Fremantle () (Nyungar: Walyalup) is a port city in Western Australia, located at the mouth of the Swan River in the metropolitan area of Perth, the state capital. Fremantle Harbour serves as the port of Perth. The Western Australian vernacular diminutive for Fremantle is Freo.Prior to British settlement, the indigenous Noongar people inhabited the area for millennia, and knew it by the name of Walyalup ("place of the woylie"). Visited by Dutch explorers in the 1600s, Fremantle was the first area settled by the Swan River colonists in 1829,: 11  and is named after Captain Charles Fremantle, an English naval officer who claimed the west coast of New Holland as British territory. The settlement struggled in its first decades, and in 1850, with the advent of penal transportation to the colony, Fremantle became Australia's primary destination for convicts. The convict-built Fremantle Prison operated long after transportation ended in 1868, and is now a World Heritage Site. Fremantle was charted as a municipality in 1883, and the following decade its harbour was deepened for commercial shipping, transforming the port into a bustling trade centre and gateway at the height of the Western Australian gold rushes. Declared a city in 1929, Fremantle played a key role in World War II as the largest submarine base in the Southern Hemisphere. Post-war immigration from Europe, particularly Italy, helped shape Fremantle's character, and it rapidly gentrified after hosting the 1987 America's Cup. Today, Fremantle is recognised for its well-preserved Victorian and Edwardian streetscapes and convict-era architecture, and is known as a bohemian enclave with a thriving arts and culinary scene. It is also the traditional home of the Fremantle Football Club, one of two Australian Football League teams based in Western Australia.

The Federal Hotel is located at 23-25 William Street in Fremantle, Western Australia, opposite the Fremantle Town Hall. The three-storey hotel was designed by George Charles Inskip (1840-1931) and built by Jordine and Ruthven for James Herbert Junior (1841-1893). Herbert was the proprietor of the Rockingham Arms and the Freemasons Hotel. Inskip was a Melbourne based architect, who came to Western Australia in 1879 to superintend work on Edmund Blacket’s design for St George's Cathedral, Perth. Inskip subsequently was commissioned to design a new Union Bank in Albany in 1884. Inskip also designed the Union Bank buildings in Perth, Fremantle, Roebourne and Geraldton. At the time it was built, the Federal was described in the press as being “far in advance of anything so far erected in Western Australia and equal to the best in the sister colonies”. In August 1888 Herbert filed for bankruptcy and the receivers subsequently arranged for the property to be transferred to Alexander Forrest and Sir John Forrest. In 1904, local architect, Joseph Herbert Eales (1864-1957) was responsible for extensive additions to the Federal Hotel, including the front verandahs and the western wing, which extends towards the rear of the premises. On 8 February 1927 the hotel was the scene of a double murder, when Lillian Josephine Martin and her four-year-old son Daniel Charles were found dead in an upstairs bedroom of the building. Martin, her son and Jack Thomas had booked into the hotel under the name of Mr and Mrs Martin on 7 February. Thomas left the hotel at 7:30 am the following day and the bodies of Martin and her son were discovered at 11:00 am by a house maid. Martin had been strangled and her son's throat had been cut. An extensive search was then undertaken by the police for Thomas, whose body was later found near the Mends Street Jetty in South Perth on 13 February. The coroner subsequently concluded that Thomas had committed both murders and then committed suicide by shooting himself with a revolver.In 1989 the hotel was renamed to Rosie O'Grady's, an Irish themed pub. In 1995 the building underwent internal alterations, reconstruction of the two-storey front verandah and repainting of the front façade, with the works being carried out by Maxwell Cox Architects. Further internal changes were made in 2001. In January 2016 Rosie O'Grady's closed for business and the hotel was re-opened as the Federal Hotel.

Walyalup Koort, formerly known as Kings Square (or King's Square), is a town square in Fremantle, Western Australia. It is bounded by Queen, Newman, William, and Adelaide Streets. Though the square was originally a public reserve, it has been the site of Saint John's Church of England since 1843, and the Fremantle Town Hall since 1887. High Street was extended through and beyond the square in the 1880s, but the portion through the square was closed off in the 1960s. Today Kings Square functions as a civic and cultural centre of Fremantle, with modern events taking place adjacent to the historic buildings.

St John's Anglican Church also known as St John the Evangelist Church, is the historic Anglican parish church of Fremantle, Western Australia. The first Georgian-style church close to the present site was opened in 1843, and then replaced with a larger Gothic building nearby in 1882. The older building was demolished, which allowed Fremantle Town Hall to be built and for the High Street to be extended, giving the Kings Square its current shape. The church is part of the Anglican Diocese of Perth, and currently forms a parish jointly with St. Peter's in Palmyra.

Higham's Buildings is a heritage listed building located at 101 High Street, on the corner of Market Street in the Fremantle West End Heritage area. It is one of many commercial buildings constructed in Fremantle during the gold boom period in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The two storey building was constructed in 1890 in the Federation Free Classical style. The rendered building co-joins retail shops that return along Market Street with a minimal setback from the pavement. A highly decorative stucco pediment in the parapet that faces High Street features the name of the building. The facade has ashlar effect pilasters dividing the building into bays.In the 1850s and 1860s there was a store and residence in the site owned by Mary Higham. These buildings were replaced in the 1890s by the "new" Higham buildings and added to in the 1900s. The building remained in the Higham family until 1974.The building was originally constructed for Edward Higham who was a founding member of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce and later a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council for the Fremantle district.A fire broke out in the building in 1902; it was quickly extinguished. Tearooms were established in the building in 1904. A pharmacy opened in the building in 1912.The Palladium Theatre used to be in the eastern end of the building complex.The building was classified by the National Trust in 1974 and placed permanently on the Register of the National Estate in 1978.

Metropolis Fremantle, formerly known as King's Theatre, is a performance venue and nightclub located at 58 South Terrace, Fremantle, adjacent to the Sail and Anchor Hotel.

The National Hotel is on the corner of High and Market Streets Fremantle. Originally built as a shop in 1868, it was occupied by the National Bank in the early 1880s. When the bank relocated in 1886, the building became the National Hotel.

The Sail and Anchor Hotel is located on the corner of South Terrace and Henderson Street in Fremantle, Western Australia, opposite the Fremantle Markets. The Freemasons' Hotel, was constructed in 1901–1903. It replaced the hotel that was originally constructed on the site in 1854 for Nicholas Paterson and Anthony Cornish. In 1901, James Gallop purchased the Freemasons' Hotel property and commissioned architect Frederick William Burwell to design a new hotel for the site. Burwell also designed the Central Chambers, Victoria Pavilion, Fowler's Warehouse, Owston's Buildings and Marmion House. The construction was undertaken by William Reynolds and was carried out in stages so that the hotel could continue to trade. In the 1920s, a first floor wing was added to the western side of the hotel. In 1955, the veranda and balcony was removed and replaced with a suspended awning. In 1923 the Swan Brewery purchased the hotel from William Padbury, retaining ownership of it until 1977. In April 1984, the Freemasons' Hotel was sold to Brewtech Ltd who undertook a major restoration and upgrading of the hotel, converting it into Australia's first boutique pub brewery, and renaming it the Sail and Anchor in 1986. The renovations included the restoration of the veranda and balcony. In 1990 Elders IXL purchased the Matilda Bay Brewing Company (formerly Brewtech Ltd), in a deal that valued Matilda Bay at more than A$50 million, selling the hotel to the Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group (ALH), a subsidiary of Woolworths Limited, who subsequently closed the micro-brewery operations at the hotel for a short time after 2010, however the micro-brewing has since resumed.

The Princess Theatre, located at 29–33 Market Street, Fremantle, Australia, was built in 1912. It closed in 1969 and is now used for offices and retail businesses.

The former Union Bank of Australia Building, also known as the ANZ Bank Building, is a heritage listed building located at 86 High Street in the Fremantle West End Heritage area. It was one of many commercial buildings constructed in Fremantle during the interwar period. The two storey building was constructed in 1930The site was formerly known as 84 High Street and was the address of four shops that occupied the site prior to 1930. The building was designed by Hobbs, Smith and Forbes and built for the Union Bank of Australia by the builder R. V. Ritchie.Constructed in the Inter-War Free Classical style the building was made from rendered brick with an ashlar effect and has a breakfront where the centre of the building is recessed.The building has a basement along with the two storeys above and occupies 48 feet (15 m) of street frontage. the side stairway entrance leads to large offices on the second floor. The cost of the building was estimated at £17,000.The bank put its old premises at the corner of Cliff Street and High Street up for sale in July 1930.In 1951 the Bank of Australasia merged with the Union Bank of Australia to form the Australia and New Zealand Bank Limited The name of the bank remained on the site until between 1952 and 1956 when it was renamed as the Australia and New Zealand Bank. The property was renovated in 1960 and 1969. The bank continued to use part of the building until 1990 when it relocated and put the site up for auction. It was eventually sold in mid-1991 and opened as a market later the same year selling glassware, ceramics and toys. The markets closed down about a year later.

The Fremantle Technical School building, also known as the Fremantle Technical College building, is a two-storey building of red brick construction located at the corner of South Terrace and Essex Street in Fremantle.The building adjoins the single storey former Infants and Girls School, which was built from 1877 to 1878; a small forecourt is formed by the recessed central bay former Infants and Girls School and the technical school building, which terminates the north end of the site.The public school was later transformed into a technical school, in 1902.Hillson Beasley, the chief architect of the Public Works Department of Western Australia, approved the plans for the Fremantle Technical School on 20 July 1912.Planned as the western wing of the old school, the building was estimated to cost £5,000. It has 270 feet (82 m) of frontage along South Terrace and was made from brick with a local limestone base. It features a Donnybrook plinth and facings, and a roof of Marseilles tiling. Designed to have ten new classrooms each to hold 30 students it provided access to the first floor via a wide stairway opening onto a large landing. Each floor had five classroom with the rooms on the ground floor surrounding a large open hall space.The foundation stone was laid by the then Minister for Education, Thomas Walker, on 31 October 1912.The brick and tile building was built in the Federation Free Style with banded stucco and stone.The official opening of the building was held on 16 July 1913, although classes had been held in some classrooms prior to the event. It was opened by Thomas Walker together with the Mayor of Fremantle, Frederick James McLaren, in attendance.

The R.S.L. Club also known as the Wyola Club or the Fremantle RSL Wyola Club Inc., is a heritage listed building located at 81-83 High Street. It was one of many commercial buildings constructed in Fremantle during the gold boom period in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The building was constructed in 1903 by architect T. Anthoness. It was and built as a storefront and workshop for tailors, J.A. Hicks & Company. It was extended to designs by architects Allen & Nicholas in 1946 for the Wyola Club with further changes and restorations have been made to the building in 1955 also using the architects Allen & Nicholas.In 2009 the building was sold to Phil Douglas, who was the manager of the Wyola Club, and his wife Linda Lyons for A$482,559. The pair were later taken to court by the club concerning the sale of a property belonging to the incorporated association. The Commissioner for Consumer Protection has secured an additional A$500,000 payout for members.The building was advertised for sale in 2012 with an estimated price of A$2-3 million. The total floor space of the building in 708 square metres (7,621 sq ft) with property having an area of 869 square metres (9,354 sq ft).
