Buenos Aires ( or ; Spanish pronunciation: [ˈbwenos ˈajɾes] (listen)), officially the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (Spanish: Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires), is the capital and largest city of Argentina. The city is located on the western shore of the Río de la Plata, on South America's southeastern coast. "Buenos Aires" can be translated as "fair winds" or "good airs", but the former was the meaning intended by the founders in the 16th century, by the use of the original name "Real de Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre", named after the Madonna of Bonaria in Sardinia, Italy. The city of Buenos Aires is neither part of Buenos Aires Province nor the Province's capital; rather, it is an autonomous district. In 1880, after decades of political infighting, Buenos Aires was federalized and removed from Buenos Aires Province. The city limits were enlarged to include the towns of Belgrano and Flores; both are now neighborhoods of the city. The 1994 constitutional amendment granted the city autonomy, hence its formal name of Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. Its citizens first elected a Chief of Government in 1996; previously, the Mayor was directly appointed by the President of Argentina. The Greater Buenos Aires conurbation, which also includes several Buenos Aires Province districts, constitutes the fourth-most populous metropolitan area in the Americas, with a population of around 15.6 million. It is also the second largest city south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Buenos Aires' quality of life was ranked 91st in the world in 2018, being one of the best in Latin America. In 2012, it was the most visited city in South America, and the second-most visited city of Latin America.It is known for its preserved eclectic European architecture and rich cultural life. It is a multicultural city that is home to multiple ethnic and religious groups, contributing to its culture as well as to the dialect spoken in the city and in some other parts of the country. This is because since the 19th century, the city, and the country in general, has been a major recipient of millions of immigrants from all over the world, making it a melting pot where several ethnic groups live together. Thus, Buenos Aires is considered one of the most diverse cities of the Americas. Buenos Aires held the 1st FIBA World Championship in 1950 and 11th FIBA World Championship in 1990, the 1st Pan American Games in 1951, was the site of two venues in the 1978 FIFA World Cup and one in the 1982 FIVB Men's World Championship. Most recently, Buenos Aires had a venue in the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship and in the 2002 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship, hosted the 125th IOC Session in 2013, the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics and the 2018 G20 summit.

The French blockade of the Río de la Plata was a two-year-long naval blockade imposed by France on the Argentine Confederation ruled by Juan Manuel de Rosas. It closed Buenos Aires to naval commerce. It was imposed in 1838 to support the Peru–Bolivian Confederation in the War of the Confederation, but continued after the end of the war. France did not land ground forces, but instead took advantage of the Uruguayan Civil War and the Argentine Civil Wars, supporting Fructuoso Rivera and Juan Lavalle against Manuel Oribe and Rosas. After two years without the expected results, France signed the Mackau-Arana treaty with the Argentine Confederation, ending the hostilities.

The Obelisco de Buenos Aires (Obelisk of Buenos Aires) is a national historic monument and icon of Buenos Aires. Located in the Plaza de la República in the intersection of avenues Corrientes and 9 de Julio, it was erected in 1936 to commemorate the quadricentennial of the first foundation of the city.

Plaza de la República (Republic Square) is a city square in Buenos Aires, capital of Argentina. It is located in the San Nicolás quarter, at the intersection of the city's three main arteries: Ninth of July Avenue, Corrientes Avenue, and Diagonal Norte. It derives its name and associations from a church once sited on the square, San Nicolás de Bari (demolished in the 1930s for the creation of 9 July Avenue), where the country's national flag was hoisted for the first time. The plaza is the site of the Obelisk of Buenos Aires, designed by Alberto Prebisch and inaugurated in 1937. The plaza, originally a circular esplanade paved in stone, was enlarged to its current dimensions in 1962. Its present layout was established in 1971, when Corrientes Avenue was rerouted through the plaza and around the obelisk to ease car traffic into the city's financial district.

Carlos Pellegrini is a station on Line B of the Buenos Aires Underground. From here, passengers may transfer to the Diagonal Norte Station on Line C and the 9 de Julio Station on Line D and Metrobus 9 de Julio. The station was opened on 22 July 1931 as the eastern terminus of the extension of the line from Callao. In December 1931, the line was extended further east to Leandro N. Alem.

The Teatro Broadway is an Art Deco style theatre in Buenos Aires, Argentina which opened on October 11, 1930. Located near the centre of the city at 1155 Corrientes Avenue, it was designed by the architect Jorge Kálnay.

9 de Julio is a station on Line D of the Buenos Aires Underground. From here, passengers may transfer to Carlos Pellegrini station on Line B and Diagonal Norte station on Line C and Metrobus 9 de Julio.The station was opened on 3 June 1937 as part of the inaugural section of Line D, between Catedral and Tribunales.

The Teatro del Pueblo ("People's Theatre") is the first independent theatre of Latin America, founded in 1930 by playwright Leónidas Barletta in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The Instituto Libre de Segunda Enseñanza is a high school that depends on the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). It has approximately 1000 students, and it is located in Libertad 555 street, Capital Federal, Buenos Aires, Argentina. As it is affiliated with the University, it has an admission process that lasts one year and consists of an admission course, which involves multiple exams in Mathematics, History, Language and Geography. Almost all of its faculty teaches in the UBA, and physical education used to be performed at the Universidad de Buenos Aires campus, in Ciudad Universitaria, until 2016. One of its characteristics is that there is no need to do the CBC (a public admission year to enter the university), because it offers its students the possibility of attending an extra 6th year in the career they have chosen. The school has a reputation for being strict and rigorous, not admitting students who have been held back, or have more than one subject that hasn't been passed. The school has also earned several education awards for its academic excellence.

Diagonal Norte is a station on Line C of the Buenos Aires Underground. From here, passengers may transfer to Carlos Pellegrini Station on Line B or 9 de Julio Station on Line D and Metrobus 9 de Julio. It is located near the Obelisco de Buenos Aires. The station was opened on 9 November 1934 as the western terminus of the inaugural section of the line, from Constitución to Diagonal Norte. On 6 February 1936 the line was extended to Retiro.

The Teatro Colón (Spanish: Columbus Theatre) is the main opera house in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is considered one of the ten best opera houses in the world by National Geographic. According to a survey carried out by the acoustics expert Leo Beranek among leading international opera and orchestra directors, the Teatro Colón has the room with the best acoustics for opera and the second best for concerts in the world.The present Colón replaced an original theatre which opened in 1857. Towards the end of the century it became clear that a new theatre was needed and, after a 20-year process, the present theatre opened on 25 May 1908, with Giuseppe Verdi's Aïda. The Teatro Colón was visited by the foremost singers and opera companies of the time, who would sometimes go on to other cities including Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. After this period of huge international success, the theatre's decline became clear and plans were made for massive renovations. After an initial start of works to restore the landmark in 2005, the theatre was closed for refurbishment from October 2006 to May 2010. It re-opened on 24 May 2010, with a programme for the 2010 season.

Del Parque is a former train station in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was the first railway station in the country, serving as terminus of Buenos Aires Western Railway. The station was located at the intersection of Cerrito and Tucumán streets. Del Parque operated for over 27 years until it was closed due to the high pedestrian traffic in the area where the station was located. Long distance services to the cities of Bragado and Lobos departed from the station.
