Les Gorges d'Apremont are located several kilometers from Fontainebleau. Les Gorges d'Apremont is a bouldering i.e.(rock climbing) area with several hundred boulders of all difficulty levels (Font Scale F4-F8a).

The region around Fontainebleau in France is particularly famous for its concentrated bouldering areas. French alpine climbers practiced bouldering there since the 19th century. It remains today a prime climbing location. It is the biggest and most developed bouldering area in the world, and is where the Fontainebleau grading system originated.

Le Bas-Cuvier is one of the most famous bouldering sites in Fontainebleau. Due to a remarkably good concentration of boulders, wide variety of problems of varying levels and relative closeness to the town it has become one of the first places that many climbers visit. Famous problems include La Marie Rose, bouldering's first 6a and L'abattoir, the first 7a at Fontainebleau.

Centre de Morphologie Mathématique (or Center of Mathematical Morphology, or CMM) is a research center of the École des Mines de Paris, France, devoted to the research and promotion of mathematical morphology. It was created in 1968 as a result of the works of Georges Matheron and Jean Serra, who were hired as its first director and assistant director, respectively. In 1979, the center was renamed Centre de Géostatistique et de Morphologie Mathématique, reflecting its increased scope. In 1986, the part related to geostatistics split into an independent center (Centre de Géostatistique), still directed by Matheron. Serra was named the directory of the new CMM. The research center developed XLim which was used at the origin of Aphelion developments in 1999. The CMM is located at Fontainebleau, France.

The Centre hospitalier Sud Seine et Marne is a teaching hospital in Fontainebleau, Montereau-Fault-Yonne and Nemours. It is a teaching hospital of Paris-Est Créteil University.It is a result of the merger of three hospitals in each of the above cities.It was established in January 2017.

The Communauté d'agglomération du Pays de Fontainebleau is a communauté d'agglomération in the Seine-et-Marne département and in the Île-de-France région of France. It was formed in January 2017 by the merger of the former Communauté de communes du pays de Fontainebleau, the Communauté de communes entre Seine et Forêt and several communes from other communities. Its area is 437.4 km2. Its population was 68,480 in 2018, of which 15,407 in Fontainebleau proper.

The arrondissement of Fontainebleau is an arrondissement of France in the Seine-et-Marne department in the Île-de-France region. It has 85 communes. Its population is 155,817 (2019), and its area is 1,228.5 km2 (474.3 sq mi).

Palace of Fontainebleau ( FON-tin-bloh, US also -⁠bloo; French: Château de Fontainebleau [ʃɑto d(ə) fɔ̃tɛnblo]), located 55 kilometers (34 miles) southeast of the center of Paris, in the commune of Fontainebleau, is one of the largest French royal châteaux. The medieval castle and subsequent palace served as a residence for the French monarchs from Louis VII to Napoleon III. Francis I and Napoleon were the monarchs who had the most influence on the palace as it stands today. It became a national museum in 1927 and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 for its unique architecture and historical importance.

The commune has the largest land area in the Île-de-France region; it is the only one to cover a larger area than Paris itself. The commune is closest to Seine-et-Marne Prefecture, Melun. Fontainebleau, together with the neighbouring commune of Avon and three other smaller communes, form an urban area of 36,724 inhabitants (2018). This urban area is a satellite of Paris. Fontainebleau is renowned for the large and scenic forest of Fontainebleau, a favourite weekend getaway for Parisians, as well as for the historic Château de Fontainebleau, which once belonged to the kings of France. It is also the home of INSEAD, one of the world's most elite business schools. Inhabitants of Fontainebleau are sometimes called Bellifontains.

The Chinese Museum or musée chinois is a section of the Palace of Fontainebleau that keeps artifacts from Qing dynasty China, the Kingdom of Siam, and other Asian countries, including diplomatic gifts and plunder from the Second Opium War. Opened in 1863 by Empress Eugénie, it is one of the world's oldest museums specifically dedicated to Asian art.

Barbizon (French pronunciation: [baʁbizɔ̃] ) is a commune (town) in the Seine-et-Marne department in north-central France. It is located near the Fontainebleau Forest.
