Peter McMurray.
