Wendy, Cambridgeshire

Shingay cum Wendy is a civil parish in the English county of Cambridgeshire, around 5 miles (8 km) north west of Royston. Forming part of the district of South Cambridgeshire's Bassingbourn Ward the parish's main settlements are Shingay and Wendy. As Shingay cum Wendy has a low number of electors the affairs of the parish are run by the parish meeting system.

Shingay Preceptory was a Knights Hospitaller priory at Shingay in Cambridgeshire, England. It was established in 1144. The moated site is a scheduled ancient monument.

Croydon is a small village and civil parish in South Cambridgeshire, England. It is 10 miles (16 km) south-west of Cambridge and immediately west of the A1198 road (the Roman Ermine Street). The population in 2001 was 221 people, increasing to 235 at the 2011 Census. The site of the deserted medieval village of Clopton is in Croydon parish, which was formerly known as Croydon-cum-Clopton.

Royal Air Force Bassingbourn or more simply RAF Bassingbourn is a former Royal Air Force station located in Cambridgeshire approximately 3 mi (5 km) north of Royston, Hertfordshire and 11 mi (18 km) south west of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. During the Second World War it served first as an RAF station and then as a bomber airfield of the Eighth Air Force, of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). It remains the home of the Tower Museum Bassingbourn.

Clopton is a deserted medieval village (DMV), about 1 mile (1.6 km) south west of the village of Croydon, Cambridgeshire, that once stood on a prominent ridge from which it gained its name. Its history reaches back to the Roman occupation, and an Anglo-Saxon village, covering approximately 30 acres (12 ha) was established by the 10th century. The village is referenced in the Domesday Book, when 18 peasants were noted as inhabiting it. A Friday market was granted in 1292 to Robert Hoo, Lord of Clopton. The place-name 'Clopton' is first attested circa 1080 in the Inquisitio Comitatus Cantabrigiensis, where it appears as Cloptona. It appears as Cloptune in the Domesday Book of 1086. The name means 'town or settlement on a hill'.It is believed that the village was deserted in the early 16th Century between 1500 and 1518 after John Fisher, a London lawyer, had purchased the land from the Clopton family in 1489. He then evicted the villagers to create enclosures. Archaeologists have located the site for the parish church of Saint Mary, two moated sites, and a probable mill. The church is recorded in poor repair by 1561, which is when it appears that Clopton became amalgamated with neighbouring Croydon to its east. The church was subsequently demolished and turned over to agriculture by 1660.The site is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument and consists of earthworks.

Wimpole Estate is a large estate containing Wimpole Hall, a country house located within the civil parish of Wimpole, Cambridgeshire, England, about 8+1⁄2 miles (13.7 kilometres) southwest of Cambridge. The house, begun in 1640, and its 3,000 acres (12 km2) of parkland and farmland are owned by the National Trust. The estate is regularly open to the public and received over 335,000 visitors in 2019. Wimpole is the largest house in Cambridgeshire.

Bassingbourn cum Kneesworth is a civil parish in the South Cambridgeshire district of Cambridgeshire, England, 14 miles south-west of Cambridge and just north of Royston, Hertfordshire. Since the 1960s the parish contains the villages of Bassingbourn and Kneesworth. The parish is astride the Roman Ermine Street (now the A1198 and formerly the A14), and the two ancient tracks, Icknield Way and Ashwell Street. The Prime Meridian passes just to the east of the parish.

Wimpole is a small village and civil parish in South Cambridgeshire, England, about 8+1⁄2 miles (13.7 km) southwest of Cambridge. Until 1999, the main settlement on the A603 was officially known and signed as New Wimpole and Orwell, Cambridge Road. On 1 April 1999, following a parish boundary change and a referendum of local residents, the village name was simplified to Wimpole. It is the site of the country house of Wimpole Hall and its accompanying Wimpole's Folly.

Bassingbourn Village College is an academy school in Bassingbourn, just across the Cambridgeshire border from Royston, Hertfordshire. It currently has around 674 registered full-time students. The college teaches students from Year 7 to Year 11. The college forms part of the Anglian Learning academy trust. Bassingbourn Village College was rated "good" by Ofsted in 2023 and the majority (90%) of school leavers continue in education.The college is divided into four houses: Luther King, Keller, Moore and Shakespeare.
